Gnome vs KDE?

From a user standpoint, can anyone explain the big differences here?

I've only used Gnome, I run Redhat 9.0 on my laptop, its fast so I'm not worried about the speed, I just wonder -- am I missing anything by not using KDE? Or do they keep up with each other and just end up looking different? Heh

Thanks in advance.

All that I've noticed is the look and feel, I haven't really seen much of a usability difference, but I don't use linux all that often so someone with more experience with it may be able to offer more help. I generally just use whichever I feel like using at the time. I can't seem to really choose one over the other permenantly, although I prefer KDE only a little more then Gnome.

I think Gnome's got more choice in the "fun" department, like screensavers, themes, stuff like that. But sadly it's really buggy on my computer, so I have to use KDE. There doesn't seem to be that much difference, honestly.

I perfer KDE myself. I've been using it for most of my linux life. Never could get into Gnome but I did try Ximian Gnome for a short time and liked it. KDE is just more user friendly and it's what I'd like Windows to be more like.

Thanks :D I'll install KDE and try it out when I'm bored ;)

I dislike both but use Gnome as I enjoy the OSX look of the themes I can get for it (KDE was slower and E! was buggy in places)

I used to love waimea but am not so sure about it now - In the end you just have to go for the WM that you enjoy

Use what you like, or use neither. There are lots of choices out there, and not using one doesn't limit you. You can run KDE apps in GNOME or GNOME apps in KDE. You can run them both in Enlightenment, or icewm, or whatever you want. Just play around and see which you like more :)

I personally run a cvs of Enlightenment 0.16.6 and do most of my app launching from terminals. That's the beauty of Linux. You have the choice.

I really don't use KDE or Gnome, I prefer the speed and "cleanness" of fluxbox. But when I do fire up apps, they are GTK apps more than not. Galeon, sylpheed, pan etc..

I use neither gnome or kde.
Windowmaker is simple, looks really nice, feels like {next|open}step, minimal memory usage and fast.

I prefer KDE. It simply "feels" more smooth and responsive to me than Gnome does. Plus I find it to be much more customizable.

KDE (on FreeBSD, not Linux) works great for me. TFP is awesome in Konq. :)

skinnedmink 04-20-2003 07:51 AM

There is one thing I like about KDE that makes me always use it. Fuzzy clock.

phunktastic 04-20-2003 08:03 AM

I've always preferred KDE, especially with all the things on www.kde-look.org. I tried gnome for a little bit and thought it was OK. I used Ximian Gnome and liked it a lot, but it doesn't seem to be in development anymore. Or if it is its just really slow development.

I was never able to find many themes for gnome, where did you gnome fans get yours from?

Orionath 04-20-2003 08:27 AM

KDE has a familiar feel to someone who is switching from MS Windows. I installed that on my fiance's computer and she likes it. I used to like Gnome until Ximian came up with Nautilus, which seems to me to be one of the biggest wastes of RAM resources since MS Windows ME.

Regarding themes: Gnome is a window manager. Themes are made for desktop managers. If you want themes for Gnome, look for themes for Enlightenment, Sawfish, etc.

phunktastic 04-20-2003 09:33 AM

Makes more sense. I guess with KDE it all kind of blends together. So when I searched gnome themes I wouldn't find much. Just did a search for Enlightenment themes and found a ton of them at freshmeat. Thanks :)

I like KDE+karamba (samurize clone for X)

Well, there is always themes.org, and recently gnome added it's own theme and background site. http://art.gnome.org

They have themes for gdm, nautilus, gtk, gtk2, and much much more. :D

I used to be a die-hard GNOME user with 1.4 (still use it at work). I tried GNOME 2.0 at home and that was enough to drive me to KDE... :-/

Yes, 2.0 really sucks that bad.

On the laptop I tend to use blackbox or window maker, depending on what kind of mood I'm in.

Ghost Bladder 04-21-2003 06:34 PM

KDE is easier to use and less crashtastic on my machine.

krazykemist 04-22-2003 02:55 AM

I've got a box setup with Mandrake 9 and I use Gnome.
For some reason that I cant remember I didnt like KDE and never went back after I switched to Gnome.

tux 04-22-2003 06:53 AM

I use window maker because of its expandability. I would recomend KDE because I just plain dont like gnome.

Boner 04-22-2003 07:09 AM

I use the bastardized version of Gnome with a bit of KDE mixed in that RedHat calls Bluecurve :)

phunktastic 04-22-2003 07:20 AM

I just installed karamba for KDE and damn is it nice! If I had a place to host it I'd post a screenshot
