Web page help (possible Java problem?)

Hey folks, another probable simpleton question from my end. I'm running XP, and when I go to these web pages and try to get animated radar loops and/or satellite loops its not working anymore...and it was just a few days ago...

Here are some examples:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/radar/loop/D.../si.kmux.shtml

I just get the little icon in the upper left hand side of frame where the loop should be loading...

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA...l-wv-loop.html

Exact same problem here as well...

I'm guessing this has something to do with Java? I've tried Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level Internet, and I changed the setting to low safety for Java permissions but it still doesn't change the situation. However that is the only solution that I have tried b/c I honestly am not sure where to turn to from here...all suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks ahead of time...

Tim

turn on java logging, see if it says anything, its in ies options

either java or javascript is disabled somehow

TitleFight 12-06-2003 07:57 PM

Just tried that...no such luck unfortunately...thanks tho

Yea I figure it has to do with java as well but I have no idea what the hell is going on!!

charliex 12-06-2003 08:47 PM

what happens when you type
java -version
at the cmd prompt

though i expect thall probably work, im guessing youve checked all the obvious, disk space etc

do any java aps work ?

http://www.finitemonkeys.com/links.htm

do you see a little spinny clock, if you do your javascript is working

TitleFight 12-06-2003 08:57 PM

Bare with me - I would consider myself cpu illiterate btw...

I did see the spinning clock, so I guess per your post javascript is indeed working. I should have ample disk space - proly close to 30Gigs or so.

As far as the typing java -version at the cmd promt I'm not sure I follow the directions, I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff. Please keep your patience with me and I appreciate all of the help so far!

no problem, i dont mind taking the time.

the cmd prompt is basically the dos shell of old days, we old unix/dos style hacks cant get away from it ;)
to open a cmd prompt on an NT style OS ( N4/2k or XP ) do this
go to the start menu, to the "Run" item, select it

a window will appear asking you to type in a command , next to where it says "Open"
type

CMD "enter"

case doesnt matter its just for clarity, "enter" means press the enter or return key.

it should open up a new window typically a black box with white writing and it'll prompt you as "C:>" or C:\Documents and Settings>" or something similar, that doesn't matter for this test

now type at the flash cursor, click on the black window first.

java -version "enter"

it should say something a bit like
Quote:

java version "1.4.2"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-b28)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-b28, mixed mode)
If should be similar to that, if not one of two things wil lhave happened, it'll either say

Quote:

CMD: Unknown command "java"
or some other error that will be an indication of whats going on.

if not and it does say something very similar to what i posted, the numbers are usually different, then we've figured out that java nd javascript are probably not whats wrong. and we go to the next step .

typing
exit "enter"

will close the cmd window or just press the X

Okay, within the black box is says "Java is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." What next?

I can't stress enough to amount of thanks thus far I owe...

I concur. I've got the newest MS java engine from windows update and I get the same response at the command line charliex, perhaps it isn't a valid winNT command?

It's more complex Titlefight, but open up the control panel, switch it to classic view if using XP, and open the adminstrative tools folder.
Open the computer managment console their.
Select system information in the left hand column much like you would if using file explorer to navigate the harddrive and then select the subfolder Internet explorer. click on the summary folder that appears in the right hand column and you'll get a summary of all of IE's settings including Java version.

which service pack do you have sp1 or sp1a
control panel / system

Well, I can make it all the way to the Computer Management icon but can't locate the summary folder for IE, unfortunately. I looked everywhere and couldn't even find any settings what-so-ever...

That said keep in mine I'm the Ralph Wiggum of CPU's...

Okay, here's another link as an example, just in case...

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/browsh3.html

Now I can get to that image just fine, however when I click on the 'view movie of the water vapor sector' is when it causes the problem...

All I see is "Hurricane Water Vapor Loop" at the top and underneath a large blank box with an image (red square in top left, green circle middle right, and blue triangle bottom left) in the extreme upper left hand side of the "unloadable" satellite shot.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks again,

Tim

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/applet/aniscode.jar
what happens when you click that link, if you get and open/save dialog click open, after that what happens

Also go to the cmd prompt as before and type
set CLASSPATH "enter"

then copy and paste the results here, right click the cmd prompt window titlebar, select MARK, drag over the text, and press enter, or select copy from the title bar then ctrl+v or paste it here

unless it says nothing

Charlie,

Strange. I was coming back to the cpu late yesterday when I noticed it was undergoing an update process. It was a relatively small window that said it was searching and uploading automatic updates for my system. After about 30 mins I went about my business and all of the previously mentioned problems are working just fine now. I guess its like those animals that when they get their tail chopped off they grow another one, regeneration. I guess my cpu was fixing itself somehow. But at any rate I still plan on searching around trying to figure out more about this thing. Thanks for taking the time to help throughout!!

Tim

i'm just glad it worked for you :) thansk for letting me know its fixed too.
