delete program (mac)

hello all,

i was downloading protools to my g4 osX mac last night, and the download (which was supposed to take a 1/2 hour) got interrupted halfway through.

i wanted to make sure everything that had been downloaded to that point got erased, because the program's huge. so i dragged the two icons it had put on the desktop into the trashcan, but one of them keeps popping back up.

how do i a) get rid of the pesky protools icon, and
b) make sure nothing else is on my computer
(protools related) before i try again?

thanks.........

If you can't use Finder to delete files, you can do so from the Terminal window.

You may also need to use the sudo command in combination with the rm command. Example:

sudo rm file.ext

Be careful with sudo as it's the equivalent of running a command as root. I think there's a similar post about this already on TFP if you search for it. Try "sudo" as the search term.

Good luck.

I bet osx won't trash it because Protools "belongs" to the system. I had a similar thing happen with fink (if I remember correctly). Just control-click on the file, click on "get info" and change the owner from "system" to "me". Then you have permission to trash it.
There may be a better way, but I would use the finder to look for files that "contain protools". That's what I've done with problematic installs, but I'm a newbie too. Good luck.

what do you mean "keeps popping back up"? When you empty your trash does it say "cannot delete file"? or is it just re-appearing? what in the world is pro-tools, while we're on the subject?

I'm guessing Protools is the OS X developers toolkit.

Something else to try is to use the Disk Utility to "Repair Permissions". I've found that to be a good idea every few months anyway.

Protools is not XCode or Project Builder (old name before 10.3)
