Best method of adding more USB ports?
I'm out of usb ports on my computer. What is the most reliable method of adding more? USB pci card or external device? Also could you please recommend a good brand. Thanks!

USB PCI card. Probably doesn't matter much what brand. Google for it.

or u could just buy a hub.
i have a belkin hub (for my old pc) and it has worked pretty fine. i think that if u dont wanna open up the case, go with a usb hub. |
Yup, Belkin USB hubs. Leo and Patrick swear by them.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I got a USB hub just 2 days ago. Heh.
Yeah, a USB hub will do the job just fine for most things. If you need more bandwidth for something (video camera? depends on the USB spec used I guess) a PCI card is still good though. |
it depends, mainly on what you want to use, I remeber there being some tests, that showe that the most a single port can support is around 5-6 devices. (it's supposed to be hiogher, but realisticly.
as well, if you want to use several things that will max out the usb bandwidth, buy a seperate pci card. |
I bought a generic hub at Fry's for about $20. I have an USB ethernet card, media card reader and scanner hooked up to it and I've never had any problems in the little over a year that I've had it.

One USB port can handle 127 devices.
Get a hub. |
Actually, I just now (20 minutes ago) installed a VIA 6220 PCI USB2.0 card. It was a bit of a hassle because the card doesn't quite fit right, and it was at one point conflicting with my soundcard, but it works now.
The reason that I got a PCI card instead of just a hub, is that my two on-board USB ports appear to be dying and I didn't want to plug a hub into what could be a non-working port tomorrow. If you have functional on-boad ports, just get a hub -- it's slightly cheaper, and less hassle. :) |
usb hub is probably the easiest way, but maybe not the fastest. and if u want a usb 2.0 and u only have usb 1 ports, i'd recomend hardware upgrade
