mandrake help
I just installed mandrake and when I reboot it just comes up at for lack of another word command prompt. Does anyone know how to start the grafical interface I installed KDE and Gnome
|
is it a dual boot machine, or are you only running mandrake on it?
What version of mandrake? 9.1? |
xp and mandrake 9.1
|
It's been a little while since I last used Linux, but I think startx is what you're looking for if you're in the Linux command prompt.
|
Thank you im going to try it
|
It didnt work said invalid file is there anyway to just install kde
|
if startx didn't work try typing
append="init 3" and your gui *should* load up. It's been awhile for me, so i'm not positive. Let me know what happens :) |
I think it's 'init 5' for the GUI; 3 for the command prompt - but if startx isn't working then init is unlikely to help.
You can just install KDE from Mandrake; you probably have to go for "advanced package configuration" or similar at install time. |
Yeah, I'd reinstall. I assume this is a fairly fresh installation, so there's no data to lose?
My guess is, you left some stuff unchecked in the installer GUI, and you didn't get X or some other components installed or installed correctly. Hey, and flamingpeach----Damn, girl! A cute woman who's on speaking terms with the init system.... I think I'm in LOVE! :D |

I learned alot of stuff like this because I use to have the same problems myself and no help :p |
Thanks I just reinstalled no problem this time. Im at the Tfp in mandrake I like it.
|
I suggested a reinstall because a complaint about a corrupted file and a failure to startx sounded like more than a configuration issue. And for a Linux beginner.... I just didn't want to give him the vi jitters too early. He'll have time for all that later. ;-)
