Website programs?

Right now im using Dreamweaver 4. Its ok, but it doesnt have too many features.. are there any good programs you people use to create websites?

fracturedmind 04-24-2003 07:32 PM

Dreamweaver has a ton of features, what are you looking for? And notepad is the best, by the way.

Grondar 04-24-2003 08:11 PM

When I make a webpage, I grab my HTML book and open up EditPad Lite..

Not advanced features, but a few nice features that put it ahead of Notepad. You have to code though, it doesn't have "built-in" HTML functions/commands.

I use bluefish....

crazycousinjim 04-25-2003 07:38 AM

Upgrade to Dreamweaver MX if you want more...... More of what I am not sure. I do most of my sites by hand these days, but it is very nice to have a WYSIWYG (wiseewoog) tool around for complex layout.

scooter 04-25-2003 11:35 AM

whats up

I am a graphic designer, and i have used several different programs to make my sites. I have used dreamweaver, pagemill which sucks, frontpage which i use a good bit, flash sometimes, and adobe go live alittle. I favor dreamweaver and frontpage the most. And of course most control of a page is with the html.

I use Homesite religiously. Now owned by Macromedia and on version 5, it's the best hardcode html editor out there.

Zello 04-25-2003 12:25 PM

Is Dreamweaver MX all that different from 4.0?

I haven't noticed a difference other than some layout but I don't really use Dreamweaver all that much.

I think if your looking for more features you may want to look into learning some code.

Dreamweaver MX is much much better than 4.0. For starters, the workspace has been much improved. No more figuring out how to arrange floating windows and palettes, now everything is in one streamlined window with a tabbed palette interface.

Also Dreamweaver MX makes it a lot easier to build database driven web applications in a variety of languages, using a wysiwyg interface. It's well worth the upgrade fee, IMHO.

i love frontpage

Phat Bank 04-25-2003 01:33 PM

Dreamweaver MX + BBEdit. FrontPage sux.

b1m2x3 04-25-2003 02:38 PM

flashMX.... its all about the flash these days. :D

XXXs 04-25-2003 05:23 PM

Don't get Frontpage. Pages have a tendency to not display correctly on Gecko/Mozilla browsers. Microsoft has some quality programs, but not this one.

I use Notepad. WYSIWYG programs suck.

Don't worry, you'll grow out of it soon.

I used to love FrontPage, till I found Dreamweaver.

Anon 04-25-2003 05:49 PM

runningwild 04-25-2003 06:11 PM

Where can i go to d/l dreamweaver MX?

bermuDa 04-25-2003 09:02 PM

notepad and a browser to check your progress. what more could you need?

Reese 04-26-2003 02:54 AM

If you can afford it... Dreamweaver MX is the most feature rich and compatable WYSIWYG editor out there. You can get a demo at www.macromedia.com

Of course, Thats just my opinion. I could be wrong.

methodtim 04-27-2003 04:40 AM

I use notepad. I'd show you my homepage, but... I use notepad.

sloedough 04-27-2003 10:39 AM

Sorry damn laptop touchpads, my thumb hit the pad and submited this. Woops

sloedough 04-27-2003 10:40 AM

I use Dreamweaver MX because YSIWYG editor, but the best part is it has a color coded hardcode editor, which can make coding a lot quicker because it tracks what you are trying to do, and pops the code in a contex menu also it closes your tags, except in PHP

Dreamweaver is the way to go, a great editor

limey 10-09-2007 09:30 AM

HTML-Kit is a great free HTML editor. It highlights the syntax in different colors nicely and has tons on help with CSS and other formatting tools.

drego 10-09-2007 06:43 PM

Well it depends on which system I'm in, for linux you can't hardly go wrong with gedit (ok...someone one up me with a "V.....'cause I'm that l33t")....In windows you can't hardly beat dreamweaver, especially if you get into the uber-functionality...like having FTP built right in the app....yeah that's awesome, AND it'll save you time in the long run.

The only thing I really wish I had was a good Javascript "pre-compiler" or something to help with the javascript debug. I love the language, but god damn could you get any more obscure in errors?

Firefox has a pretty good "Javascript debug console" or whatever the actual name of it is.....but god forbid you try and debug javascript using IE......

~Drego.

I use HTML-Kit and Dreamweaver MX for any of my web work.

Herk 10-16-2007 12:56 PM

Wow, nobody mentioned Notepad++. Consider it mentioned. I do all my html/php in this, and have since I first heard of it. Notepad++ is free, has great syntax highlighting, and allows the code structure to be minimized. Like everything inside head tags or in a foreach loop can be closed to one line, so you are only seeing what you are editing.

I have Dreamweaver MX and used it for a little while, but to me it is way too much. Too much power. I prefer just hand coding with good highlighting so you can see when you screw up and navigate the code easily. Using Notepad++ also removes formatting problems like adding extra line breaks.

Notepad++

Most of my HTML is written by PHP or ruby these days...

For the mac, there's no editor like TextMate. It's the Ruby on Rails editor of choice, and a darn fine one for most any purpose.
