Networking Problem

Some weird problems have been coming up within my home network and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

First off, im using windows xp pro, with the internet sharing basically i bridged the incoming internet (from cable modem) to the network card from my sisters computer (win2k pro).

It basically stopped working today, the connections are still fine, i can ping no problem, also still view her on network neighbourhood.

Maybe this has another relation to the problem within the last week or so theres been a new icon in Network Connections, its called 'Sympatico Access Manager on STEVEN-M04KCKUP'. The other icons are Incoming internet Connection, and local area network connection 1.

I dont know where that came from, i cant disable or delete it. I go into properties and it allows me to add and remove certain services. Starts off with like internet mail access protcol, msmsgs, and about a hundred other services.

Could this be a hacker?

And another thing which may be affected. Within the last few days theres been this window popping up about every hour which reads something along the lines of Remote Procedure Call failure. Computer will now restart in 45 secs. And it does that about every 45mins.

So what do you guys think? Any suggestions?

You have the MSBlast worm my friend. Get rid of it (either read about it here or run windows update if you can).

Once that is taken care of, see if the issue is still there. If so, post

Also, if you have a spare 486 or low end pentium, you could use it as a linux router. IMO, Windows ICS makes your connection rather slow.

//edit: Also, forgot to mention, that if you choose to go the linux router route, you will be protected a bit better as it serves as a firewall. And you would need a hub/switch.

less work than setting up your own linux router and buying a hub is to go to a compusa or best buy and pick up a 40 dollar router that does DHCP and NAT ( you can pick up a firewall enabled one as well but not necessary) they are easy to set up and usually have at least 4 ports on the back so you can hook up 4 computers to the same IP address. The best thing about this is that each computer has an internal IP address but is unreachable from the outside. You can still forward some ports to different computers (80 for a personal web server perhaps) but all others do not respond to connection requests. The only way to be safe is to close off everything you don't need to have open.
