Anyone has some experience on the new Firebird - good or bad?

mmm im usin it... im really digging it... i like it better the IE, Opera, and the regular Mozilla... its just so small and nice... its good...

I wouldnt go near a windows machine i had to use for a longer period of time without it

it works fine despite it being a beta. download it.

I'm on 0.6.1.
I enjoy the small package. I've experienced some small annoyances, I haven't stopped to iron out yet, with displaying the occational images in posts.

And there are AWESOME plug-ins for it. The Web Developer plug-in allows you to see hidden form elements and HTML components... Really cool.

It's lack of any formal installation method confuses me deeply.

So how is this different from Opera?

I use Opera, and even paid for my copy, as I like to support small time developers whose products I appreciate.

wow how sad am I, I use mozilla and have never heard of this, checking it out how.

i downloaded firebird a few days ago. it kicks ass! it's got a lot of the things i liked about IE6, but that integrated pop-up blocker takes the cake. the only problem i've got is that now i've got to reinstall all the plugins (flash player, etc.)... and the skinning rules too.

I tried it for a while but went back to Opera :S

For me, it can't be beat. No pop-ups, hella fast, and tabbed browsing. I couldn't go back to IE if I wanted to.

So, I ask again.

How is this different from Opera V7?

The webpage doesn't even have any screen shots.

Opera already has pop-up killers (though I use the FAR superior Proxomitron) and tabbed browsing.

I have been using Firebird since it was Pheonix. It's been my primary browser for quite some time. There are odd occasions where it renders slightly differently than IE and even fewer occasions where it was wildly offbase (more than likely a coding error, if I recall correctly). It works with my banks website. It's all good.

Firebird rules in linux too. Very nice.

Downloaded firebird earlier today, so far so good. I can see where tabbed browsing is going to be very addictive.

I've been using Firebird/Phoenix since .3. Tabbed browsing, pop-up blocker, fast. It's great, but they need to put the MIME type editor back in the preferences box.

Love Firebird, although I haven't heard if they have fixed the Shockwave plug in yet. Still, faster than IE, with way less rexes!!

I cant answer that because Ive never really used Opera. My suggestion is just download it and see how ya like it.

Ive been using it off and on for awhile and now have adopted it as my main browser.. still a few kinks I need to work out, but I'm a lot happier with it than any other browser (Im assuming it's faster and smaller than most others)

The best way to find out if Mozilla is better than Opera for you is to find out yourself.

I'll mention some things I like about Mozilla though.

<li> open source: what does this mean? Well, first off, it means that there are no ads in the free version. In fact, there is no non-free version. Also, it means that there is an infinite number of possible programmers. So, if someone wants something or something is needed, anyone can program it. That doesn't guarantee that it will be included because the core developers choose what gets put in, but it does help things happen a lot faster.

<li> www.mozdev.org : a necessary visit for any Mozilla user in my opinion. Know that the things here are not guaranteed to work - there's a reason they're not in the "stable" version of Mozilla. That reason could be because they're incomplete or buggy, but it can also be simply that they don't see the need to make that extra feature part of what everyone has to take time downloading to use Mozilla. This is the place you can go to get an add-on for Mozilla to have mouse gestures like in Opera among other things. You can also find themes here. Not to mention lots of other useful (useless?) goodies. A similar place which should be visited is www.xulplanet.com to get the PrefBar which I am particularly fond of.

<li> I repeat, no advertisements: That's right. None. NO advertisement banner like in opera, no AOL links like in Netscape, none. And freely.

<li> Pop-up blocking: This is in Opera as well. Nonetheless, it's a great feature. You can also tell it to allow pop-ups for specific sites, so I've told it to allow pop-ups for TFP this way when I get a PM I can have the pop-up window to read it.

I'm sure I missed a few too - perhaps meanspleen will have something to add since I know he is also an avid Mozilla user.

I used to like Firebird until it bugged out. Notice how they have 'bugzilla'? Well, I didn't pay that any attention and figured the software was just fine and dandy. I went along my merry way until I got a first hand taste of bird shit from Mozillas Firebird.

-some pages on another forum I’m in don’t load all the way
-it’s gui is really ugly and un-smooth
-you have to download all the ‘addons’ just to make it not completely suck

IMO, IE is much more smoother and reliable, yet I don't exactly use that either; I have an addiction to tabbed browsing. I like my computer and internet experience –sorry to sound so dramatic- to be neat and clean.

FYI: I've used Opera, Avant browser, Netscape, Firebird, etc; I was a web browser whore -and may still be- for the longest time. I'm always on the lookout for something 'better'.

Recently I've found that since IE is the most stable and compatible browser of all the ones that I've tried, it only makes sense to use browsers that are integrated into IE (or whatever).

Avant Browser (works atop IE) has been my browser of choice for awhile now, and at the moment I'm testing out SlimBrowser (also works atop IE) which is somewhat similar to Avant Browser.

Opera is awesome, but I’m too cheap to pay 20 bucks –w/out student discount it’d be 40 bux- and I’d rather not have a gigantor banner add on my free browser.

ALSO, if you're on dsl or cable modem, I don't see any reason to worry about browser speed. Everything is fast on those connections. Most of the time -this month at least- I'm on 56gay, so browser speed does mean something to me. BUT, compatibility means so much more, cuz i don't like having to switch browser just to view something special like if a webpage is only properly viewed when using IE and isn't compatible with opera and mozilla -i HATE that shit.

I've been a Mozilla user, and when i heard about Firebird i jumped at the chance to try it.

I used it once, but the one thing that turned me off the most is when you right click the tabs for each window, the close tab option is at the bottom, as opposed to the top in Mozilla.

So i ran away.

I love the lack of installation of it though. A little freaky at first, but very satisfying when you realize that it actually works.

I'll go back to it, but not just yet. I promise ;)

There are some great addons you can download to make it even better - I have mouse gestures a al Opera working on my Firebird installation, and some improved tabbed browsing as well.

I only wish it had an install program for the rank and file idiot PC user, but other than that, I think it's the best thing out there.

I've been using Firebird for a month now. I like the tabbed browsing, built in pop up blocking, and the ability to manage individual cookies. It's supported by my bank, but my ISP only supports IE for secure pages, so I have to use that for account maintenance:(

Unzip to wherever you want; it is installed. Run the EXE file. There is no Step 3.

Firebird is on my laptop, main computer, and work computer.

I love the no-install thing.

I love to use Thundbird too, EXCEPT I would kill for it to have better mail export functions.
