What Did You Name Your Computer?

Everyone owns one, well I would think so with this being an web site. I know people name cars, boats, and even guns ("What I got? She has a name. So does this! (caresses the gun lovingly) I call it Vera."). I've named all of my computers and recently I have made a purchase of a TB Hard Drive. I decided that calling each hard drive Data I - IV was not that creative. While coming up with new names for them I thought, what do other people call their computer equipment. If you don't have a cool name for your PC, now is the time to make one up.

I'll start:

My main PC is called "Spiderweb".

The hard drives are named after Greek Gods.

1 TB = "Zeus"
250 GB = "Ares"
250 GB = "Hades"
250 GB = "Apollo"

When the netbook is purchased, it will be called "Hermes".

Goddess.

snowy 12-21-2009 07:02 PM

All of my HDs are named after members of the Fellowship of the Ring. This one is Gimli (120GB). I have a 30GB Maxtor named Aragorn, a 120GB Seagate Barracuda named Legolas, and a 500GB Barracuda named Gandalf. I had a jump drive named Pippin, but I lost him. My current jump drive is Merry. My camera card is Frodo.

wooÐs 12-21-2009 07:57 PM

No name for mine.

LoganSnake 12-21-2009 08:25 PM

Metalocalypse for the PC because that's what was on the TV when I was installing Windows and I was too lazy to come up with a name.

Hard drives are the default System Disk for C, File Storage for second internal and Big for the external.

Vinrej 12-21-2009 10:41 PM

Maybe Pandora? Well forgive me I just watched Avatar.

Plan9 12-21-2009 10:47 PM

Sputnik II.

This busted-ass E-machines computer made it through OEF VII with me. It was choked with moon dust and slammed around in the back of a Buffalo / humvee countless times. While coming back from midtour leave, some dumbass PFC chucked it, in the hard case, right off the back of a five ton. It should have been trashed from the impact. Yet it survived. The keys started coming off in 2007 and the CD drive shit the bed halfway through the deployment, but that thing kept me sane during my last desert adventure by providing MS Word, thousands of .MP3s, and a some SPC's porn stash.

Sputnik II has been retired to a life of luxury (neglect) atop my tall bookcase. It was replaced by Sputnik III last year.

My PC is called D##01, where ## are my other initials. My Wife is D##02, my daughter's is D##03.

My network is called D##00

Esoteric 12-22-2009 05:19 AM

The Beast

Redlemon 12-22-2009 05:56 AM

This one is Hema, for both the stone and for blood. I like to keep the names under 6 characters.

The_Jazz 12-22-2009 06:52 AM

Isn't this a bit like naming a penis?

Yeah, but I'll never yell, "OH YEAH SUCK MY SPIDERWEB, YEAH! Take ALL of my spiderweb, oh MAN that feels so good on Spiderweb!"

*****

Technically no, because of the need for names in your filesystem/network. If you have more than one computer on your network and want to share files, both can't be named Owner-PC.

Each HD has to have a name and so does the computer. Yeah you could default each name, but then you would run into problems later on down the line.

Cynthetiq 12-22-2009 07:17 AM

everything is a named something Icelandic.

amonkie 12-22-2009 07:24 AM

My old sony PC was Chauncey

My ipod is Sparky (from Natl Lampoons, Sparky wears blue speedos in the movie, I got my blue ipod on xmas day and then saw this movie the same day).

My Mac I haven't named.

ratbastid 12-22-2009 07:30 AM

Mine are named after postmodern writers.

My MacBook Pro is "Barthelme".
My last Linux box was "Pynchon".
My Linux fileserver is "Barth".

The company I worked at a few years ago, everyone got to name their machines themselves. So Pynchon (I bought him from the company when I left there) shared a network with Tundra, Vauxhall, and Trogdor.

Lasereth 12-22-2009 08:57 AM

I've never understood why people do this or get kicks from it. I have no idea what my PC is named.

That's not quite the whole story.

The idea of naming computers goes back to the first networks. Back in the days before DNS, all of the hosts and their locations were stored in a list called a hosts file. This existed as a way for people to access different hosts on the network, by mapping names to IP addresses. Just like people can't remember IP addresses very well, people also have a hard time keeping things like IBM-37C08 straight too, so the hosts were given names that were easy to remember.

It still serves a function in large scale networking operations, but naming your local PC's is just the geek tradition that arose from the old way of doing things.

This box is named Lucy and the one in the other room is Rita. I have a cookie for anyone who can guess the origin.

onodrim 12-22-2009 11:09 AM

My computer is named Aziraphale after a character in Neil Gaiman's Good Omens, and also cause it sounds all cool and apocalyptic. :p I usually end up with something mythology based. I've never named my hard drives, there just hasn't been a need.

Okay, Tony the Wonder Llama.

Vigilante 12-22-2009 11:34 AM

I just name mine after their function.

captobvious 12-22-2009 11:44 AM

I try to avoid naming my computers and their parts, so I don't get too attached.

Mule (pc)
Parasite (laptop)

bagatelle 12-22-2009 01:19 PM

I have never thought of naming my computer. Now I wonder, why not! I'm spending so much time with ... him? ... her? ... it? For some reason "Loser" comes to my mind.

Lovely Rita Meter Maid.

Ask a hard one...

Sorry if it was too easy for you. I didn't name my boxen with the thought that they may become a trivia challenge in mind. If I had, I might've gone with Eleanor instead of Lucy.

That's OK, mate - I like the conceit.

If you have any more, what could you call them?

Eleanor
Sally
Jude
Maggie
Pam
Madonna
Sadie
Julia
Bill
Mr Kite
Penny
Robert
Michelle
Lizzy
Carol

Did I miss any?

Martian 12-22-2009 03:44 PM

Jojo and Loretta, and Desmond and Molly.

I don't know if I'll use male names. Should I run out of female names I'll have to consider it. Given the size of my apartment, though, that doesn't seem terribly likely.

connyosis 12-23-2009 02:00 PM

Abbey (Stationary), Sydney (Older VAIO laptop) and Natalia (Netbook). All named after Danger Girl characters.

Reese 12-26-2009 07:28 PM

My old computer is named Wolverine as it's blue with yellow side panels and it has some claw-like swirls on the window.

Current computer doesn't have a name yet.

Punk.of.Ages 12-27-2009 01:13 AM

You're all way more creative than me. My electronic counterparts all have kind of narcissistic names...

Laptop-crispysMachine

Phone-crispysGadget

iPod-crispyPod

Oh, and the PC Jen and I just bought (Its name is slightly more creative)-loveBox...

I put a heart wallpaper on the desktop too...

Man, I'm queer.

Toaster126 12-27-2009 12:08 PM

For as long as I can remember, I've called whatever my main computer is "compy" and my main laptop "lappy", unless the laptop is my main computer, which would make it compy again.

I imagine the reasons come from the same place as my habit of saying or typing prolly instead of probably. :)

paddyjoe 12-28-2009 06:23 AM

In retrospect, I shoulda named my old pc, 'rotten, lousy piece 'o shit!

I have not named my new Mac yet, although 'sweet, sweet baby' comes to mind......:D

biznatch 12-28-2009 05:09 PM

It's always been my first name + "'s PC."
If I end up getting a few running for different purposes, on a same network, I might consider naming them, but probably something about their function, or location (i.e "Kitchen PC").

Baraka_Guru 12-28-2009 05:13 PM

My Macbook is named Jabberwocky.

My PC remains unnamed.

MexicanOnABike 12-28-2009 05:47 PM

My pc is unnamed.

After I saw this thread, I decided to rename my EXTREMELY boring drives to a fun style.

C: Front Line (main drive)
D: No Man's Land (hp recovery partition)
E: Reinforcements (additional drive)

Jinn 12-29-2009 10:51 AM

jinn-xp and jinn-vista.

Exciting, huh?

Hard drives are "Local Disk" and "Backup"
:paranoid:

I understand Lasereth on this one, and generated names are fine for all of the boxes I use at work. But I've named my machines as above specifically for LAN parties where there is enormous amounts of file sharing going on. Knowing your machine name can be useful. It's also useful for multihomed machines.

Zeraph 12-29-2009 12:24 PM

I usually name my computers after mythological creatures representing knowledge. I think my current one is just my name though.

Runningwater 12-31-2009 07:13 AM

Desktop: Johnny5
Laptop: Allspark
Media Center: MediaCenter

snowy 12-31-2009 08:39 AM

My SO's computers are all named after characters from the Venture Bros. :)
