What's Your Favorite Text Editor?

What do the TFP'ers have to say about text editors?

my preference has always been

Unix: vim
win32: textpad

I've recently given up textpad for gvim on win32 and am very happy with the results.

Elitegibson 04-21-2003 09:55 AM

I use textpad for editing code, but I use just plain ole notepad for writing notes to myself. If I'm forced to use linux, I like pico.

kgb 04-21-2003 09:57 AM

I like vi in Unix but I can never remember any of the commands. In windows I have a tendency to use wordpad/notepad but I am thinking of switching to something that actually works well.

SaltPork 04-21-2003 09:59 AM

UltraEdit is my favorite text editor-unless I'm doing Java stuff then I prefer TextPad only because of the ability to compile and run the code from there.

saberyo 04-21-2003 10:00 AM

try u some gvim goodness

give gvim a shot in windows

gvim

It has the hands on feel like the unix version with the clikity-clikness of windows.

hrdwareguy 04-21-2003 10:08 AM

Even in Windows, I stull use MS Edit

BigJonnyJ 04-21-2003 10:19 AM

Gvim is where it's at! Oh and Vim in *nix

Another vote for UltraEdit right here.

So many useful tools in that application, plus it's cheap.

Boner 04-21-2003 11:43 AM

vim in Unix, VisualSlickEdit in Winders

charliex 04-21-2003 11:58 AM

boxer as a text only editor, devstudio for code
emacs for unix
microemacs for when i forget i like boxer

Cuball 04-21-2003 12:09 PM

UltraEdit when using Windows and Emacs when under linux

Empty_One 04-21-2003 12:11 PM

in linux I use nano. It's light, and it's easy for me to remember the basic commands. It helps that they are listed on the bottom of the screen.

In windows, I use textpad or note pad if I'm just doing something small.

Peetster 04-21-2003 12:12 PM

kedit on my Linux box.

juanvaldes 04-21-2003 12:31 PM

BBEdit or vim depending on my mood.

nine 04-21-2003 12:36 PM

TextPad

Orionath 04-21-2003 01:20 PM

Vim on Linux, vi on Unix, EditPadLite on Wonders.
Just installed gvim on my Win2k box. I'll have to try that -- I've been using vim in Cygwin too.

The_Dude 04-21-2003 01:47 PM

word baby

cheerios 04-21-2003 02:02 PM

word == teh crappy! depends on what I'm doing.
java == vim on X, textpad on XP
C++ == ProjectBuilder on X, MS's IDE on XP
HW == textedit on X, textpad/wordpad on XP

scope 04-21-2003 02:16 PM

I use Notepad for almost everything. Personal notes, reminders, jokes, small reports, statistics, web-URLS, almost anything.
Its small, has a tiny memory footprint, and works well.

Haasax 04-21-2003 02:32 PM

Chalk up another UltraEdit :)

*edit* Gonna give gvim a try, I used to love vi back when I worked with unix but i think i may find it hard to go back now, its been a long time ;0

spanky spangler 04-21-2003 02:37 PM

BBEdit or vim, depends if my mousing hand is playing up.

Fallon 04-21-2003 02:46 PM

On linux, I am using nano/pico
on my windows side, when I had it, i used Professional/Programmer File Editor 32. Nifty little program.

ratbastid 04-21-2003 02:52 PM

Linux: Nedit

Anything that synxax-colors my Perl is all right by me.

rubicon 04-21-2003 02:57 PM

WildZero 04-21-2003 05:02 PM

Windows: Notepad
Mac OS X: BBEdit
Unix: pico

Dave 04-21-2003 07:16 PM

Vim, becuase I need an editor, not an OS (referring to emacs, for those of you who've never heard a comment like that before).

zizdog69 04-21-2003 11:18 PM

TextPad for me. Best thing out there to help beginners with web building!

yotta 04-22-2003 02:13 AM

I use gvim on linux (home) and windows (work)

frenik 04-22-2003 07:05 AM

In linux I use vi when I'm stuck to a console, kwrite when I'm not (haven't used linux for a year or two). In windows it's UltraEdit.

XHydralisk 04-22-2003 10:46 AM

I use a program call WordPerfect for writing essays. It works great, but nobody else has it, so I can never send my files to other people.

GremlinDelirium 04-22-2003 12:05 PM

Notepad baby! all the way!!! but i am going to give this gVim thing a try.... I've tried UEdit, works great but the crack for it sucks so i stopped using it, Also it seemed more powerful than I needed cause i don't really need to do anything with hex... but it does c code and html which is really cool.

Phat Bank 04-22-2003 12:18 PM

BBEdit, all the way. www.barebones.com

WOW, i never knew that anybody was still using wordperfect today. I remember back when the only way to write stuff was using wordperfect 5.1/ 6.0a for DOS.

Back to the thread, I'm with the people who use notepad in windows (there is just something about simple text files that most non-computer people don't understand).

Cuball 04-22-2003 01:43 PM

oh yes WP 5.1 my god, what was it to quite ALT-F7 or something, damn I must have had like over 100 key combinations in my head over the past years ...

if find it strange that so few use emacs ??? it's the most powerfulll editor out there imo, but the learning curve isn't that easy :-(

ps: it even has games in it :-)

i8one2 04-22-2003 04:23 PM

Cetus CWORDPAD 3.0 and its FREEWARE

Krycheck 04-22-2003 05:12 PM

vi for linux if I could just remember the commands. Kwrite if I'm lazy.

blackcow 04-22-2003 05:59 PM

textpad, pico, vi

xanthar 04-22-2003 06:16 PM

definitely emacs

spectre 04-23-2003 06:05 AM

NoteTab Light

Rinndalir 04-23-2003 06:37 AM

What no one's said edlin yet??? :D

WordPerfect, bah...anyone remember WordStar? That program was HARDCORE

a1t3r3g0 04-23-2003 07:13 AM

I don't do much "text editing" but when I type up my school papers I always use Word.

For webediting (which I don't really do much of anymore) I'll use notepad/frontpage/CuteHTML.

Grondar 04-23-2003 09:43 AM

I also prefer EditPad Lite.

It has all I need for basic text editing.

BubblegumTeflon 04-24-2003 07:25 AM

Yay BBedit. Also emacs for messing with Darwin.

I can use ed (*the* unix editor), I had to use it at one point in time to edit /etc/fstab in a case where someone had moved the hard drives around on a freebsd box. I guess that if noone has suggested ed then noone is going to suggest teco :P
Quote:

TECO /tee'koh/ n.,v. obs. 1. [originally an acronym for `[paper] Tape
Editor and COrrector'; later, `Text Editor and COrrector'] n. A text
editor developed at MIT and modified by just about everybody. With all
the dialects included, TECO may have been the most prolific editor in
use before {EMACS}, to which it was directly ancestral. Noted for its
powerful programming-language-like features and its unspeakably hairy
syntax. It is literally the case that every string of characters is a
valid TECO program (though probably not a useful one); one common game
used to be mentally working out what the TECO commands corresponding to
human names did.

Shinryu 04-24-2003 09:13 AM

Notepad is all I use.

Crimson 04-24-2003 10:59 AM

vi or vim - whatever is going depending upon the system

I tend to use (abuse?) vim like vi - though the highlighting is nice when set up right

duckduck 04-24-2003 08:42 PM

Blah, just notepad for me.

I wondered when someone would bring up good 'ole ed. :-) ed gives me nightmares because of the situations I've had to use it in ... much like what you described earlier.

philzilla 04-25-2003 02:49 PM

mac: BBEdit, or pico
pc: synedit, or notepad

XHydralisk 04-25-2003 06:21 PM

I don't know why nobody likes wordperfect. It works great.

SiN 04-26-2003 07:02 AM

UltraEdit :)

sub zero 04-26-2003 02:58 PM

<u>crimson editor</u> for making webpages
<u>metapad</u> for everyday use

Apody 04-26-2003 08:27 PM

Edit Plus

it has bulit in santax highlighting for coding :D

methodtim 04-27-2003 08:02 AM

Notepad in Wintel
PICO or Vi if I have to POSIX

I'm sorry, I don't have the mental wherewithall to actually prefer vi - that shit makes no sense after working in and with Windows 85% of the time.

tek55 04-27-2003 08:20 PM

gvim rocks :) for windows at least, never used linux actually so i dunno there, and primal script is really nice too for scripting etc.

Antagony 04-28-2003 06:04 PM

1.) VIM
b.) EditPad Pro

kenshee 04-29-2003 07:53 AM

Mostly EditPlus but I'm trying out TextPad. Textpad seems to have a better UI.

Albert 04-29-2003 10:31 AM

IMHO Vim and Gvim are hands down the best (most powerful, flexible, slimmest) editors for almost all platforms, win32 included.

I would not go back to anything else on Windows, and I've tried UltraEdit, ED for Windows, PE, and all the variants of notepad. Not to mention the various IDEs I'm forced to use for work.

But I would not advise a casual user to try and learn Vim if they had no previous Vi or unix experience. They wouldn't get value for the effort required to learn the commands etc.

And in case no one else mentions it, Vim is Charityware; if you like it you are encouraged to donate to help needy children in Uganda. Very nice.

piranha6 04-29-2003 04:01 PM

Ultraedit for text is my favorite

taog 04-29-2003 06:13 PM

if i'm doing some php shit, i use AceHTML 5 Pro

just plain olde html, i use notepad

when i want to know something that i don' tknow in html, i use adobe golive

when i want to create css files to add to pages, i use adobe golive

I mostly use AceHTML 5 Pro, since i mostly code php scripts.

oblar 04-29-2003 07:47 PM

Linux : pico (or nano, depending on the box)
Windows: Notepad or MS Edit depending on if im at the prompt or not

Although I am trying to learn vim because it is a handy little thing with the highlighting and such.. Emacs is too much of a bear to use in console, in my opinion.

Ok I take it back, I've just installed gvim6.1 for windows and its a big improvement. When I first used it, it was with a very early version which I didnt feel was very polished. I also think it might have been partially due to my attitude of "why does vim need a gui"

wg2000 05-01-2003 03:25 PM

vim

wg2000 05-01-2003 03:27 PM

Dave: Lol, ed! I use ed a lot in shell scripts that need to make complex modifications to files.

Looking through this thread I guess the results of an emacs-vs-vim flamewar are pretty much a given. Hmmm, poll idea...

w00tn00b 05-08-2003 05:53 PM

I have seen wars begin over such a topic. But anyway, I use jed for Linux and emacs for windows. Its not that I have anything against vi, emacs is just easier for me to use.
