Will adding this RAM help or hurt me?
I just bought a new comp that is a X2 5600 running Vista with 2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz. I have an older computer that has 2 512 sticks of Kingmax 512 DDR-400 IC:32Mbx8 that I could pull out and use. Would putting this in slow down all the RAM overall to the slower clock speed or would it not make a huge difference. Or would the additional 1Gig of RAM make up for any other differences? Thanks for the help!

Seriously - why? 2gb is fine. You're just asking for memory troubles.

I play Everquest2 quite a bit and was curious about trying to 2 box two accounts on one computer and I know it is a memory hog. I was thinking that since I had the extra RAM laying about, it might make a difference. However, it would probably help more to get rid of all the flashy graphical effects that Vista uses.

Haha, well, all of that crap aside, you can't put DDR into a DDR2 slot. So you won't be able to upgrade using that particular RAM, end of story.
Would a memory upgrade help? Probably if you're using Vista. Is it worth buying? Probably not so much. |
It won't work. It won't fit, and it wouldn't work if it would fit.
DDR != DDR2 If it's any consolation, DDR2 memory is cheaper than DDR. |
Ok, appreciate the help!

Don't buy more than 1 GB though. 32-bit OSs won't use more than that.

Vista is supposed to support more than 3 gig, it wasn't really the 32 bit issue but the memory controller that XP used. . . there's a way to force an override but I haven't played with it

Vista 64-bit supports more than 3 GB. Vista 32-bit doesn't. Has nothing to do with XP, it has to do with 32-bit OSs.
