Computer help
LS and I have a serious problem on the puter. Plus a question on adding programs.
Every time we click a link that opens a new browser window the browser and the original browser freeze and become non responsive so that we have to end program on them. It seemed to happen after she decided to delete the router out. It's almost like the SBC or IE are either missing something or the security won't allow links to open new browsers without them freezing up. We tried taking out SBC and putting it back in, but all we did was lose their browser capability. How can we correct this? It didn't happen when I had put Firefox in, but she refuses to have Firefox in the puter. Can someone tell LS (Lady Sage) that Firefox, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Hijack This are good safe programs that help the security of the puter and won't hurt it? I had downloaded them to give us some true protection, but she took them out as soon as possible saying that it took up space and didn't help. |
If I remember correctly, SBC installs their own customized version of IE, which doesn't really add anything to the equation, right? Perhaps you can get the "true" IE back in there. I suspect that SBC f'd something up along the way with your IE configurations. I don't know how to reset all of IE's configurations, whereas with Firefox you can just create a new profile.
PS: Lady Sage: I've used Firefox since it was called Phoenix (version 0.4), and I used to use all the other programs (except HijackThis, never needed it) that Pan mentioned when I used a PC at work (I was the sysadmin, so I put them on all computers). Plus CCleaner. These are all great and solid programs, and your computer will be a happier and safer place to play with them running. |
all are good programs, EXCEPT if you use them wrong. the major case is hijack this, if you remove the wrong thing, you can hose your system.
easy solution is to switch to firefox, then try to fix IE |
Yes, I don't recommend Hijack this unless someone qualified tells you to put it on your machine. I don't put it on automatically for that very reason.

Firefox is good. Space is cheap. And no matter what people think - disks run the same speed no matter what data is on them.
I've not idea what SBC is though. |
