Defrag won"t run
My comp. is so slow
Try to run defrag but it doesen"t happen Any help apreciated |
have you tried the windows defrag programs? if you can, get a diffrent degragger that will do the defrag on boot.
(defrag before it gets in windows will allow the program to defrag even the system files. something that windows cannot do because it's in use.) diskeeper 2007 was recommended in the last pcworld. theres a trial too. |
Thanks. I'll give it a try
I have windows 98.....stupid........ Anything I have tried needs Windows 2000 or above |
also do you have any free space on your computer?????
make sure to delete files in temp directories, recycle bin, and other applications you installed and no longer use. |
Cynthetiq is right, you need at least 20% free space to Defrag. Windows 98?? OMG.....
|
i don't have 98 on any of my systems, but there is a flag for 2000 and up to force it to defrag with less then 20%
|
98!? fuck! hmm. backup, format, install XP, then defrag the cleaner system. maybe it's time to upgrade computer?
|
You won't find many alternatives for win9x. My vote goes with Raxco's perfectdisk over diskeeper, but it doesn't support '98 either.
With win9x's built-in defragmenter you should safe-boot first else it'll restart continually when other programs touch the disk. Restart, wait for the POST power-up beep, then start hitting F8 until you get to the safe boot menu. |
run msconfig, stop everything you can from running on startup, make sure your power settings are to never go off, disabling screen saver, restart & try defragging. Go buy beer, drink beer, sleep it off, check computer. Repeat as necessary.
|
ha. true that. The stupid defragger stopped everytime the screensaver or the mouse clicked something. it was hell! I'm glad It's not like that anymore!
|
Thanks gang.
I finally got it to run. Computer is much happier |
BubbaSpike, usually defrag won't run if you have other running programs writing to the hard drive. Check to see what's running in the background and terminate those resources. Windows98 is really anal about defrag period, let alone with something else is using the hard drive. Programs writing to the hard drive during a defrag will also cause it to consistantly restart the defrag.
