Where to buy a domain name?
Where is the best place to buy a domain name from? I don't need hosting right away, but will eventually.
Do you get any documentation or information on how to use your new domain name once you buy it? |
godaddy is the best and cheapest.
http://maddogdomains.com/ is what i use. Good service and good prices.

I have a package through Angelfire that gives me my own domain name. I'm starting to run into storage issues but my bandwidth is never even close to my limit
godaddy is where I've been buying for a year or so now.
another vote for godaddy.
Go through godaddy, but do not sign up for ANYTHING. Pay attention to what you click on. Make sure you UNCHECK any boxes that may be checked before you read them. They try to get you to sign up for so much extra shit... just get the domain.
I just bought one from 1 and 1 and they were cheaper than godaddy...
So shop around. |
I've heard that Network Solutions is a good place to buy them from... my old company hosted and maintained websites, and only went through Network Solutions to purchase domains... excellent customer service.
Just bought mine from GoDaddy.
Very pleased. |
There's been some recent negative press on GoDaddy - for instance, read Slashdot | GoDaddy Holds Domains Hostage.
my mom has godaddy and it's been great for years. like the above poster said, DEFINITELY make sure you don't have anything "checked" that is pre-checked for you that signs you up for shit you don't need. other than that, it's good service.
I bought a couple from 1&1. They were cheaper than GoDaddy, and I've been very pleased with them.
Stay away from Network Solutions. They are very expensive, and staffed by idiots and assholes.
for domain and hosting, www.dreamhost.com, great deals on hosting but good on domain also. Domains are $9.95 a year, but the extra dollar means you dont have to use godaddy, which everyone seems to be abandoning like rats on a sinking ship.
I use dreamhost as a hosting provider, and I just registered 2 domains from 1&1.com because they were cheapest and not this whole check this box for that, blah blah blah like godaddy.com
What was $36 at godaddy.com including privacy was less than $12 at 1&1. let's see if I get what I pay for.. or if they provide same for same with less $$$ out my pocket. |
I personally use Namecheap... They're about the same price as GoDaddy but you don't have to deal with all the obnoxious advertising trying to sell you stuff you don't need (which is what I absolutely detest about GoDaddy).
I'd stay away from Register.com at all costs. They're extremely expensive AND when your domain expries, they call you on the phone daily to hassle you even if you already renewed or transfered your domain elsewhere. |
