Crack 06-03-2006 04:35 PM

windows 98 and usb

Can someone please explain to me how this is supposed to work, because I can't find a patch, or anything really that will make win98 (not SE) work with my USB drive.

There has to be something I am missing here...

98 needs drivers for all USB devices find them online from the manufacturer install and try again. 2k and xp do not need additional drivers for most USB devices but 98 is not that lucky.

do you have a 2k or xp system? when it detects it, it will say.

yes, I do have a winXP computer, good idea! <3

I thought Win98 didn't offer support for USB? Only the second revision did?

billege 06-04-2006 04:32 PM

That's correct. Win98 SE and WinME ( < < teh suckz0r) offered native USB support, plain ole 98 requires you find the correct driver for the USB drive.

Actually, you're thinking one version later. Windows 95 didn't offer USB support native, although there was a limited implementation of USB support in OSR 2. Win 98 and later has native support for USB, although there are some (most) who say any 9x USB implementation is broken.

EDIT - billege, I apologize. I misunderstood your post. However, that's still not entirely right. Every version of Windows requires drivers for any USB device. The difference is that the NT kernel comes with most of the ones you need out of the box. The later 9x versions offer better support for hardware, but none of them are perfect that way.

Yeah, I remember that now. Duh! I have used Win98 (non SE) with various USB devices easily. Oops.

Holy upgrade batman... find someone with a copy of Win2K they're done with. Win 9x + USB = headache!
