Comp problem, of course
 

I am having some unusual computer problems, well unusual to me. I recently replaced my motherboard because of previous computer problems. My computer worked fine for a few weeks and now all of the suddent it just freezes up for a few seconds at a time every 5 to 6 seconds like its busy working on something. The little busy hour glass thing pops up even while typing this message. I really dont know how this happened please help. This all started when I decided to restart my computer by the way.

How much ram?

I have 640 MB of Rambus Ram. 2 x 64 and 2 x 256

have you checked for malware? and are you sure its a good board, the site said referbished. what were the previous problems?

Yeah, it could be a problem with the board, but it worked perfect for several weeks until i restarted my computer. How would i narrow it down to a motherboard problem? NOt exactly sure what malware is.

The previous problem was that it would just freeze up at random times and permanently. Also it would not start up properly.

The problem I am experiencing now is that it seems like the computer is trying to figure something out every few moments.

You really need to look at what is running. I'll assume you are running Windows XP, though you don't actually say - open up Task Manager (right click on an empty bit of the start bar and and choose "Task Manager"), then choose the "Processes" tab, and sort by the CPU column and report back on the "Image Name" that ends up at the top (ignoring "System Idle Process" if it is at the top).

You can keep task manager open and see what is jumping to the top.

malware is basically programs on your system that you did not install and don’t want on there, ie spyware, viruses, worms, adware, etc.

try scanning for them and see if its clean, also try what spindles said, see if you can narrow the cause to a process.

Is the hard drive light always on when this happens?

yes - suspect the hard drive.
