Pure network magic

I've been using this during it's free trial period and think it works great. Does anyone know of a freeware alternative that does the same thing? Using XP on a small home network, but I suck at setting up a network myself. Tried using the network wizard that comes on XP, but still can't access files across the network, though the printer works. TIA

Do you have a screenshot or an error message? In brief:

1. Make sure your firewall is properly configured on each machine (in the case that each machine you have runs its own firewall software). You want to make sure Remote File and Printer sharing traffic is allowed in and out of each PC.

* Be especially careful you do not allow file sharing traffic to enter or leave your home network (have a hardware firewall from Linksys or D-Link etc sitting just behind your DSL or cable modem) *

2. Make sure that the machines are a part of the same workgroup or domain.

3. Make sure your access restrictions are set properly in each Properties window of the folder you're trying to get at.

4. Make sure the access restrictions on each file's property window is set properly.

That's a start anyway. Are you using Windows XP across the board or different operating systems?

XP pro on one, home one the other. I'll check your recommendations too.

Simple filesharing is the only type of sharing available under XP Home. Make sure both systems are using it.

Open up My Computer and go to the Tools menu, then Folder Options.
Once there, go to the View Tab. At the bottom of the list of options, you'll see an option to enable or disable Simple File Sharing. Make sure it is enabled on both systems.

There are fundamental differences between Simple and Advanced file sharing - Guest account restrictions, passwords, shares too.

Here is a start, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040 .

Went through home networking about 1 1/2 ago, I had to install/set up Netbios/Netbui in networking. Now all is peachy, Internet among 3 PCs, sharing files on wirless network...

trache--many thanks. It's always the most obvious things that are overlooked. I had disabled simple file sharing a while ago and forgotten about it. Thanks again.
