What media player do you use?
 

Subject says it all. I've been using Winamp5 for a year or two now, using it more recently to play videos and such more than MP3's. Is there anything new or interesting (and free!) that I should try out? I was thinking of downloading iTunes for its CD ripping capabilities, although I want a straight MP3 rip without any DRM wrapping it up (and I wanna play it on my PSP!). Any suggestions?

I still use windows media player on my good computer, but on my old laptop and my old computer I run VLC media player on both.

For audio, WinAmp.

For video, VLC or mplayer.

I'm interested in Songbird, but I haven't downloaded it yet.

I've used WinAmp for a good long time for both videos and audio ... it's been good to me (especially with the plugin to sync my Nano)

foobar for music, Media Player Classic for video. foobar2000 is a no-nonsense media player that supports virtually any format, and has a very small memory footprint. Likewise, MPC (link) is a modified version of Windows Media Player v 6, which isn't as bloated as other video players

Winamp or XMMS for audio
VLC or BSPlayer for video

I don't think I need to explain Winamp or XMMS. VLC is great because it's very lightweight and can play pretty much anything, even if you DON'T have the codecs installed. It is also great for watching video with AC3 5.1 audio. However, I use BSPlayer when I can because of two things. Primarily, I dislike that VLC doesn't support using the arrow keys to jump ahead and behind at small increments. Less importantly, I like the aesthetic of BSPlayer: the video "window" is all by itself with absolutely nothing around it, and the mouse's scrollwheel can be used to zoom in and out in small increments.

Audio - iTunes

I use iTunes for audio and ripping CDs. iTunes doesn't put any DRM on the stuff you rip from CDs. You do have to go into the settings and tell it rip to MP3 format instead of AAC though. Only the songs you buy from the iTunes Music Store have DRM on them.

For video, I still use a combination of Windows Media Player/Quicktime/Real Player. I haven't found a player that can handle all of the different formats while still being stable.

VLC on Mac and Pc (love VLC). WinAmp for audio on PC and iTunes on Mac. :-)

Foobar2000 for music, media player classic for video.

Foobr2000 is my only choice for music - it is the only interface that I can tolerate for more than five seconds and it is supports every codec that is in my collection 'out of the box',
not that picky about the very few videos I watch on the computers.

Winamp.. not because I like it, but because everything else I've tried is worse.

Windows Media Player doesn't have mp3 ripping capabilities by itself, but if you just install iTunes and load it once, it installs a DRM-less mpe codec in Windows Media Player, so that you can rip mp3's without any issue in WMP.

Winamp v.2.x or VLC for audio. Winamp does not play FLAC and some others, for me.

I use winamp cause I like the media library... that and it doesnt send its shit to MS every 30 seconds...

I use media player classic and CDex because they are simple and no frills.. they get the job done and do exactly what I need of them.. nothing more.. nothing less

audio: Winamp with FLAC plugin (FLAC is yummy)

Video: Divx Player or VS player

Audio wise I prefer iTunes over Winamp. I much prefer how it stores and organises everything, and I don't accidently play a video file in it and delete my playlist.
Video is whatever the format wants, but if there is a choice it'll usually be WMP.

iTunes for music, quicktime/realone for streaming video, and quicktime/vlc for video.

I think foobar2000 has finally won me over. With 0.9 and the Columns UI what was the dealbreaker, the lack of a volume control in the main window, is finally fixed. I actually spent an hour unsuccessfully trying to add one to 0.8 before I noticed the new versions. It's the only player I've used that plays long continuous audio acceptably: if split into seperate files, foobar actually does gapless playback properly (that was the thing that killed me about every media player before), and if in one big file, the cuesheet tracklisting is very handy. But in 0.9 they seem to have taken out some useful plugins like AC-3 decoding for DVD rips from the default install. It's also great for converting formats, for me usually FLAC rips to something lossy and smaller for convenience. Now I just have to make browsing the media library more like in Winamp and I'll be set.

i did have winamp on my work computer (it came with it installed) (dell) but it was getting to be a pain, seemed to take a hair longer to load up as opposed to WMP, soo i trashed it... i open and close alot for work with sfxs

For movies, I use a combination of BSplayer (v 1.22) and media player classic (latest version) and on occasion I use VLC. I have a dual monitor setup and BSplayer is nice for that, you have a small control window and then the actual player window.

I can't decide on a music player, I want small and simple. Something like itunes but without the bloat. Something like foobar but without the faff.

For video its Media Player Classic, fast, good interface, no bloat.
