Post count not changing.
I just noticed that my post count is not changing in my user profile. I don't know how long it has not been updating as I just noticed it, and I also don't know if anyone else is experiencing the the same thing.
|
Ok, looks like it is working now. (just like your car stops making the noise right when you take it to the mechanix :D ). I had just made like 5 posts earlier, and it didn't register any of them. Is there a lag between actual post and post count being updated?

posts dont count in some forums, e.g. nonsense

Well, considering your post count is inconsequential, I'm wondering why you even care.
|
Did I say something to offend you?
Because that remark sure seems aimed at discouraging me from contributing therefore increasing my post count. Your statement proves that obviously post count in an important factor in being "consequential" here, so I would rather know which forums further "inconsequentialness". It's a very benign queston really. |
It's generally quite simple. Pretty much everything on the site - with the exception of porn - has purpose. Porn is not a core value of TFP.
|
i'm still VERY new at this? what counts as a post? like replying to a topic already started or is a post like starting a topic? *holds head* and where do you see how many posts youve done? i know i havent done many at all i'm just curious? also why are all teh moderators and "admins" so upset when newbies have questions or problems or dont have many posts? were still getting the hang of this...
|
Folks in general get upset when the newbies ask questions, because many times their questions can be answered simply by reading the boards FAQ's and stickies that you find on the top of each forum. And take a look at the Tilted Newbies board too, there is a lot of useful information there.
As far as posts, as was stated already, some areas (like Tilted Nonsense) do not count towards your post count. But really, post count DOES NOT MATTER. Nobody cares if you have 5 or 5,000 posts. In order to find your post count, you can just click on your own name in a thread. Like right now I see you have 6 posts. |

inconsequential: "Lacking importance." I think the word you're thinking of is unsubstantial. EVERYONE'S post count is inconsequential.
A post is starting a new thread or responding to a thread. |

And although it may have seemed clear to you because you already knew the answer, the previous responses were too vague. Slimshaydee's post implied that there were many forums including "nonsense" that there was no count. Then SecretMethod70's post seemed to contradict that by saying that porn was the only thing that didn't count. |
While his number of posts may not be that significant, I've received some good information from mrklixx, especially the recommendation for the band Nightwish.
Stay around, man, I appreciate you. |
I have no wish to further provoke this post number matter - but I am genuinely confused now (believe me it happens a lot) but I have read that the post count is instrumental in getting rid of your rookie status not exactly sure what the point of that is, bit more respect from other posters i assume
|
shrug....my post count said 295 and I made about 10 posts and now it shows 302...dont matter to me but its always fun to see it get higher and change status...

It's funny how everyone is worried about their postcount all of a sudden. I WONDER WHY? lol.

Speaking of which, I don't have access... haha j/k Halx. ;) |
I remember back in the old tfp-2 when post count seemed to be everything ... I even got a pm from one of the few 1,000 plus posters welcoming me to the "thousand club."
I'm glad it's not that way anymore, because a lot of the old crap has dissappeared since the post count has been removed from all the main pages. |
It's funny how much people on this board talk about post counts and status! There's another board I chat on a lot, and a couple of months ago they did an upgrade and everyone's count went back to zero, a couple of people got pissed but mostly nobody cared. Why do people make such a big deal on here, does it really make a difference? I mean, at least for me I look at the content of what someone posts and not their status or post numbers...and hopefully people do the same when I post something and not assume that just because I only joined a couple of months ago, that I have nothing useful to contribute.
|
I've actually encountered this same problem. I know I have more than 3 posts, but according to my info, I have 3 posts.
|
Ok... and now it's working. Odd.
|
I think some people are just aware that in a lot of environments (work, social circles etc) evidence of your having contributed positively gives status. In this particular community a personalised title or an Avatar shows folks (without them having to look anywhere else) that a poster has been been contributing to the standard that those who decide these things would consider satisfactory or better. Evidence of ones ability to provide interesting and good quality input can only be a good thing ie: “maybe this is someone I should listen to”.
Its more important to some than others, I guess, but from what I can see showing your status seems to be encouraged here. Personally, I love the idea of fitting in to an established group if it is possible, and a lot of people probably feel the same way. And yeah, its better to have searched for a similar thread first, but you’ve all responded to it and at least one person has learnt something new. Namely, “Read da roolz”. (I often write this long winded bollocks. Tell me to shush If I’m wrong… |
OK, now why does it matter how many posts one has made?
Who cares? The more posts you make that are counted = the less of a life you have? Respond when inspired, contribute when you feel like it. Sorry, I'm done. |

On this date I have no Avatar and no personalised title. Would what I posted in this thread on 10-29-2004, 03:24 AM have been acknowledged if I did? Thats two consecutive posts that seem to have missed the point of what I said, that its not uncommon to pursue proof of status.
Should I have bothered...? |
who determines which posts count and which do not?
do mods have an extra button on each post to delineate this? if it's not an algorithmic thing built into vbulletin, wouldn't that make things tedious? i've been around for a while and am curious how this is accomplished. |
wow this post thing is a pretty big deal
i guess... i wonder if any of my nonsence oppinoins are deemed usefull content... o well if i get a email or pm sayign you are a lousy piece of shit ill know. |

posts in nonsense don't add to the post count |
dobster I'm not ignoring your comments, I just don't think they need much response. Yes, some people like to have visible evidence of being part of a group. However, by placing any focus on post count it becomes a point of getting into "that group" as opposed to having ones presence in "that group" be incidental. Additionally, it creates an environment where people who have avatars are more respected than those who don't.
From what I know of myself, the other moderators, and the rest of the users on TFP, posts are not discriminated against due to avatars or titles. People do not see a post with no avatar and skip over it or deem it unworthy of response. In your case, the lack of response I think was simply because it wasn't clear you were looking for a response. You pointed out that avatars show a person is an established member. Yes, they do - no response needed there. But if a person does not have an avatar, they are no less respected or considered. To address irateplatypus, with the exception of a few forums (and one can figure out which simply by thinking about what type of content TFP values), all posts are counted by default. As spectre said, only when a person spams do posts in regular forums not count - and that is by us manually resetting their post count to something closer to their pre-spamming levels. |

Not a side of Dobster that should be allowed to get onto the boards, I guess. ( the moody and reactionary side :o ) |

i dont understand this..... i think you are syaing that if i posted somthing on the nonsense board it will not count. implying i hadnt read the top of this thread. wich i had and i do get that. i had a brief sometimes permanent side of smart ass coming out. saying that my posts were nonsense. ( they arent i dont think) but thanks for clearing that up. |

I misunderstood your last post.. didn't realize you were calling some of your own posts nonsense. Sorry about that  |
