avatar size?
 

none of the pictures on my drive that i'd like to use for an avatar are even close to 100x100 (they're all like 600x600). how do i shrink them?

You can use any photo editing program such as Gimp or Photoshop. If you'd like I can hel pyou as well - it literally takes about 5 seconds so all you'd have to do is send it to me.

I use MS Photoeditor. I comes with the newer verison of MS Office.

With XP, there is a new generation of "Powertoys" that are available from the Microsoft Website. One of them is an "image resizer". It's a free download.

Since I am a newcomer, I was looking around for an avatar. On the "more ifo" button, it said something to the effect of "here is a current list of avatars", but I saw no list.

Do I need to meet some basic requirements or something before I am able to use an avatar?

yeap. use the search button, there should be plenty of info about it around... ;)

When i resize them, the quality of the pic is crappy~:P

It gets ugly when you make them smaller because you are cramming so much stuff into so little space.

Imagine a piece of bread. probably around 5 by 5 inches or something. Now take all that bread and squish it into a 1 by 1 inch piece. Not to pretty right? hehe

it also goes the other way, things that are small look horrid when they are enlarged. Because you are taking so little and making it bigger.

I like to use the sillyputty analogy, but bread works too.

not sure that i agree with bread or sillputty.

going smaller means that you are trying to make a picture with some level of detail look good with fewer pixles to define it. depending on the program it can do a horible job. but assuming that you don't enlarge the pic to view it, the pic usually will look close to the same as the original... just smaller.

trying to make a small pic bigger is like trying to get something for nothing... you can't make a picture have more detail in it that it started with. sure... some programs upscale and look "nice" at an increased resolution. but they have no extra detail in them.... it's just bigger is all.
