When I send a PM out, I often go to my sent folder to see how it looked; post-proofreading, in a sense.

When I do this, will it cause the PM to be marked as "read" or does it only get marked as "read" when the recipient receives, and reads it?

I'm pretty sure the read designation is about the recipient, not you.
