But I think having a little shout box area might be really cool!

What's a shout box?

it's a tag board where people can post whatever they want (with reason -- some of them come with profanity filters or other things you can filter out) The tagboard usually lives on the main page, and each comment can have upto maybe 100 or so characters --

A lot of websites have them...

I think that is a great idea......

there are so many ways to communicate on this forum... I resist adding this one to the list because of it's potential to be abused.

as for the shoutbox, I tend to agree with hal. There are so many areas of the board to communicate. I can see how it would be fun but I can also see how it could be bad.

What's really funny is to put a text box and buttons for "search" and "shoutbox" right next to each other. When people mistakenly click "shoutbox" and are searching for something embarassing, it gives everyone a good laugh to see your username on the shoutbox next to "all-natural penis enlargement." This is especially funny on boards entirely dedicated to porn, pass trading, etc. when someone with a particularly uncommon fetish accidentally shouts instead of searching.
