A way to make sure we have quality members, i think this actually could work.

Ok, i think this is a pretty good idea, if someone else has already said it, or anyone is already saying it, etc etc, im sorry, but here goes.

Alright, basically, right now, Active members get a #, their own unique number, and then, each active member, gets 2 numbers under them. And having this number is the only way to log in. So basically, it would work to where all the members would already be people that post, or friends of people who post(that they know will post in turn) I dont know if im making myself clear on this or not, i cant really think of how to explain it. but i think, if you could figure it out, it would solve lots of problems.

Im not describing it all that well, but basically, i think its the same one that is used on livejournal.com

Also, you could buy a number for like 15 dollars every 6 months, and if you're active, then your fee will stop, but inactives still have to pay.

I dunno, feel free to tear into my idea, as i know its probably rather hard to impliment or something..

phredgreen 07-05-2003 12:43 PM

holy jumping shit in a popcorn can.... that seems like alot of work... i like our idea better. people who don't participate or somehow donate to the betterment of the tfp get cut off. a much better idea in my opinion.

Stare At The Sun 07-05-2003 12:54 PM

i know it seems hella complicated, and i didnt do a good job of explaining it, but i think someone could figure it out. and plus, people will just spam to shit, and you cant ban ip's cause of the dial up problem. :(

Fallon 07-16-2003 06:44 AM

Lemme guess, this is basically a sponsership thing?? "I'm an active member, I know this person, and they're cool, here's a number" Right?

Peetster 07-16-2003 07:24 AM

Sounds like Amway. ;-)

TIO 07-17-2003 12:05 AM

It's the same system used at deadjournal.com.

The problem is, it would reduce the board to a small group of people who are all connected in real life. It would drastically reduce the variety of posters we get here, too.

I, for one, wouldn't have been able to join.

CSflim 07-26-2003 11:34 AM

That sucks! You either have to buy your way in, or you have to know somebody "on the inside".

To hell with that! Sounds far too much like real life.

Lol, well, those all are good points, hey, im just trying to think of ways to get these fucking titty board leechers out of here, and for good, but, *shurg*, its still an issue that needs to be adressed

CSflim 07-26-2003 02:42 PM

The current way works fine.

Jakejake 07-26-2003 06:01 PM

It wouldn't be a very fair system. I don't know anyone on here except through this board, and I assume a lot of people are in this situation.

Stare At The Sun 07-26-2003 08:50 PM

I mean, i just see things getting out of hand, with tons of new non posting memebers, imo thats not what this site is about, or you could issue temporary numbers, and you have to have atleast five posts, etc, i dunno, im just putting my idea out there

oldtimer 07-26-2003 10:36 PM

Whenever the Titty Board gets AXED, then that is the only time you will see the true members stay behind and continue talking. If only for a month, the Titty Board was restricted to <b>everyone</b> then that'd do some good. Like Hal said, I don't care about the Titty Board I don't even go in there. Me? I seldomly browse it but that is usually 1 in 50 anyway. Plus, there isn't really anything in there that I haven't seen in my time <i>surfing for porn</i>.

I am not a number... I am a free man! ;-)

sure you are, 24601.

Run to the hills!

why is everyone here so eager to exclude people? for christ sake it's the internet. just because someone doensn't post a lot doesn't mean that they should be banned to lepers island. maybe you should give special things to people that donate, like a monthly gift of some sort. that's what penny arcade (a gaming news/webcomic) does, and they can fully survive on their site. i used to really love this site, a great community plus free porn (the links board not the titty board) now it just seems too much like real life. and if i wanted to live in the real world i wouldn't have bought a cable modem.

let's put it this way: when there are a lot of lurkers using up our bandwidth and CPU power and not giving ANYTHING back (donations or posts), it has often gotten to the point where at peak times the site is VERY slow or, worse yet, shuts down.

We members who actually participate in various areas of the board - and there are many of us - do not like this and don't deserve it just so someone who gives nothing back to the community here can look at some boobies.

It's a party here, and all we ask is that people aren't wallflowers. Either bring some chips and salsa and donate, or join one of the many conversations being had. Don't spend all your time at our party doing your own thing in the corner.

If you want a site that has lots of free porn and doesn't expect anything of you, go to one of the thousand other ones on the internet that are riddled with ads. This site isn't about the porn, it's about the community. We just happen to enjoy porn as well.

EDIT: oh yeah, and doners DO get something. If someone wants to not participate on the site very frequently at all and still be able to come back often, all they have to do is donate and sit back and enjoy the ride. Of course, most people donate because they realize how valuable participation is on this site and they ejoy being a part of it.

good thread. gonna drop my 2cents: i like the titty board as much as the next guy... but there's SOOOO MUCH MORE to tfp that makes it one of the most kick ass communities on the web... unfortunately the openness and diversity that makes tfp great also allows leachers... to me it's a necessary and acceptable evil when one considers life w/ our this great community

AP1 08-22-2003 05:41 PM

hmm.. make that live without... not "life w/ our"

ssander9 08-24-2003 04:58 AM

Well....What got me here in the first place was the TB. Soon after I arrived people with less activity had been cut off from the TB, but I had posted enough in there and other forums to retain my TB privalege. This website has so many different forums that it is very hard to manage I would think. I also agree that there are enough forums that if someone honestly wanted to participate they will find a topic they are interested in. I owned a website not even half this size and it was a 24/7 job. Hal is very lucky to have the great Administrators and Moderators helping him or this would go to hell in a handbasket fast. Oh crap, sorry got off the subject.

IMHO: It would be next to impossible to weed out all the bandwith stealing leaches, mainly because when they are banned they can just come back with a different name and seek revenge of some kind.
My Idea: Have a list that pops up for the people that don't participate enough, maybe just a private message, that NICELY asks them to participate more and explaining to them that due to their lack of participation they are in danger of losing the privalige to continue membership here. I don't know what that ratio is, but it could be set to auto PM someone that isn't active in a set amount of time.
When I ran my website is was free membership, but participation was a must much like here. It took a long time to weed out the many leaches and end up with a great community. It even took longer to rebuild after an attack by hackers that didn't like being banned. That is the reason for it's demise. As we all know, a good website is usually word of mouth, then gets posted in some newsgroup somewhere and then all hell breaks lose. I say good luck to all involved in the rules process and thank all of you, members included, for making this such a great place to visit everyday.

cowudders14 09-05-2003 01:54 AM

I don't know whether it would be possibel to implement (I know very little about code too) but here's my idea on this:

Allow new members one month of try-out or something. Then, at the end of that month, if they have not posted (and don't count posts in the erogenous zone unless they are thread staters - goes into the debate about thread starts being counted differently to reply posts blah...) then they get booted. Unless they have donated of course...

Would that be possible?

hehe, just got an image of 4000 people at a party with 17000 others lurking in the corners and masturbating.

Out of interest, how do you cull lurkers? Is it done manually, or do you use a script? If it is done manually, would you be able to save time by running a script that bumped off everyone who had been registered x days and made y visits, but made no posts? Could you also get it to send them an automated e-mail to explain why they got reaped so they didn't do it again? I know I used to be a lurker and didn't really realise it was a problem until I got the chop. I didn't know why it'd happened so I emailed someone to ask about it. When I realised, I reregistered and started participating more.
