patrick Surtain to Chiefs? why would Dolphins do this?

I can't seem to find an explanation. I confess my ingorance. Anyone care to inform me why such a trade was made?

A premier CB for a second round pick ?

I guess the Dolphins want some cap room... for a running back... like Sean Alexander.

From the article I read, Surtain for a second round pick was what the Dolphins were looking for. The Chiefs had thought they could get him for a second round pick, but after Buchanon of the Raiders was dealt to the Texans for a 2nd and 3rd rounder, the Chiefs had to up their offer. A 2nd round draft pick in the NFL is valuable; you can get very quality players (e.g., Surtain). In comparison to the only other prominent draft, it is hit and miss (much more miss) when drafting a player in the second round of the NBA.

The Dolphins also would have had to sign Surtain to a long-term deal, and in the time being, he was eating up their cap space at a charge of 8.3 million for this season.

Look at two of the most successful teams in the NFL over the last several years. Two years ago when the Eagles lost Bobby 'the blanket' Taylor and Troy Vincent, I thought their secondary would suffer, but they had two young guys come in and solidify themselves as good starting cornerbacks.

When the Patriots lost Poole and Law to injury last year, they had a couple talented players come in and contribute to another Super Bowl title. Thus, Law has been expendable, where areas last off-season he got away with calling Belichick a liar and still stayed with the team.

Here is the article I mentioned http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...len&id=2043410

cap room is just about as valuable as field talent. it's a great deal for the dolphins, and since the team wasn't going anywhere next year anyway (and surtain wasn't staying long-term) it makes sense to get rid of him now, even if it means you only win 2 games instead of 3 next year. if they can parlay that pick for surtain into travis henry, then use their top pick on braylon edwards or alex smith, they'll be huge winners in this draft.

What I've been reading is that with Big Nick coming into Miami and switching their D-scheme he wants more "reliable" cover corners. Surtain has put up fantastic numbers but is not excatly a "cover" corner. He plays with too much space and takes too many chances--sure he makes alot of plays because of those instincts and has racked up the INTs, but he also gets burned alot becuase of a misread and going for the turnover rather than trying to prevent the catch.

But the biggest reason as has alredy been mentioned is to free up cap space! Miami is in some trouble with all the vets they have on D and have to cut somewhere.
