Archie to Chargers - Don't draft Eli

I'm desperately searching for a source, but apparently Archie Manning has told the Chargers to not draft Eli Manning because he wishes to play in New York.

More to come...

Personally, I don't like this if it's true. You are eliminating any leverage the Chargers may have in a trade with the Giants.

Superbelt 04-21-2004 07:50 PM

I heard it too. Manning's stock and my image of his maturity just dropped.
Sure, noone wants to play for SD. Look what Schottie did to Brees. The team actually doesn't even have ONE man signed to the offensive line. That O-Line makes Pittsburgh's problems seem trivial.

But the kid entered the draft, and when you do you play by the rules. That means you go to the team who picked you. Now not only has the kid dictated something he isn't allowed to do but it got leaked and this could very possibly hurt SD's trading ability.

Immature Punk.

Ace_O_Spades 04-21-2004 08:16 PM

How will the team treat him when he comes as well

"he didnt want to play for us anway... THAT makes me want to block for him"

wrongfullyaccuzd 04-21-2004 11:04 PM

How come Archie is being such a jerk about SD? I mean sure they're no good, but Indy was 42-54 in the 6 years before they drafted Peyton, and I don't remember Archie fussing then. SD is 31-65 in the past 6 years...not too much worse.

Archie leaked it, not Eli.

Hrothgar 04-22-2004 01:33 AM

San Diego is getting no respect.

Mondak 04-22-2004 06:06 AM

SD doesn't deserve respect. I think the Manning clan see what others do: thre reason Drew Brees is not doing well in SD is not Drew Brees. He has ZERO protection and he has no one to throw to. Drafting Manning does not fix either of those problems and the fact that the CHARGERS don't see that is the crux of the issue.

I remember the first game of the season last year when the Chargers played the Cheifs and got served. (heh heh always wanted to use that) Brees threw something like 4 interceptions and people (who must not havae watched the game) blamed the loss on him. Three of the four INTs hit WRs in the numbers and then went to the other team. There was one late in the game after Brees had gotten knocked down 400 times that he actually threw, but I blame the OL or rather lack therof.

The Chargers suck and the want to move to LA. Marty is retarded for not addressing this.

bond007 04-22-2004 09:58 AM

plus, there's better endorsement deals if Eli's in New York!

Spartak 04-22-2004 12:17 PM

Moving down to Giants' #4 could help SD, provided that Oakland pick Roy Williams, and Arizona pick Larry Fitz (like they are all projected to), SD could walk away with Gallery.

But that begs the question: Why would they risk it, and not select Gallery 1st overall ?

I mean a guaranteed remedy for an ailing O-line is better than gambling in return for useless draft picks and some backups.

Hanxter 04-22-2004 12:26 PM

dan patrick has talked to schott and schott has denied it - marty and archie are on sportscenter tonight...
a lot of giants fans around here want eli... beware of the raiders

djtestudo 04-22-2004 01:08 PM

They had Archie Manning on the NFL Live draft show this afternoon. He was saying that the Chargers and the commissioner asked him to meet with the team to try and get Eli to want to play there. After several meetings, he said Eli still had the same opinion. He said that he had nothing to do with the decision, and that nowhere were the Giants or any other team mentioned in any conversation.

I think he had more to do with this then he says, but also that it was Eli's request, and was never ment to go public.

Mondak 04-22-2004 01:44 PM

If you build your offense around your line your team will be very good for a long time. Stay Young, deep and talented on the OL and good things will happen. Gallery is an anchor. You saw what LT did last year behind that POS line. Imagine if he gets some holes to run in. That offense does not need the best QB in the world. Make a dominating line on both sides of the ball with this draft and churn clock and dirt all day long.

Move down to 4, get another pick in RD 2 (number 36 overall?) and hope that it goes Manning, Rothlesburger, Fitzgerald. The only wild card would be the Raiders. If the Cards picked anything other than Fitzgerald or a QB at #3 I think their fans would kill them.

Besides, who the F*&k is Manning going to throw to? Here are the WRs on the Chargers roster as of today:

82 Reche Caldwell WR 25 5-11 194 2 Florida
87 Tim Dwight WR 28 5-9 180 6 Iowa
85 Kevin Dyson WR 28 6-1 208 6 Utah
86 Grant Mattos WR 23 6-2 220 R USC
81 Kassim Osgood WR 23 6-5 209 R San Diego State
88 Eric Parker WR 25 6-0 180 2 Tennessee
11 Micah Ross WR 28 6-2 221 2 Jacksonville

The last number in each line is years of experience. There is not a suck rating. I hope these Douche Bags pick an OL. Jesus the Chargers suck. I hope they move to LA....jerks

Jesus Malverde 04-22-2004 05:24 PM

Strange that Eli Manning wouldn't want to go to a crappy team; the Colts were just as shitty (if not worse) than the Chargers when they picked up Peyton.

djtestudo 04-22-2004 06:32 PM

Reports are now that Eli has said he'll sit out the year rather then sign with the Chargers.

Right now, Paul Tagliabue needs to be on the phone with him, explaining that he WILL play where he is drafted or he will be banned from the league.

It's one thing to request that the team not draft you because you'd rather play elsewhere, which was what I thought he had been saying. It's another to refuse like this. It eliminates much of the leverage the team has to make trades, and completely disrespects the fans, who DO NOT forget.

J.D. Drew did it, and he can't show his face in Philadelphia without being booed. Steve Francis did it, and though I still cheer for him as a Maryland player, I think what he did to Vancouver was reprehensible. And I live in a city where the name of John Elway is cursed forever and he is blamed as one of the last straws in causing the Colts to move.

Ace_O_Spades 04-22-2004 06:48 PM

this just strikes me as so goddamn immature dammit

grr

djtestudo 04-22-2004 06:51 PM

At least Peyton had the testicular fortitude to go to a terrible team and turn them into an elite team.

No wonder Ole Miss never won squat.

Zeld2.0 04-22-2004 08:13 PM

i agree if Tagliabue wants to save the integrity of the game or the face of the NFL right now he really needs to get Manning in check..

The game of football is being destroyed by figures who feel they are bigger than teh game and don't have to play by the rules

Spartak 04-23-2004 02:14 AM

I don't get Eli.

Sitting out a year because a bad team drafted you ? Missing out on a years worth of pay (probably 6-10 mil if he plays his cards right ?), because you think the team will do poorly.

Look at Terry Bradshaw, going to the Steelers in the early 70s, the Steelers were coming off a really bad season, and then they only went to win 4 superbowls and virtually dominate the decade.

Anyway, isn't it every college players dream to play in the NFL, now he has the chance not only to play, but to start on an NFL team. A team that does have some glaring holes (WRs, OL, CBs), but has an unbelievable stud at running back as an unbeatable safety valve. I mean if he gets pressured at all, he could just call some run plays at the line of scrimmage and let LT pound the defence some.

Mondak 04-23-2004 08:52 AM

His father played for a crappy organization his whole life and does not want his son to do the same thing. The Chargers are crappy to the core and really do not have a clear plan to becomming a winner. They manage their roster with duct tape and bubble gum instead of really looking at a roadmap to building a long term winner. This is very differnt from the Colts or Steelers. This whole organization is a circus. They spin their wheels and continue to be in the same place. They say the reason they are bad is they have a bad stadium and can't make enough money. That is a load of shit. The TV rights alone can cover the roster cap for them. And I can tell you firsthand they are not losing money on the beer sales.

The Chargers have been bad long enough that at this point, even if they were bad, they should be young, stupid, bad, but at least talented. Upside! (thanks Hubie). They are not really.

It is still crappy that this is out. This whole thing should be said behind closed doors and they should work it out on their own and be free to trade the pick or to draft someone else without having egg on their faces.

Averett 04-23-2004 09:21 AM

Boo fuckin hoo. Poor Eli Manning.

"I don't want to go to a crappy team"

Too damn bad.

Besides, it's San Diego... Perfect weather all year round. Suck it up.

crewsor 04-24-2004 09:08 AM

Ha ha ha.... the Chargers took the little asshat anyway. This should be interesting.

Mondak 04-24-2004 10:40 AM

The Chargers did pretty good as far as PICKS go in return for the QB Swap. The main problem is that Rivers does not address any of their problems since the QB "problem" that they have is because they have no WRs (Fitzgerald is a Cardinal, good job guys) and they have no protection for the QB (Gallery is a Raider - smart).

Have fun Rivers. Your career is now ruined.

Not that I agree with this, because as you can tell from my Eli a Charger post, I don't. But, the difference here is when Peyton went to the Colts, they had started beefing up their O line in the previous 2 drafts. This doesn't seem to be the case with San Diego. Anyways, it doesn't matter anymore. The little douchbag got his way! It really pisses me off when someone like Pat Tillman drops a 9 million dollar contract to go fight and die for our country, and this little scumbag won't go to a team because they suck! It's just not right.

grayman 04-24-2004 11:43 AM

At least Drew Brees will get some vindication after the Chargers continue to suck this year.

quest1mark 04-26-2004 05:21 AM

i think eli manning is a whining rich boy, and i hope his career takes a nose dive in new york.

its the draft. the teams pick you, you dont pick a team. just like his dumbass brother in indy, who after this summer every quarterback will want a salary comparable to payton manning. now, every first draft prospect will see what eli did and choose not to play for a losing team.

even though i hate kerry collins, i hope he beats eli for the starting job.

jobu 04-27-2004 12:39 PM

it was a shame to see eli manning acting so selfish when you had someone like pat tillman sacrafice so much.

jasonresno 04-27-2004 02:43 PM

and we have our answer.

SiphonX 04-27-2004 02:44 PM

peyton went to the colts when they were rebuilding, and archie was buddies w/ owner so he knew they'd take care of his son. anyhow... whats up w/ all this archie talk, i really hate that guy, he was a pretty bad football player, career stats have already been surpassed by peyton in half the time =\ . eh, o well. eli sucks too! peyton is the only worthwhile QB along w/ marino, and favre, every1 else is an overhyped bitch, including stabler, elway, montana, brady, and namath.

djtestudo 04-27-2004 03:38 PM

Archie was a decent QB on an awful team, which is why he got involved; unlike the Colts, who had a good base and GM, the Chargers are stagnating and likely would stay that way. I don't think he SHOULD have been involved, but I can understand why he was.

That kind of talk can get you shot in Denver. I am pretty sure Constantine would dieify him if he was still around. . .
