Now that NHL D-Day is over, what's everyone think of recent trades?
Toronto and Ottawa made off like bandits, Vancouver did a couple good trades and finally got rid of that Umberger fuck, Washington KEPT Kolzig but not much else, the Rangers had a massive fire sale, and it all got overshadowed by Bertuzzi's cheap shot. I really couldn't believe how cheap some of these guys went for. Francis for a fourth round pick, Salo AND a 6th round pick for Tom Gilbert (hasn't played in the NHL), Carter for Jared Aulin, Gonchar, Nedved, Kovalev, Lang, Bondra, it was nuts this year.
|
I'd say the majority of the trades were quite fair. Vancouver got some good deals, though not the one we were apsiring for [O'Neill].
The one bad trade, in my opinion, was the Morris one. Phoenix seems to have gotten the deal in this one, since Morris seems like a solid defenceman. Correct me if I'm wrong. Ditto on the cheap deals though. |
Nah, Vancouver REALLY wanted Kolzig, but Washington wasn't selling, even to Colorado's traditionally massive offers (they tried to get Mario Lemieux!! last year lol).
|
I thought the biggest ones were Bure to Dallas and Lang to Detroit.
Is it me or is Chicago just dumping everyone they have for conditional draft picks. It looks to me as if the hawks have just abandoned hope of ever winning another cup. Oh well...Go Wings!!!! Here is the complete list of trades by team from the NHL homepage |
I'm REALLY pissed that my favorite player in Francis went to the team I hate the most in the Leafs.
There weren't too many big trades today, kind of quiet. Most of the bigger ones already went down earlier in the week, though. |
Is it me or are the leafs getting older and older?? Francis and Leetch arent' exactly spring chickens - but they can still play so i'm not complaining that much.
but i agree, they didnt' have to give up much for these guys.. |
They signed 37 year old Calle Johansson out of retirement too remember ;)
|
I personally liked most of the trades by the AVS except for getting rid of Morris. I feel like the AVS now traded Drury for Gratton and I, like most AVS fans, really miss Drury...
|
My god do the Leafs know people under 35 can play in this league, don't get me wrong Leetch and Francis are quality players but jesus are they old.
|
They call Francis's trade to the Leafs the biggest trade at the deadline. I hate how everything that happens to the leafs is just blown up and seen as the biggest trade ever or something stupid like that.
|
luckily the leafs have a lot of depth.. they need it cuz the old timers WILL get injured come playoff time.
|
Bure to Dallas, yeah, like they need more good forwards, what they need is another Hatch. Those mooks decided to let Hatch go and not pursue him actively.... damn you Tom Hicks, damn you.

I don't think the Morris trade was an especially horrible one, but it wasn't nearly as much as a steal for the Avs as Salo or Hendrickson.
But, Go_AVS is right, Drury for Gratton is just plain awful. |
I think people are overlooking that fact that this is Francis's last year in the NHL and this is his last chance to make a run at the Cup with his childhood favorite team. Leetch is old but is still one of the best offensive d-men in the NHL. His talent has been drowned out in NY for so long that he fell off the radar. He's killed my Isles many times.
Agreed on Drury for Gratton being brutal. What do people think of the Rangers trades? |
Karel Rachunek's okay, and I don't know anything about the prospect, but Ottawa got the better deal in deVries. The rest of it was pure salary dumping. We'll see how well they did if they make the playoff in 2 or 3 years.
|
Gonchar and Nylander to Boston....Bruins haven't lost since they got here...Gonchar has 2 goals and 1 assist and Nylander has 4 assists since the trade....
Meanwhile....Toronto has gone 2-2 at home... |

With Bondra no longer available, suddenly it was Sergei Gonchar who would be their saviour, at least until it looked like Boston would be the ones to pick him up. Then he simply became "too expensive". They finally managed to get Leetch, followed by Francis, and suddenly they act like they're going to single-handedly bring Toronto the Cup. |
As for Ottawa, they managed to get two good players for next to nothing. They got Bondra for a song, mostly because he's going to be a free-agent next year. They also got deVries for Rachunek, who didn't even want to be in Ottawa in the first place (not enough ice-time, apparently).

Hmmm, I think the canucks did pretty well. Considering they got 2 solid forwards (1st-2nd liners) for essentially nothing.
Hopefully they can fill in for Bertuzzi. Perhaps the Rangers did the right thing, dumping off all their players. First of all, they clearly aren't going anywhere-might as well start from scratch. And secondly, there may be a new collective bargaining agreement/possible salary cap and general mystery about the upcoming years, so they may benefit from the salary dump. |
I am glad the Canucks actually did something year.
I can't believe how cheap most of the trade were. |
