White to stay at OU

NORMAN - Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, less than a week after winning the Heisman Trophy, has told teammates he will return for a sixth season next year.
White, who has thrown for 3,744 yards and 40 touchdowns this season, could have entered the NFL draft.

But after talking to his parents and coach Bob Stoops, the Tuttle native decided to return.

White qualified for another season of eligibilty under NCAA bylaw 20.6.1, the five-year, 10-semester waiver.

Student-athletes have five years in which to complete four years of eligibility. The bylaw stipulates that when a student-athlete's eligibility is delayed by circumstances beyond personal control, such as injury, the five-year period may be extended.

White suffered a back injury in 1999 and a season-ending knee injury in 2002.

"Anyone who has played college football will understand (my decision)," White said in a statement. "I had been leaning this way and just decided today that I am sure this is what I want to do. I really look forward to another year at Oklahoma."

definately not good for us texas fans eh?

i think this is the right choice for him. if he went into the draft, he'll get picked maybe 3rd or 4th round, but if he really proves himself next year, his stock could be much more valuable.

now it looks like pretty much EVERYONE is returning on the OU squad. the most noticable loss will be mike stoops, but venebles (?) should easily fill those shoes.

i wish him good luck, except on oct 11th ;).

If he stays healthy next season and has a season remotely near as good as this year, he could be a first-rounder, maybe even a Heisman repeat.

Vashon 12-19-2003 10:01 PM

Omg if White wins the Heisman next year i swear to god im gonna kill myself. It was so bullshit that Larry Fitzgerald didnt get it this year. They really need to change the voting system for this, matter of fact change all of collage football.

Aaarrggghhh, but it is a good decsion I really think he needs to prove himself a little more, make sure this year wasn't a fluke. I know he had a good year this year but he really hasn't played that much football due to injuries. <p>Not only Texas not excited this OSU fan isn't all that happy either.

What the hell are you bitching about? Change the voting system? Change college football?

Maybe he won it because his team is playing in the championship game as well as performing pretty well himself in the regular season.

I honestly think this is a bad move for him, and no, this isn't the Longhorn fan in me speaking :) I don't think his stock will go up any higher next year. I mean, he had a freaking huge year this year which is likely going to culminate in a national championship. Coming back just invites more of a chance for his knees to get blown out again. He is never going to be a first round draft choice, and really should be happy to get picked in by the third.

I disagree - I think it is probably the wisest move he could have made. As a Sooner fan I'm glad to see him return - next year should be great if he can stay healthy. I don't really feel that Jason has a real future in pro ball. I have a feeling he'll be around for a long time as a coach somewhere - perhaps even at Norman in some capacity. With his past medical history I really doubt that the pros are all that interested in him. He runs the chance of blowing a knee every time he walks on the field - or perhaps anytime he walks period - the other injuries had nothing at all to do with contact - he's more protected under college rules than he would be in the pros.

It really depends on where he sees himself later. If he thinks he has a chance in the NFL, then he should have left this year. But I agree with you, I don't think he has a chance to make a team. I can see him getting drafted, but he would never play. If he is planning on going the Major Applewhite route and becoming a coach, then yes, coming back for his 6th year is a great idea. He gets to play the game that he loves with a chance to continue to do great things next year. I think the OU offense is losing like 2 starters? I am not looking forward to the RRS '04!

Staying can drastically improve his draft status, mostly because teams want to see he can stay healthy instead of just falling apart about once a year.

UTRA 12-23-2003 08:42 AM

He has no draft status, he's just like josh heupel. He's an average qb with amazing players all around him.

He's much better than average and someone would have picked him up - probably as a backup but I think he's much better than you are giving him credit for - compare his numbers - with anybodys! He was on an amazing team but he's partially responsible for it being amazing.

probably a backup's backup.

Woody182 12-24-2003 02:40 PM

The bottom line is...he will not be a first rounder either way, probably not a second rounder either. No matter what, he will need to prove himself in the NFL earn a roster spot, and earn playing time.
To me, it doesn't matter either way. He will need to prove himself Rex Grossman style to stick around in the NFL either way.

aswo 12-27-2003 05:26 PM

Jason white is going to end up like Ken Dorsey, the last pick in the draft. He go those numbers because OU's defense gave him the ball for 50 minutes a game.

djtestudo 12-27-2003 10:13 PM

So what? At least he'll do more then Eric Crouch ever did.

skysooner 12-29-2003 04:35 PM

BS about him being an average QB. He just had a better statistical year than the last 10 Heisman trophy winning QBs. This does not happen by accident and most of these QBs were on great teams as well. The big problem are his knees. No team is wanting to risk a draft pick on an injury risk. If he can go another year, he might get drafted. However I wouldn't be surprised to see him win another Heisman trophy and still get drafted 4th round or later.

cochise 12-29-2003 05:54 PM

I don't think White will ever be anything in college.
