WTF is NBC thinking? (about renewing the Notre Dame contract)

Quote:

EW YORK (AP) -- Notre Dame renewed its television contract with NBC on Thursday, agreeing to a five-year deal worth about $9 million a year.

The contract will help Notre Dame keep its independence in football. Athletic director Kevin White said last month that the school would ``monitor the landscape'' in terms of joining a conference, but Notre Dame has always valued being an independent.

The deal, worth about the same as the previous contract, gives NBC exclusive rights to Notre Dame football home games through 2010. NBC has broadcast Irish games since 1991.

``The ability to have our home football games telecast on a national basis becomes a tremendous vehicle for us in maintaining a national visibility and platform in terms of our football program's profile and recruiting,'' White said in a statement.

Notre Dame went 5-7 this season, contributing to just a 2.4 rating per game on NBC -- tied with 2001 for the lowest in its 13 years on the network.
It's for certain now. There is somebody high up in NBC that loves notre dame. I cant see any other reason why they would pay to broadcast this BS. Ratings are not going up next year as there are deeper depths for the program to sink into.

They're not even getting a bowl this year for god's sakes and NBC wants to extend the contract?

No
Body
Cares!

NBC has become a non-participant in college football - makes you wonder what a network is thinking when they tie themeselves to a single team - any team!!! You can understand when it is a station that owns a pro-team but this is a no brainer.

NBC needs this deal because 1) Notre Dame will ALWAYS draw an audiance nationally, and 2) they only have this, some crappy golf tournaments and a half-year of NASCAR left in the dying embers of NBC Sports. Probably won't even win the next Olympic TV deal.

Since Fox outbid them for their NFL rights in '93 they've been on a steady downturn.

Well said.

like djtestudo said, no matter how bad the Irish play they will still be the most popular team in the nation.

NBC doesn't have a sports program at all and Notre Dame has a huge following - so it's all about the $$$

That's what I was going to say. Notre Dame has a huge nationwide following. NBC is going after that money....

Where is Notre Dame's naitonal following? I don't know any one who follows them religiously. I know some fair weather Notre Dame fans but Notre Dame's spot at the top of the college football landscape ended ten years ago. They are just another team, with a very rich history.

Well then you don't know very many people. I live in Virginia and know at least 5 people who follow NDame religiously, and that's only out of maybe 100 people?

They may be popular in some areas but I don't think they've been the most popular team in the nation for quite sometime. Quite a long time actually!!!

May I ask who would be then?

Ain't Oklahoma...

Texas...

Alabama...

USC...

Ohio State...

Michigan...

It's still Notre Dame, because of the fact they ARE on national TV every week, and 30 million people want to remember the "olden days" when Notre Dame won championship after championship, gas was $.25 a gallon and you had to walk ten miles through the snow in the heat of July just to watch the TV.

streak_56 12-20-2003 09:25 PM

Notre Dame is the most popular team Nationally. Coming from an OSU fan its hard to say. I think Miami is up there too. But I don't know anyone who likes to watch Notre Dame. But here in Ohio you are either a Buckeye fan or a Michigan fan.

aswo 12-27-2003 05:22 PM

Yes sadly the scum that are Notre Dame do still get a very large national following, especially last year when they were like 10-1 and then smashed by USC they still had fans.

djtestudo 12-27-2003 10:08 PM

Well, when you already have a national following, and then go 10-1, you would expect to have a few fans...

the irish are big in the mid west

Jeff 12-28-2003 06:04 PM

Are they? I live in Iowa and don't notice a big presence. Mostly Hawkeye fans, as it should be.

ReggErving 12-28-2003 08:15 PM

It's easy, people watch Notre Dame which results in money from advertisers. Just because you might not like Notre Dame or might be envious that you can be a fan a watch them anywhere in the country, it's a business decision. There isn't a team in the country that has the fan base of Notre Dame.

I could have sworn there were a few Husker fans sprinkled in the Mid-west, but I have been known to be wrong...putting money on OU to beat KS.
