Class Act Coach Cheeks
know this might put me out there, but I thought what he did friday for that little girl was the best moment of the playoffs thus far.
If you didn't see it, a 13 year old girl started singing the national anthem and then, about halfway in, she went blank. She kind of gazed around with that same incredulous expression that the Trailblazerz have when they'rer high. Then Mr. Cheeks came strolling into the picture. He put his right arm around the girl and started singing, loudly, while using his right arm to alternately motion for the crowd to join in and to kind of punctuate certain words and phrases, like it was American Idol. What really made it cool was that Cheeks apparently sings about as well as Carl Lewis, but he kept blasting away. As they brought it home, singing "...and the home of the brave!" the girl leaned into Cheeks and said, gratefully, "Thank you!" Cheeks hugged her quickly and then turned and walked back to bench, cool as hell, as though the whole thing was planned and he was just doing his part. |
Yeah, I saw them talk about this on TNT last night. You gotta feel sorry for Cheeks, stuck with a bunch of losers like that. He always was a class act.
|
I saw that, and it was really cool of him to do. Too bad the poor guy is stuck with the Jailblazers.
|
Mo Cheeks, an old school 76er, back in the day of Dr. J. Good to see him get some national attention.
|
I read that when I first signed on to AOL. Now that's what a role model does... not like some of his players...
|
any video of this?

here is a link to a video showing what Cheeks did |
Gotta say, great act. All the stuff that must have been going through his head about winning the game, etc.
I especially like the comment by Tony Kornheiser on PTI (for those of you not in ESPN market- sports tv talk show). He commented (paraphrasing slightly), "you know noone else from the Blazers could have done it cause they were too doped up" |
Yeah always like Mo. Is a better man than player and that is saying a lot.

Class act all the way!
|
Mo Cheeks is truly a class act. I was an intern with the Quad City Thunder in the CBA when he got his first coaching job there and he was really cool to me whenever I had to deal with him.
|
Class usually finds a deserving level. Hopefully he'll have a chance with a different organization at some point. I grew up as a 76ers fan with the team of Cheeks, Dr. J, Andrew Toney, Dawkins and the rest. Mo always was a class guy.
He doesn't deserve the team he has. |
Mo has always been a great player and person. Wish his team had more of his character. Loved him as a 76er player and coach.
|
that was a great moment
|
G_Pac thanks , I'm glad I saw that.
|
Coach Cheeks definetly rocks, we love him here in P-Town even if we don't quite feel the same for many of the players.

yeah that was pretty nice

I remember his little stint with the Knicks. It's too bad he's stuck with the Portland Jailblazers. He deserves a better group of athletes to work with.

He is too good a man to be stuck with the knuckleheads on his team.
Hopefully he can follow Larry Brown as the Sixers Head Coach one day. |
very classy
