Tragic day for football world-wide

Yesterday Marc-Vivien Foé, of Cameroon, died playing in the Confederations Cup against Columbia. He collapsed in the 72nd minute, in the middle of the field. Paramedics tried their best, but 45mins later he died in the changing room. Probable cause of death being a heart attack. He was 28 years old!

Just saw it on the news. Very sad. I don't think I'll forget the images very soon... his eyes were so white, I hope this wasn't due to any medication or forbidden products... in any event, he joins Tom Simpson and all those others who gave their lives for their sport and profession.

omg! that's so sad.

this happens everywhere, even in the multi-million dollar funded nfl.

it's extremely painful to me to see one of the players from low-funded teams/countries die

Crazy

He apparently said something to the rest of the team at halftime like, 'Let's win this game or die on the field trying'.

Pretty crazy.

That's really sad. How do you get a heart attack when your 28 and in shape? It would be pretty hard to play on Cameroon right now.

Initially there were several reports that FIFA's demanding schedule (not enough off dates) might be to play for Foe's death. Has there been any follow-up reports to either support or contradict these accusations?

At what point is a team or a league (or some governing body) become responsible for the deaths of the athletes? Is FIFA potentially liable?

If I recall right, the weather wasn't too hot (mid to low 90's), and this fellow came from Cameroon, which is a warm place. It wasn't overly humid. Playing several games in a week should have been exhausting, but not deadly.

Now for American football, you have the death of Korey Stringer. This was in significantly hotter weather, and he was weighing over 300 pounds. For baseball, the fellow died was using endophrin(sp?).

While I am by no means a medical genius, I would at least hazard a guess that this Cameroon player was using some sort of drugs, or had a pre-existing medical problem.

I think the news said a suspected heart attack.
Also not necassarily drug involved m8. this may just be a tragedy. When your times up, it is up. I know of a lad in the forces who was 21 dropped down dead.

I almost shed a tear on this one. Fucking sad it is, more so because the guy had so much left for him.

Sometimes, I wonder about God. If he really is up there, then he ain't much better than Satan.

the_dude, these guys are all multi-millionaires.

Every Cameroon national player plays football in Europe - the late Mr Foe played in France and in England!

It just goes to show that tragedy can strike anyone.

It was devastating to watch - very sad.
