SHIIIIITTTTTT!!!! You can have that damn ASSHOLE! Bill Self is such a punk. How do walk out on a University after recruiting it's best class of incoming freshman ever.
Okay. Now that I got that out of my system. SHHHIIITTTTTT! What an ASSHOLE!!! Sorry. I really can't blame him. If he doesn't want to be at Illinois, then we don't want him. I can understand him wanting to go back to the Big 8 (Big 12 now) that he came from. I just hope that Illinois can bring in someone else decent to take over this VERY talented young team. I am glad that Self is at least "leaving the shelves stocked" in Champaign. |

I think its an awful move for Self and I just don't get it.
Its not like he made a major jump up. This is not going from the University of Buffalo to Duke. Self will be the guy who follows Williams, and who wants to be that guy. He was well-liked in Illinois and was paid well and would have been paid better. Kansas is getting a great coach. Guess I just don't see the appeal to Self. Its not money, fame, or any more of a chance to win it all. |

I think he made a mistake. Illinois b-ball has been pretty good lately and there's lots of great prep stars to choose from in the area. Kansas is Kansas, but will players decide to go there now that Roy W is gone?

heard that some players are going to leave, (remember reading something before that langford saying he'd leave if williams left)
anyway, that'd suck for one. and remember, self started his coaching career @ kansas! kinda like williams returning to his alma matter.

Well I think KU got a good coach, on the same vein I am sorry to see that Self went because now it makes it difficult to see that he will come down to Oklahoma State after Eddie Sutton leaves. Go Big XII in any case.

Langford and all the other players have said they are going to stay. All those quotes everyone read about the players being real pissed off were from right after Roy told them and then subsequently left right away to fly to NC. I'm sure they still aren't real happy, but they aren't as mad as they first were.
Self's step up to KU isn't a HUGE leap, but it is a jump to a top 4 or 5 basketball program. UNC, Kentucky, KU, Duke, and ... well thats pretty much it for the top tier college basketball programs. |

Self could be a good fit at Kansas.
I hope those fans who criticized Roy Williams' loyalty are happy with a coach who jumped programs yet again leaving behind recruits. I see nothing wrong with coaches moving on. How many people do you know who work at the same place for 40 years? The fans who blasted Williams for accepting a job which benefitted himself and his family need to be open to the idea that in current sports, this thing happens. Self will succeed with the Jayhawks, but let's not be hypercritical of someone for leaving behind recruits--only when they're your recruits. It happens. It's unfortunate and those incoming freshman should be allowed to transfer when it happens....but it's just a part of the game today.

As a lifelong KU fan, I'm happy with where it's going. It is kind of hard to accept a coach that is basically doing the same thing that the coach that left did but I say do what makes you happy. F everybody else. Accepting Self does mean you have to go easier on Williams. We'll bounce back. KU has a top notch basketball program. They don't get the respect they deserve, of course, losing big games doesn't help any.

It amuses me (and scares me just a little) to see how much drama the coaching changes cause. 3 Years ago, Roy was a traitor and a horrible person in Chapel Hill because he turned the Heels down. Now he's a saviour because he actually said yes.
In Kansas he was a dynastic wondercoach until he left, then he "never won the big one," his kids shot free throws poorly, he wasn't a good X's and O's man, etc. Not to mention being a traitor and horrible person. The great KU program is glad to be rid of a person who doesn't value loyalty, etc. Now KU is hiring a guy who according to the Illini fans "doesn't value loyalty" etc. and on down it goes. It was fascinating to watch the rumor mongering at insidecarolina.com, phog.net, and illiniboard.com. The bloviating and hyperventillating was tremendous on all sides. Suffice it to say, perspective was a little hard to find. All-in-all, these guys all left for better jobs and more money... it's hard to fault them for it. |

Smarm,
You accurately summarized the hypocrisy of sports. It's so easy to be bitter when you're on the losing end of the coaching carousel, but as soon as it benefits you, those values and opinions quickly go out the window.

It's obviously been a dream of his to coach there and I'm happy he was able to fulfill that dream. He didn't make a rash decision--either 3 years ago when he decided to stay, or now when he decided to leave--and I hope the Kansas fans can now focus on the future instead of dwelling in the past. |
