A great documentary about Johnny Owens, the Matchstick Man
Found this on youtube
If you have 40 minutes, this is a very moving and very good documentary on Johnny Owens, a Welsh bantamweight who tragically died in the ring after being knocked out by Lupe Pintor. Its about fathers and sons, and his fathers struggle to come to terms with what happened, but the class and dignity he shows - refusing to even for one second attach any blame or hostility to Pintor - is incredible. In the end, somehow both Pintor and the father seem to gain some peace. (as a warning, part 2 does show the blows which ultimately took Owens' life) Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - |
What a barbaric 'sport' where a man is punched to death inside the ring. Nothing but thugs and hooligans these men are, utterly disgraceful.

all combat sports have an element of risk.
the interesting thing about this documentary is the contrast between the two men. Boxing took the life of Johnny Owens It saved the life of Lupe Pintor. |
