Side effects of the pill?

What are they? I'm mostly interested with what women have to say about it that are on it, but anyone with useful stuff can help. My girlfriend says she doesn't want to go on it because it does stuff like cause irregular periods and such besides the fact that it's prescribed. As seinfeld would say... what's the deal with the pill??

It actually makes your period almost 100% regular..when you get to those sugar pills..your period is on. The major drawbacks are weight gain(actually increased appetite) and loss of sex drive. The last one is a kicker, probably under normal situations it won't come up much but it's a step in the "No sex" direction. My gf has been under a huge amount of sex plus on the pill so we have sex like 1-2 times a week and that is a lot.

Have her go into a doctor and talk to them, but honestly MILLIONS of women are on the pill and they are OK.

Well, if your gf becomes stressed the pill only makes the loss of sex drive even more apparent.

Side effects vary a whole lot from person to person, particularly the with the different kinds of pills that exist. There are some bad side effects, like breakthru bleeding, and some smokers will have heart difficulties, but most side effects stop within the first couple months.

Let your girlfriend know about the good side effects:
-periods become shorter, milder (less bleeding), with less cramping
-reduced risk of ovarian cysts
-reduced risk of breast cysts
-reduced risk of pelvic inflammatory disease
-reduced risk of endometrial cancer
-reduced risk of ovarian cancer

In my own experience, my periods became awesomely predictable, down to the day. I didn' t have any weight gain, or any problems.

Another thing to consider is the fact that some girls opt to get rid of their periods alltogether with the help of the pill. Basically, rather than take the green sugar pills that allow your period to happen, you just throw them away and start the next pack. This doesn't work for everyone, like me. Instead, it made me bleed for a month solid. That sucked. But it really works for some people. It is a little more expensive, since you're using more pills, but the extra pill cost is probably eliminated by no more tampon/pad cost.

If she's interested, encourage her to go to planned parenthood, or if she's in college, the college health clinic. In both cases, you can get the pill for free or ridiculously cheap. The only thing they require is a free pelvic exam, which is good to do anyway.

ok, another side effect of the pill that i´ve encountered (with my ex) was bouts of unpredictible behaviour.

now, i´m not 100% on the facts here, since she didn´t share all of the details. so pick me up if this was possibly due to something else.

i believe she was getting a inappropriate dose, and was thus having mood swings due to hormonal inbalance. once she stopped taking the pill, she levelled out, and these bouts ceased.

I have to agree with this, my ex was on the pill and I noticed a major change in her behaviour - she was irritable unreasonable etc - not the woman that I had started going out with.

Now don't get me wrong I stongly advocate safe sex but I would suggest that you use a condom rather than your gf going on the pill.

Sure the pill is used by many millions of women world wide but if it affects the way your gf acts then you suffer - keep it natural - just stop your little swimmers getting to her in the first place rather than stopping her from producing her own eggs by chemical means.

Thanks for the input guys. My girlfriend used to complain about being too skinny and she hates her long periods. I really apreciate the info. We'll have to talk about it. I don't want to start a new topic, do you think a condom or the pill is the better birth control method *note I'm talking about pregnancy rates, not feeling or otherwise* I know they're both about the same percentage but I think the condom doesn't work that 3% of the time because that's the percentage that people use it wrong and such. Is it the same for the pill? (hope all that is clear)

The percentages listed on the packages are with CORRECT usage. If you read all the fine print on the little inserts you'll find it. The percentage is higher for the pill.

Personally I have had some problems with it not being strong enough to hold off my periods. Finally the doc put me on a stronger one that I also took for 2 months at a time. Yes it did decrease my sex drive temporarily but with time and patience on hubby's part I'm hornier than ever since I don't have to deal with a period half as much and I don't have the worry nagging at me that I could get pregnant. I didn't have trouble with gaining weight. I did start out with the Progesterone only Pills POPs and liked them better but once I'd begun to wean my child I started to have trouble with regularity so went to the ones with Estrogen as well to control things. It's worth it to look into and the least invasive/permanant method. The shot has cause problems for everyone I know who has had it. The Pill is the easiest to regulate.

The pill is by far the higher percentage. I'll see if I can find something to back that up, but like raeanna74 says, proper usage is key. Putting on a condom and the condom performing properly in conditions such as weird positions, suction, objects, wrong lube, and nonoxyl-9 (which breaks down latex, by the way) are not nearly as clear cut as popping a pill. Mind you, some girls are not nearly responsible enought to remember to take one the same time every day and then I would recommend condoms.

A lot of people don't put condoms on properly - ie pinching the tip to leave a reservoir, etc. And then condoms are easily broken, etc, so I recommend the pill.
