How many of you have had a heated argument with a family member over elections?
Don't bother telling me conservative or liberal, Kerry or Bush, right or left.
I'm not interested. Just curious how many of you have gotten into a heated debate with a family member over this election, or political views in general... I had to cut off contact with my Grandma until after election- because I was discussing issues with her and she retorted- we'll im awful sorry young people can vote if they all believe that... so I responded Young people are defending our country, not sitting on their asses like you believing everything they read in TIME magazine . Seriously though I've had problems with her in the past- shes not the nicest person, shes kind of lazy, she makes no effort to connect with her grandchildren, me atleast, being the only male ... But honestly everything was okay - no yelling just a dicussion of what happened in the debates and I said " Well i think people that are for Bush see it as a a Bush win and people for Kerry see it for a kerry win and people undecided saw the Cardnials kick ass" then we went to talk about who we were going to vote for, and why- and then it just came out of the blue and I was like WTF ?? Civil conversation goes to hell in a handbasket - and I didnt insult her canidate or anything.... I didn't smear or say half truthes, Anyway just curious how many of us poltically err involved people this occured too? |
There are good reasons not to discuss politics or religion at the dinner table as I found out one Thanksgiving.
I ended up walking away to keep the peace as well as my sanity. |
My dad and I love to challenge each other's political ideas, although we occasionally piss each other off. I do try to stay away from the topics while dining with the in-laws, though.

I recently had a political conversation with my father that was not really heated...just lots of disagreements. Of course it's always been I say black he says white kind of thing with us. Hmm, I may secretly enjoy those 'debates' with him :)

She brought it up tho :(
Im insulted that she thinks she knows more/better because shes older.... Thats what ticks me off more than anything else cause in the end- ill cancel her vote out  |
As the saying goes "politics and religion". My brother and I recently got into it over the presidential election and religion. I got fairly ugly for a while, but in the end we worked it out. He called me later to say that once he calmed down he really thought about what I was saying, and has changed his mind about the election thought definitely not about the religious part of the conversation. I usually preface these kinds of conversations with something like, "You know I have very stong opinions on this, but I really love to hear and learn about and from people who don't see things the way I do. " I also try to keep it from getting too heated by dropping the "I guess we can just agree to disagree and move on".

Family, not in several years(work is another story). There was a debate one Christmas among the whole extended family which got heavy, and after that there was common agreement to not allow ourselves to get into it. Also I once debated my whole family on the death penalty, as I'm the only one who's for it.
As for condecension from the old, to be fair, they are generally do know MORE than the young, but better is not always the case. I think the best way to show them up is just to bury them. |
I have with my dad. After convincing him of every point, he cited lies from a 527 group as the one thing he can't get past in to changing his vote. Stupidity.

Although she is now passed on, my grandmother and I had seriously heated politcal discussions. She was a depression era democrate who believed that FDR hung the moon. She and my grandfather voted straight Democrate every election of their lives because it was the party of FDR. When she found out I had supported and voted for Reagan, she like to have near disowned me. We got into a shouting match at the lunch table (and my grandmother did not shout, it was not lady like) and had to seperated by my dad and grandfather. Politics was not welcome topic of conversation in her home for me ever again even though I was majoring in Poltical Science in college.
