The Lessons of History
I dedicate the following article to those who are characerizing the War to liberate Iraq as being one of imperialistic profiteering.

I've read this comparison before - there's a few major points to note: Iraq was never part of the United States, Lincoln didn't go to war because was an abolitionist, we're squandering the concept of dignity with the prisoner abuse scandal and the use of contractors that we hired through the Dept. of Interior, as much as we talk about liberation many places are still without running water and electricity in Iraq, the explosion of violence in Falluja started right after Paul Bremer shut down an Iraqi-ran newspaper. I could go on and on... I think there is just as compelling of an argument that Bush is as incompetent as Andrew Johnson and his inability to successfully rebuild and reunite the country equitably after a decisive military victory.

I'm sorry
but the civil war is nothing like the war in iraq... absolutely nothing like it. not even close and lincoln really didn't care about freeing the slaves. "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume V, "Letter to Horace Greeley" (August 22, 1862), p. 388. I am beginning to see more people arguing that bush is akin to johnson with the horrible struggle to rebuild after a war... |
Comparing this to the Civil War is pretty silly as others have already mentioned.

lincoln didn't care about freeing the slaves...well, everybody says bush doesn't really care about freeing the iraqis, so there's a similarity right there :).
|
Doh....good point, yatzr

i agree totally - we should stop the occupation of the Confederate States ;)
interesting, but not a parallel so much as divergent i think |
