I really thought this was over last night and I didn't check back until now. I'll give you the fact that my statement was "abrasive", but the simple fact here is the root of this man's hatred is religion. That's all my point is. There isn't a single person here who can say that his hate doesn't come from religion. If you think I'm wrong then you need to go look at the GodHatesFags website. That is pure hate, and in his mind, and many others, his god hates gay men and his bible says they should be killed.

Dude, his hatred for gays id not based upon religion. AS previoulsy stated, he hates gays begause he is the most self-hating closet-gay of all times.

Religion by itself is not bad or hateful. It's only when nuts like this Phelps character start distorting it and overlooking its basic premise that problems arise. Even if Phelps wasn't religious, he'd make up some other rationale for his irrational hatred.

I've spent the better part of the afternoon researching Fred Phelps, his history, his family and Westboro Baptist "Church" and religion isn't the cause, it's the excuse.

I agree with that, but you or anyone else can't tell me that he doesn't use religion to spread his hate. And like it or not. The bible absolutely does say that being a gay man is an abomination punishable by death. Now tell me that's teaching love......

From what I read, his father was a strict and somewhat harsh man, but no more than many fathers.

Relatives of Phelps back in Missourri don't understand exactly what has caused Fred to go off the deep end, but his two oldest sons recount that there father always had anger and hatred and now that his children are adults, Fred has switched from beating them to hating gays.

My own opinion so far is that there is real evil in the world, and Fred Phelps is one manifestation of it.

And I think you are right, Phelps uses religion to spread his hate, the same way some mean use women for sex and use children for profit.

Consider that local Topeka religious leaders regularly denounce Phelps or that Fred regularly attacks other churches and their members.

The Bible is a collection of writings of all sorts. One paragraph is hardly represenative of the entire work.

i half-heartedly agree with you. most religions in and of themselves are do not = hate. it's when you get asshats in charge who get their first taste of power and love it. and then they corrupt it. christianity has pretty much been corrupt for about 1500 or so years now. doesn't take long for many religions to get that way. but at their hearts, most religions aren't the problem.

i think if you look at the history of wars, you'll actually find that most are from religion. before the last few hundred years, religion played a large role in pretty much every aspect of life. religion has been used as a banner under which many armies have fought. and today, they still do. religion was a reason for WWII. don't beleive me? well, hitler tried to exterminate the jews (that's a religous reason, he hated people of that religion) and other people whom he considered inferior. the crusades, the inquisition, the salem witch trials (not a war, but another religion run amuk kind of thing), the current arab vs. isreal, shit with the klan. think about all of the papal sponsored or supported wars throughout the history of christianity. there have been quite a few.

I think that in response to this kind of atrocity, what we have to do is stop pointing fingers as much and do wht we can to ensure that the children of the people who support this kind of thing are educated to be tolerant and are still able to maintain healthy religious beliefs.

I stand by what i said, over two hundred wars were NOT caused by religion. PLease provide a list of religious wars and you will see that the vast majority of wars WERE not wars of religion.

Yes religion has messed up. but it wasnt meant to be evil (coming from an agnostic it means something) but its used as leverage to do bad things in the name of good.

Here is the most important question: Don't these people have jobs?

I mean, how do they have so much time to go around and hate? Shouldn't they be helping their kids, taking care of the poor or something else that Jesus actually espoused?
