Pics from the Grand Canyon (B&W)

Just some pics I snapped on my Pentax this summer. Thought they came out alright.

My personal favorites are the ones with the trees. You'll see which ones I mean. They all have some trees but these two have the tree as the focal point.

Tell me what you think, KTHX.

Cool pics, but I'd like to see the color versions, too.

They don't exist. All my color (digital) shots on this trip were taken in Sedona, AZ and Las Vegas.

actually due to the slight haze in the air you couldnt really capture the color of everything so well. the black and white kind of cut through the haze and salvaged some contrast.

with the proper light/cleanliness of air those pics could have been stunning in color, i bet.

Great pictures. Amazing how it looks like another planet in some of them.

I think the shots are great. I really like the b&w too. That is some beautiful scenery. I hope to make it out there some day in the near future.

Great pics! What are the technical specs, if you don't mind my asking. Do you use a filter? I'm wondering how those pics would have come out with a UV or polarizing filter applied.

i had them set at 100x speed, i dont really remember why. maybe because i'm clumsy and cant hold still for a while.

I dont remember the rest of the specs but i think that a 3 1/2 filter was used developing. not sure though because unfortunately i didnt do them myself (usually do but didnt have the time in this particular situation).

These are just stunning, thanks. I'll never forget our trip to the Grand Canyon a couple years ago. What immediately hits you is the immensity and the color, but with your black-and-whites, you make a strong case for the primacy of the raw beauty of its topography. Thanks for exposing it.

I like the trees ones as well. Looks to me like they didn't leave the shots in the developer long enough. If you yank them too soon you don't get clean whites and black blacks.

actually, that's thanks to the poor quality scan. the actual prints look much sharper.

I assume those were all taken along the South Rim, correct? I can see Indian Gardens in a couple of the shots so I know at least some of them were. Where along the rim did you find that wonderfull withered old tree. I've walked most of the area near the visitors center on the South Rim and never come across that. I do know of a similar tree on the North Rim not far from the parking lot but it's not quite so twisted =)

Yes, all the south rim. I think, IIRC, the tree was near the Abyss. I could be wrong on that one though.

Those pics are awesome, K. I like the B&W, adds to the vastness of it all.
