photos Trying the Strobist Thang

A friend of mine was kind enough to invite me over and introduce me to shooting with multiple strobes. Before I knew it, three hours had rushed by. So much to learn.

Don't know what strobist is but I do like the second shot.

Ain't it addictive? Soon enough you'll be stalking restauraunts for black straws and saving every cereal box you can find.

These look great. What was your set-up?

Hmmm... let's see... all shot using Nikon CLS. One SB-800 through a soft box up high at a 45-degree angle and a second SB-800 down low in front through a translucent reflector.

Camera is a Nikon D300. Lens is a 50mm f/1.8.

Strobist

The term appears to encompass a wide range. As near as I can figure, if you use a strobe flash, you're doing the "strobist thang".

I've been using them for light painting. I posted one in the graffiti thread.

Yes, I figured. Jelled lights, right? I've only been playing with homemade snoots and gobos - I haven't gone too far into it all but I'm a big fan of the DYI aspect of it.

To my limited knowledge, it doesn't seem that you can get away with not using gels, especially if you're working indoors. Fluorescent lights are green and incandescent are orange, so you have to match those with the flash before you can balance all of them out.

Yeah, I know you're supposed to color correct the lights with gels but it's rarely ever that I'm shooting under mixed light and when I am, I just dial it down and overpower it with the strobes. And if worst comes to worst, I go grayscale.

I've posted this before but it's one of my better attempts at going strobist. Snooted sb-600 fired above the camera in CLS. Fully manual settings that totally escape my memory.

Oh, and I believe Jehu's shot in the graffiti thread is an example of gels used for creative purposes rather than color correction.

Nice shot.

I spent a few hours shooting today. Here's one:

Not much of a strobe here. I double checked the EXIF. It's there, but apparently it didn't fire.
