New Camera & Compatibility Questions
Hello All,
Just received a Nikon D40x for the holiday's and love it. But I have a number of questions as reasonable newcomer to the SLR party you have all been having for a few years now. The digital landscape has changed and so much for the better. How do I know what lenses are compatable with this camera, versus the d80 and so forth? I understand that the autofocus mechanism (in the D40x's case) is internal to the lens vs. the camera body. More specifically I am looking at getting the Tamron AF/IF 20-40MM F/2.7-3.5 Aspherical, and would like to see if it will play nicely with my new toy. Are there references out there that key you in on things like this, if so where? Thank you in advance, Andy |

Hopefully one of our resident nikon nerds can help you out with this. Paddyjoe, perhaps?
As far as I know for Nikon compatibility, lenses that work with the D80 should also work with the D40x. It's like Canon. Lenses that work on the 20D, 30D, 40D will also work on the Rebel Xti. You also realize that you now have to start sharing your work with us, right? |

Well ok from what I understand, that Tamron should work fine because of the IF (internal focusing). the D-40x will only autofocus with AF-S or AF-I lenses due to the lack of focusing mechanism in the body. |
Thanks PaddyJoe et. al.,
You confirmed what I believed to be true. This is exactly what I was looking for and what I needed to know. Cheers, Andy ...and JumpinJesus, here's the first of the pictures I've taken in the <2 days of owning the camera. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2340/...46124a241a.jpg |

Oh... and Ken Rockwell gives a good run down on the performance of the D40 including lens limitations. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40...nce.htm#lenses |
