would you find immortal omnipotent omnipresence boring?
I keep thinking about it, and all I can think is I'd watch the big bang a couple of times, I'd have an orgasm that lasted an eon, I'd eat a lot of pizza, and then I would just be horrendously bored...


now, think about it and answer honestly, I'm going somewhere with this :lol:

You wouldn't have to do anything,cause you'd already know how it felt....and feel it.

If you're omnipotent you could always find (create) something interesting to do.

You could even create a little dimension of surprise so the omniscient thing didn't get in the way of fun.

I'd watch every sunset & sunrise, drive in F1, give everybody a Groundhog Day to fix their mistakes, visit other planets, eat more cheese, and talk to my neighbors more.

From my sphere of surprise, an infinite number of times.

Also, unless I lose the human sense of wonderment I don't think sunrises, sunsets, etc., would become boring.

This comes down the the rules of your game. Do they allow for the all powerful to create a temporary void of awareness? It's a circular problem. You have to decide ahead of time or we'll cheat.

Since I'm all knowing, I'd create some temporary unknowns for my amusement. Then I'd tweak the physical parameters just a bit and start big bangs and the resulting galaxies, stars, etc.. and watch the various forms of life develop and evolve to the point where they almost go crazy trying to figure out what it's all about and speculate on what it would be like to be immortal. Or not.

I would just impose a a part of my being into every living thing, so I'm constantly with feeling, with emotion. That way the sensation of amazement would rise and fall as life experiences it, leaving me totally unsatisfied, yet getting the satisfaction I was searching.

Lets say the life I invoked was Humans, the rush of feelings from every single person on the planet would run through me. Being omipotent I can experience them all as I please.

Atfirst I thought you wrote "immoral omnipotent omnipresence"... I grinned and was thinking "score I can be an evil god"... oh well.

how does omnipotence sit with the concept of free-will? being all powerfull and creating life that does unexpected things might be one way to relieve the boredom.

I see that sort of existence as stultifying for a conscious being.

If a conscious being had that status I think she/he would quickly choose to become limited and mortal - for reasons that seem quite obvious...

It depends on your definition of omni-whatever - if god created the garden of eden only to be frustrated by Adam and Eve's disregard of his commandments, it suggests he didn't know what they were going to do - so in the bible's interpretation at least, the almighty doesn't have:
a) 20/20 foresight
b) the ability (or perhaps the desire) to control our minds
c) Omnipotence/Omnicience

If he knows everything that was, and is and will be, then there can't be such a thing as free-will, (which is arguable anyway) everything we do has already been done as far as he's concerned.

Some people's conception of God is that of a 'mere' creator, who set things in motion, and continues to be surprised by events. A truely omniscient being (one who knows everything past/present and future) with omnipotence must, by definition, be able to limit his powers in a way that can't be reversed. If he's capable of that, and has an eternity of existance, it can only be a matter of time before he tries it out.

If you had an eternity to express your powers, does that mean you'd use all your powers at least once - even the ones that were permanently limiting?

Well, if I was omniscient, I would know everything, even stuff that would happen in a little pocket of "suprise", otherwise, I would not know something, and therefore would not be omniscient. Then there comes the fact that I could never do anything new or unexpected, because as I said before, I would know everything, therefore I can only do that which I already know I will do, and therefore already know what it feels like to do it, I cannot change what I will do because I already know I'm gonna do it and if I change I will not have been omniscient, so if I'm omniscient I can't change anything.

So basically I would destroy myself about an instant after I came into being, because I would already know everything that was ever going to happen and what it would feel like to experience, every one of an infinite number of experiences would already be in my mind, so everything would be boring and pointless, plus I would already know when I was going destroy myself from the knowledge of everything and I would even know what it felt like to be destroyed and what it felt like after being destroyed, so even that would be extremely boring.

You would always be. You would always know. "I am." is the name God gave himself, and for good reason. Only when one positions oneself in time does one have any inclination of boredom, or a sense of not-being. A creature that is so time-dependant as human beings can NOT understand what it means to be everywhere and everything and everytime. Pondering this existance is pointless because it will never be understood.

Let's think logically about this. If I was omniscient, I could say 'LET ME BE IN AN ETERNAL STATE OF INFINITE RAPTURE (AND NEVER GET BORED OF IT)' and it would be so. So, no, I wouldn't ever find it boring. Unless I wanted to.

Geez, if I really got that bored I could always smell myself. There'd be plenty of me to smell.

well the point of this thread was to question that if god was allseeing knowing powerful, whatever, that he would get bored and create us simply for his amusement...

at least thats what I was thinking the other day *shrug*

Boredom is a human experience. Thus to aliviate it you would not need to constantly create things which amuse you but instead turn off the part of your brain which makes you feel bored.

Exactly. If you want to understand the concept of God, it's important not to personify too much. We do things and create things because we have needs and the things we do are a means of fulfilling these needs. An omnipotent being would have no needs and would certainly not require any means by which to fulfil them. The whole exercise of making anything would be utterly futile.

We can only conclude, then, that if we were created by a God, this God was either irrational or not omnipotent.

If I'm omnipotent then can't I just will myself to not be bored?

But also lets think of this a different way. Assuming I somehow became immortal, omnipotent, omniscient, all-knowing, etc. and still retained my personality (and human emotions like boredom) then I doubt that I would ever get bored because I would have access to infinity. I could read every book, play every game, sample every experience that there ever was or even might ever have been. If I chose I could experience it all in a flash or draw it out over eternity. If I wanted to do something again I could and if it happened to lose its luster after the first time then I could unexperience it and do it again for the first time. Being all powerful has its advantages like that ;)

I think I could have some fun being an omnipotent being. Like many, I would make myself keep that which makes me human, all my emotions, experiences, etc ;) and not give into that "I know everything, its pointless" crap.
Then I would give everyone here in this thread just about all my powers including the ability to know all at once :thumbsup: ... EXCEPT the ability to predict what each of you other Modern Day Gods is going to do. I'd watch the mayhem unfurl and cut those powers out from you one random day like the cheap rug that I can treat them. Now doesn't this sound slighty more interesting to do with my time? :D

And who is to say that one omnipotent being is capable of knowing what the other being is doing? By all standards both are outside that bubble of creation that is bound to the original "god."
