Any tips/tricks for helping with the pain of teething? Both the pain for the kid and what a PITA it is for me? hah

Little man's got one tooth now and he seems to be in pretty constant pain at this point. Sometimes you can tell it's just annoying to him, other times it's screaming.

I've used teething tabs. He has a "meh" response to them. They used to work. I've used orajel, the baby kind and adult kind. He gets pissed because of the taste, but once his irritation wears off he chomps on everything he can. He's got one teether he likes, but it's one we have to hold in his mouth, so wave bye bye to getting ANYthing done if we rely on it. One night it was so bad that I did give him Tylenol, and that helped, but I don't want to rely on medication either.

Help! I can't stand having that little razorsharp tooth gnawing just on me all the time! :)

We're up to 5 teeth now, with the 6th one coming any day now. It gets better with each new one, although I hear that molars are a different story.

Orajel didn't do much for Max, although he does still get it from time to time. During the day, he's not too bad, but he's a real PITA at night about it. We usually give him a half dose of Tylenol at night if it looks like it's going to be bad. During the days, we sometimes give him frozen teethers, but he doesn't always like those. A lot of time, we just let him work on one toy for as long as he wants and that seems to help.

It gets better.

When you say teething tabs...do you mean the Hylands homeopathic kind? They never worked for me.

The only thing that really worked for me was the Tylenol...the orajel didn't seem to help much. Some people swear by wetting a washcloth and freezing it and then letting the baby chew on it. My sister uses this stuff called Kanka that is the only thing that helps her son...I think it's with the orajel. It's an adult medicine though, so you may be hesitant to use it.

As for the nursing...I weaned my son before he got his first tooth, so I don't have any suggestions for that!

Oh I haven't nursed in a while. Stress + new job = too much for my body. I stopped producing enough. He just chews on... me...

The tabs weren't Hylands I don't think, but yeah they were homeopathic. They worked the first time he started to teethe, then his tooth covered again, but now it's out in full force with the one next to it and I think one on each side too. Poor kid.

I'll try the washcloth thing. I'm hesitant to use adult medication - is it just like orajel though?

Wrapping an ice cube in a washcloth works pretty well.

You fill it with ice or frozen fruit.

Babygirl™ loved to chew on frozen bananas.

The other trick is the old fashioned whiskey trick. Just dip you finger in some whiskey and rub it on the little tyke's gums. Call me crazy, but it did work in extreme circumstances.:thumbsup:

hahaha I prefer to use the hard liquor for myself. :p ;)

I'm going to try baby carrots I think.

One trick my wife I did for our kids when there were teething. We have them Pedialite popsicles. The cold numbed their gums like the ice cube, it was easier to hold also.

Amanda starting cutting her teeth at two months, by her first birthday she had them all....I think that was the hardest part of having a baby lol.

With her I gave her childrens tylenol and let her chew on a warm washcloth, she wouldnt keep a cold one in her mouth, infact she NEVER liked having anything cold in her mouth. She would spit up everytime I tried orajel so wasnt an option.

I don't know about popsicles... I have a hard enough time getting the dogs to let him eat carrots in peace, I don't think I could keep a popsicle away! :p

He likes to chew on carrots and the other day I gave him a small piece of a biscuit and he seemed to enjoy it. Made a huge mess but it was cute. :)

half a banana on a popsicle stick - frozen. Works wonders, but may stain clothes. Also, previously mentioned...wet frozen washclothes, hard cookies, and baby tylenol.

We would give Childrens Motrin and Orajel. Sometimes we'd put Orajel on the passifier if he wouldn't let our fingers in his mouth and let his whole mouth get numb.. it was quite funny. Most of the time though a frozen teething ring would do the trick. Just don't let em hold it for too long and all that.

All of the teething rings I've seen now specifically say not to freeze them, but we do have this little polar bear teether. It's almost like a beanie baby, but his hands are these cool teethers that have a gel substance in them. This little dude can pretty much go anywhere. Freezer, fridge, I THINK he might be dishwasher safe but I'm not sure. He helps a lot. :D

He's not a huge fan of bananas, but I tried apples and those helped. Big mess, but he loved it. :)

An African friend of mine gave her daughter biltong (a tough sun-dried beef jerky) to chew on while teething, it is traditional to do so in Zimbabwe and her baby loved the stuff. Quite understandably too - it's delicious!

We're using Anbesol for my daughter and she quite likes the stuff, and we enjoy the faces she makes afterwards.

The toughest part has been the fevers, runny noses & ear infections. Infants motrin is great stuff! She didn't start teething until nearly a year old and at 14 months only has 6 in various stages.
