*Shudders*
I remember a few years ago I was skimming along my grandmas old radio dail and came across a weird female voice reading off numbers, but I dont remember if there was any pattern. Me and my grandma listened to the station for almost an hour and it just kept reading off the numbers...creeped me out then and now reading this just freaks the living SHIT out of me! |
Monotone Love Song
I'm an occasional shortwave listener and have come across these several times. I've been fascinated by them for the longest time and have copies of several from the Conet Project on Irdial.
My band, The Five Foot Flame, recorded a song I wrote that actually deals with these stations and a listener's obsession with the woman's voice. Interesting song. You should check it out. It's called Monotone Love Song. www.thefivefootflame.com Lyrics are as follows: Antenna's out the window Fingers on the dial And it's true, I've been waiting for you for a long while Head upon the table 'Sieben, vier, fünf, three' I'm not sure who this count is for Could it be for me? Are you calling out to me? Bulgarian Betty, what's your sign? 'Achtung, achtung', baby you're right on time Five 'til eleven, the metronome buzz Your monotone love song calling me through the fuzz Intention's out the window Hot breath on the dial And it's true, I've scanned the band for you for a long while Pulsed from secret towers You drift across the sea And I'm not sure who this code is for Could it be for me? Are you calling out to me? Bulgarian Betty, what's your sign? 'Achtung, achtung', baby you're right on time Five 'til eleven, the metronome buzz Your monotone love song calling me through the fuzz |
I first learned about this from Tim Powers book DECLARE. He is a great scifi/fantasy writer, and a lot of the beginning of the book is about a young spy recruited fom England to work with a Russian lady in France during WW2. He and she receive and translate the messages using one-time pads, and it mentions the trouble of bouncing a signal off the atmosphere to get it to travel so far. Tim Powers writes great fantasy based off of real events.

You know, I have to say that at first I thought, "How could this be creepy or unsettling? It's just a bunch of numbers being read." Then I listened, and for the record, it totally freaked me out. It's so surreal to listen to and consider why some of the stations are still broadcasting. When you let your mind runaway with this stuff it's real easy to get freaked out.

Pretty cool, never knew thse existed. Though, why are people freaked out about it? I'm not flaming anyone or anything, I am just curious. It just doesn't seem like a typical scary thing to me.

There is something really scarey about them. Makes me feel like I'm listening to something I'm not supposed to.

I think they're kinda creepy simply because of how they sound. These far away distant voices, in languages you may or may not understand, possibly just sent out to one person, who may or may not have gotten the message. I heard a few signals on one of the websites listed that I also thought might have been a data signal with a creepy tune over it. Who knows? That's probably the freakiest part about it. People from all over the world can hear it, but the lone reciepient may not have received the message in time...or its just crap to kick up the conspiracy minded folks and waste gov't resources. Either way, somewhere someone took the time to hide and set up some tranciever. I think it's the anonymity...

At night, turn off all the lights, turn up the volume, lsiten to that sound clip a few times, and you'll probably find it at least a little bit creepy. The first time I heard it, it was about 3 in the morning, and the volume was higher than I had expected. It was creepy as hell. Then again, I have an overactive imagination, so it could just be me. |
They are *strange.* Some poeple find them "creepy" but I don't think so. Although the one that has a child's voice reading off numbers is a bit on the creepy side.
As far as teh conspiracy bit goes, I think they're what they appear to be, methods of communication from governments to operatives. They do exist, you can listen to and track them, which apparently a lot of people do. They're interesting. It's just a peek into another world we haven't been included into. I listened to quite a few of these yesterday. I think the complexity in some of the numbers sequences is interesting too. The patterns alone show a lot of intelligence was behind them. Then you realize they've been tracked regularly broadcasting for multiple decades, accross several bands, in neat rotations. That's really quite an achievement. If someone was trying to tell me they're talking to aliens with them...well...I have my limits. Thanks for all the links though, kept me busy for an afternoon. |
maybe the number being read off are lotto numbers...
