Surgery

i am always constantly afraid that if I go for surgery that they might leave something in me
I heard that some guy got flesh eating virus from it and I was wondering if anyone else has the same fear.

They should inact a law, that whatever gets left in you after surgery you get to keep, there'd be a lot of pissed off people out there with rolex watches...

it doesnt seem to happen too often, when it does i think the media likes to tell everyone ..

but just like theres always someone who wins the lottery .. the same for something getting left inside ya.

there should be statistics somewhere if you look..

at least the surgery to remove it would be free.. and you could sue for lots of money .. (unless it were to cause health problems then you die .. not good)

Trust me, its far better to have something left inside you after the surgery, rather than something removed that should have been left alone.

If the doctors ever have to sew me back up, and realize they have spare parts lying around that they didn't have when they took me apart... well, lets just say they are in for a world of pain

I don't worry about that.... I just worry about getting opened up. That whole concept is really weird to me.

Getting something left in you is less likely than you winning the lottery I think. The flesh eating virus you speak of would be the flesh eating bacteria I think, which is also highly unlikely to be gotten in a surgical setting. The reason that hospitals seem to push people out so fast nowadays is because there aer large amounts of bacteria in the hospital, and the longer a person is in thre, the more likely they are to pick up an infection. The problem with bacteria in a hospital is it's likely from another infected patient who is being treated with antibiotics, and that bacteria may now be resistant to antibiotics, making it harder to treat. There are a few rare types of bacteria (more and more showing up every day baecause of people going to their docs witha cold of the flu and demanding antibiotics) that are almost totally resistant, and these are more common in a hospital, and can kill you. However, your chances are still pretty rare.

I absolutely NEVER plan on having surgery. Shit. I'm afraid of having a KID, and that doesn't necessarily require being sliced open. I'm terrified of hospitals, dislike doctors intensely, and I about piss myself when someone tells me about having IV's. Sooo, thinking about a doctor slicing into me and literally messing with my insides gives me the heebly-jeeblies. I'm all grossed out now just thinking about it! *shudders*

I had appendicitis (sp?) over the summer and had to have surgery. Up until then I had NEVER been to the hospital. Not one broken bone, major sickness, or anything. Anyway, I of course had to have surgery to get that removed. At first it didn't bother me that much because I was in so much pain and would have welcomed death, or a scalpel, whichever came first.
However, when the surgery got closer (they kept me in the hospital a good 4 hours waiting on the surgery), I was scared absoultely out of my mind. I was afraid they wouldn't get all of my appendix and I'd have to have surgery again. Don't ask why I was afraid of that, I have no idea. Must've been the drugs.

Overall the procedure wasn't that bad, I don't even remember the nurses putting me to sleep, and the thing that hurt the worst was taking out the catheder (holy CRAP that sucked).

Psycho

My biggest fear is waking up after surgery in the recovery room and realizing that my surgeon is missing! Then realizing that I have a funny feeling in my stomach, like somebody is trying to get out! I wake up from that dream just as the surgeon is looking for an alternate route (throug the back door)!

I have worked in the OR for over fifteen years and have been personally involved with over 50,000 procedures. In that entire time I have only seen two things left in patients. Both patients had sponges left in them during very hectic emergency procedures that involved many people. Both patients did well after another procedure that removed the foreign body. One sued, and the other said "thanks for saving my life" one more time.

I had surgery- they left thirteen screws and a titanium plate about a foot long- course it holds my arm together and all, but believe me, we are not on friendly terms- just isnt the same- and its amazing the subtle differences that you notice in big ways between before and after......
