Terrorist Fears

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/...oll/index.html

I had to put this in paranoia

SERIOUSLY!?

Quote:

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Wednesday, 35 percent of Americans believe a terrorist attack somewhere in the United States is likely over the next several weeks.
35%!?? NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS?

SERIOUSLY?

are there that many people lacking rational thought?

Quote:

According to the survey, 30 percent of Americans approve of how Bush is handling his job, while 68 percent disapprove of Bush's job performance. These numbers are roughly consistent with the president's approval ratings over most of the last two years.
I saw this on the news ticker on the elevator up to the office today and my jaw dropped...

1 in 3 people are this dumb?

god, maybe McCain DOES have a chance...

Redlemon 07-02-2008 07:09 AM

Could be people like Joe...
Quote:

In an appearance Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," Lieberman suggested that the threat of a terrorist attack early in the next administration is the reason that voters need to elect Sen. John McCain president because the Republican is "ready to be commander in chief on Day 1."

"Why? Because our enemies will test the new president early," Lieberman said. "Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration; 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration. John McCain is ready to take the reins on Jan. 20, 2009. He doesn't need any training."

Things like this make me wonder, how different the world would be without the news?

News surveys are such a load of shit anyways..... you could pretty much set the results depending on where you take the group from..

as long as there is news, there will be people afraid of terrorists. I am willing to say the word Terrorist is in the news everyday.

Willravel 07-02-2008 08:45 PM

Perspective time: 3000 people died for this.

Shauk 07-02-2008 11:48 PM

so the remaining millions could act like retards, and allow our president to destroy our rights? a lot more died than that to give us those supposed rights to begin with. Surprising it takes so little to erode that.

Bingo.

will....I think you might appreciate this interview with Prof. Hans Koechler, President of the International Progress Organisation, on how governments are using "the terrorist threat" as a propaganda tool:
U.N. Observer Says Governments Using Terror to Instill Fear in Communities
I particularly agree with his argument that such a strategy/policy will be self-defeating:
Quote:

Prof. Koechler: It is finally doomed to fail because it necessitates a constant a kind of perpetual mobilisation of the people and of the resources of a country. When you present the threat as universal and when there is no possibility to identify specifically certain groups from which the threat emerges, you have to engage in a total of strategy of prevention and you have to exclude even the slightest possibility of attack from whichever direction and that means you have to be prepared 24 hours seven days a week hundred percent. And for that reason somehow the …somehow the…strength or the capacities of the countries that engage in such an undertaking will be exhausted and the other reason why I think this is in the medium and long term is a self-defeating exercise. And the other reason is this kind of strategy antagonizes entire nations and even peoples and civilizations in such a way that they will not feel any loyalty towards those countries that engage in that struggle and they may challenge the supremacy of those countries and they may be more determined in their resistance than they otherwise would be, if there would be a kind of rational relationship on the basis of the definition of mutual interest, as also could be the case.
Others may not find it so enlightening.

Heh, a friend emailed that to me a few days ago as a matter of fact. It's a very well written article and actually my post was in part because of my reading. Terrorism is about as scary to me now as nuclear weapons were to me in the 80s.

LoganSnake 07-03-2008 10:19 AM

Why would you worry about nukes at 5-7 years old?

Anyway, I don't even think about it.

You didn't know my grandfather.

blahblah454 07-03-2008 05:25 PM

So you are seriously scared of terrorism? Its not like you live in Britain or anything

Its the ultimate war! The war that can not possibly end. Sounds like a good idea to me.

LoganSnake 07-03-2008 07:41 PM

Well, at least the Chinese don't have anything to worry about with their new Segway anti-terrorism unit.

No mater how many times I see that picture, I can't help but think "These guys are beating our asses at economics?!"

"you will be assbored"

"fesistance is rutile"

" may you live in interesting times."

It doesn't take that many letters to change curse to caress.

PEACE.

Grasshopper Green 07-06-2008 07:04 AM

Hasn't there been an imminent attack since 9/11?

I have a lot more to worry about than terrorism. If it happens, it happens.

MSD 07-07-2008 04:05 PM

I no longer believe in things or worry about things. What happens, happens. I sometimes take time to consider what I'd do if something bad happened, but beyond having a general idea of how to take care of myself and my family, it's not worth the time.

When I was about 8 years old, I started reading about nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Simultaneous with my compulsive fear of alien abduction (until I was about 16,) I also lived every day of my life certain that terrorists or the Soviets (yes, this was after the fall of the USSR) would nuke New York.

Anyone with the disposable income an industrialized country should have is capable of buying out a country whose leaders are mortgaging it on a whim.

We had better things to do than nuking NYC.

Hm. I don't believe I have ever concerned myself with any outside threat. I guess between having good friends and a great family, I felt secure enough to not worry about anything.
