A Monday on 1984

Crack open that nice cold beer....it's time to Partee:

"Reminder: Monday is Wiretap the Internet Day

May 14th is the official deadline for cable modem companies, DSL providers, broadband over powerline, satellite internet companies and some universities to finish wiring up their networks with FBI-friendly surveillance gear, to comply with the FCC's expanded interpretation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act. I saw this on Wired News.

This was inevitable. Law enforcement was not going to let a black spot like the Internet *not* be open to their investigations.

Time to ramp up the use of encryption programs, if only to fuck with the system.

I wonder if something like auditor linux will come out that is totally encrypted (using new encryption techniques that can't be cracked by super computers or quantum computers) and allows untraceable communication. A user would just have to boot up the CD, and once they shut down, there would be no record of anything on the PC.

What I can't help but wonder is how this affects those of us who are outside the United States and therefore outside the jurisdiction of both the FCC and the FBI. So far as I know, neither the CRTC nor CSIS have any sort of similar program.

Meh. If you're that paranoid, there are plenty of commercially available encryption programs designed to impede just that sort of covert surveillance. Better yet (and not to repeat myself, but) you could simply not post anything online that you don't want to be publicly available.

and theres free software such as TOR http://tor.eff.org/index.html.en

that will encrypt and reroute your traffic as well

I use it at work sometimes (temp university job), mostly just to see how much encrypted traffic I can run thru my comp and see if they ever say anything.

Maybe I am wierd but... even if you are a consparicy theorist... I would think that unless you are a very active anti goverment anarchist... or actully a crook, they wont give two shits and a giggle about what you are doing online. I mean lots of people are online and even with the most sophisticated surveillance someone has to watch it.

Just put "Tubgirl" in the subject line of all your secret emails, if they've seen that once they'll never click on it again.
