MTV Icon - Metallica

Wow, I was suprised. It turned out much better than I thought it would. I can't believe i'm saying this but Limp Bizkit and Korn were great. Avril Lavigne did better than I thought she would but seeing as how I was expecting crap, that's not saying much. Overall, I'd say it was a pretty good show. Thoughts?

Awww, I missed it! I used to be a big Metallica fan (and still am) of their older material.

I thought Load and Re-load were crap, however they do deserve to be recognized for their influence all these years.

Which song did Avril perform?

Avril did Fuel and it turned out much better than that Chop Suey cover that's floating around.

Agreed

but I couldn't watch her destroy Fuel... I had to turn it off right after the intro, she just stood there like a bored hooker.

Let me know if you find one, and where..

Aron Lewis disapointed me the most, and he was who I expected to take the show. Nothing Else Matters is one of my favorite songs, but I think he ruined it. Sorry Aron.

AND WHO THE HELL LET SNOOP DOG UP THERE?!?!?! I will never listen to Sad But True the same again.

I was happy with Avril, it wasn't bad. She could have done better with some more stage presence.. But.. Think about it.. Imagine yourself in her, or any of there shoes.. Your standing in front of your four biggest icons. The only thing on your mind is "Oh God, I hope I don't fuck this up." And for Avril, being a girl, it's got to be harder. James Hetfield has a "don't fuck with my music" attitude. He is very proud of his art. If it were me up there in front of them, I'd have shit myself. With that being said, I think they all did a great job(except kORn, I had to get up during that part).. And I was proud to see the boys get the credit they deserve.

Avrils band nailed Fuel. Avril just looked like a limp doll trying to remember the lyrics.

I, as always, was disappointed in Aaron Lewis's ability to sing. He totally ruined Nothing Else Matters.

Korn had a very Kornish feel and didnt really sound like a cover song it was so far from sounding anything like metallica.

Snoop dog.. well.. that was retarded...

Lisa marie looks way to much like elvis to be pretty, she voice sounds like a man and well.. wtf was she doing there?

Agreed. She April/Avril, whatever pretty much stood there like a potted plant. Her backup band however did a good job.

Aaron Lewis/Staind, for some reason the tunings they used on their guitars made Nothing Else Matters sound really muddy - should have used a more standard tuning instead of their fave setup.

Limp Bizkit and Korn I think did an admirable job. While the verses were not to my liking, they had some pretty nasty riffs/bridges in there.

And Snoop - never should have happened - not even a 'f'schinzzle or anything. At least we now know he can't sing.

weird, my take was way different than most here...

avril proved she can't sing or have stage presence, and her band was so-so with some very obvious missed notes leading into the solo.

snoop was hilarious. was obvious he put no effort into the performance, he just went up there to be snoop. "metallica 2003, beotch!" how do you end a song better than that?

aaron lewis can actually sing, but that performance (instumentally and vocally) was painful.

korn, i thought, did the most repectable cover.

it pains me to watch/hear fred durst and his band of floggers.

where was sum41? thought they were supposed to perform, which might have been fun.

metallica relatively tore it up. james is a monster rhythm guitarist and rob t. seemed to fit in well. damn MTV and cutting off the new song.

Sum 41 did a little medley of "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Enter Sandman" and maybe something else.

Avril Lavigne blows....

Korn was ok

limpbizkit did a nice job of making the song their own

Snoop Doggy Dogg was high as a motherfucker

Aaron Lewis needs to stop. Has anyone heard the live cover version of Pearl Jam's "Black" that is floating around the radio? He makes every song sound like "Outside"

The song Metallica played going into the credits (that got cut off)....is that a new song from the "St. Anger" album? If so, it was heavier than anything they've done in 12 years.

I got a good laugh out of Snoop Dog. Korn's version of One was pretty cool, I've always liked that song. And yes, the song that was played as the credits started rolling was a new song that's going to be on the new Album.

Only saw parts of it. Mostly a bore fest with horrible groups doing their music. Even Metallica sucks now. From the Black alum on is all garbage. They sold out and the Napster deal didn't help.

Everything up to ....And Justice For All is fucking awesome. All classic metal. I just don't like the direction the band went after that.

The track played at the very end of Icon was from St Anger. I can't tell you anymore than that, or how I know. But St Anger is heavier than anything else to date. Fans, from new to old, will bang there heads to this. But be warned, it is angry. This music contains alot of Hetfield retrabution left over from rehab. You'll all love it.

I thought the whole show was great.. and there even bringing back Head Bangers ball.. the sad thing is it has to be on mtv2.. of course, they couldn't have it on there regular mtv channel.. it would hurt there reputation and have all the wrap fanatics would have a hissy fit that metal is coming back and would cramp there style.

the only thing I didn't like about the show is that they cut off Metalica's encore song during there performance and ended the show.. dambit ..I wanted to hear the rest of that.. the new bassist fits in pretty good.

And Justice for All, is still one of the best metal albums of all time...as far as anything after that goes, I just couldn't evolve with them. One band that is still on top of the metal scene, and sets the standard for anything metal, is Slayer. Ask any new death metal, thrash, speed, grind...whatever....who some of their influences were and guarantee they say SLayer. Sorry for the Slayer rant...I had too.....The show was good though, Metallica has paid their dues, they deserve it.

I didnt see anybody say it up there, i only scanned through it but, the song they played at the end is off of St. Anger. It's called "Frantic" and it seems that they are just as focused on metal as they were in the '80s.

It's going to be great to read the messeges on some message boards after that album comes out. All the people that have been bashing them and saying they cant play metal will be the first ones to say that they are the best band in metal again!

I love it when people say, "I used to love metallica, then I thought they turned to crap when Load and Reload came out" or "Those greedy bastards should pay for what they did to Napster"

Point #1:
I must insist that you go to www.wrif.com and listen to the clip, that should quell any worries.

Point #2:
If you had kept up on your information and not jumped on the bandwagon, you would've read the interview with Het and Ulrich on WHY they did what they did. They made a very valid point.

If the record companies make less money, what is the first to go, aspiring artists that are trying to make it.

THAT is why they were against it.

Het also brought up a damn good point, If you like a new band that is trying to make it out of the 'underground' and you download their music but don't buy the CD, thats one less chance for them to afford their career.

Sad smack of reality, it takes a lot of money to start out especially with touring.

IMO sum41 sounded the best, and were the only ones that actually pulled off one of kirk's solos (the master of puppets solo). Bravo to them.

Avril and her band actually made Fuel sound BORING, and I had to laugh at the guitarist's pussy version of the solo.

Korn was ok, but Fieldy's clicky clicky bass sound really bothered me (he wasn't even clicking in beat!!!). And they didn't bother with any of the solo, which makes the song IMO.

The staind guys sounded pretty good, but I was dissapointed cause they also cut out the solo.

Snoop.....well....better luck next time?

And of course Metallica owned. Their new bassist did some sweet fills. He's kinda goofy looking with his bass at his ankles, but as long as he sounds good.
