Best radio station

I am blessed. Out here in Phoenix we have the best radio station I think in the entire universe.

The Edge 103.9 (www.theedge1039.com) is incredible. They are independently owned, so they play whatever the hell they want (it's punk/rock/ska stuff mostly). Recently they have been doing some changes to take advantage of their "independence" by polling people online and listening to calls with suggestions on how they can improve. They play music practically all the time, less talk, less commercials, lots and lots of music, and they don't cut into the beginnings and ends of songs. On the Edge you'll hear Sublime, Nirvana, Bad Religion, Authority Zero, Incubus, the Pixies and you WON'T hear shit like Hoobastank and Evanesence.

I know when I lived in Jersey I loved K-Rock 92.3 NY was the best. I was in Boston in June and there was a cool station out of Providence that I think was run out of Brown. What radio stations do you guys like to listen to? It's always good to know a good station when you are travelling :)

Connecticut is a black hole for music. Every station sucks, some less than others.

We have a good station here in Charlotte, 95.7 The Ride. They too are an indy station and play whatever they want, mostly good classic rock with a leaning towards more folksy stuff (think Bob Dylan instead of Chicago). Its a great station--very few commercials, no stupid contests or morning talkshows... Its all about the music, and they do a damn good job of it.

This one isn't bad if you like Zep, Sabbath, Metallica etc,.. out of Putnam, Conn, I believe.

Well, the artistlist looks interesting, but as far as I can tell, it is just streaming audio. Can't do that at work, can't pick it up in the car, so it doesn't count for me. I want to hear things that are both "new" and "rock". I feel like the 35 year old dinosaur that I am when I hear the current bandnames, 'cause I have no idea who they are anymore. Used to listen to Radio104, but ClearChannel sucked the life out of the station and spit it out.

Polyphobic 08-10-2004 08:36 AM

Denver is also super crappy for radio. Just the same old generic genre stations. Plus, my taste in music is a bit strange anyhow.

Redlemon 08-10-2004 08:41 AM

Oh, I should probably put the stations I like in here instead of just complaining.

Central New Jersey: 106.3, G106.3 FM Radio (rock alternative)

Massachusetts: 101.7, FNX Radio Network (rock alternative, but more danceish as well)
WERS.org :: 88.9FM :: Emerson College Radio (Saturday is unbeatable; 10 AM -2 PM is Broadway, followed by 2 PM - 5 PM a cappella)

11 years after they started, I still have a lot of resentment directed towards the edge. Before they became 103.9, they were on 100.3. Before they had the 100.3 frequency a metal station was operating on that station.

It wasn't glam metal either, it was Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, Pantera, etc. (real metal). They were the first station in town to play songs uncensored. They even played so what! by metallica every now and then and had a weekly metallica only hour. Anyways, alternative music became the new rage and out went zrock and in came the edge. It's been 10 years and I still haven't forgiven those fuckers.

About the edge being all independant, they may be, but i've seen radio stations in other towns will that same logo, only different call letters and frequency.

Polyphobic 08-10-2004 09:04 AM

I'd post the radio stations I like but they are internet radio. I'm assuming this is not the thread for internet radio stations.

absorbentishe 08-10-2004 09:36 AM

Out of Windsor On., 88.7 CIMX is the best I can get around here in Toledo. After that, WRIF in Detroit, and a local station 106.5 The Zone.

Sounds like a good idea for a parallel thread; go for it!

here here!
KEXP is widely regarded as one of the world's best stations. During the morning through about 6pm they play a pretty good mix, but mostly focusing on the punk/rock/emo tip, but also doing quality hiphop, country, electronic, etc.. after about 6pm are the specialty shows, which I love... incredible shows, with nonstop great music
/end ramble
I love this station.

105.9 - The Rock in Nashville, TN. Classic Rock, and some talk shows earlier in the morning/late night.

I'm getting used to some Sirius satellite radio stations (Sirius receiver came with my new car) for the most part now.

Bodyhammer86 08-13-2004 09:52 AM

i've long since given up listening to the radio here where i live (mattoon, illinois). there's 104.3, which is your typical pop/rap/r&b/pussy rock station. then you have 106.7, which is a classic rock station which isn't bad. 89.9 is a college station which plays some ok stuff from time to time. and then we 92.1 (*pukes*).... god, do i ever hate modern rock radio. if i have to hear smile empty soul, three days grace, or seether ever again, i will bomb that station

roachboy 08-13-2004 10:13 AM

philadelphia is a broadcast radio wasteland.

i tend to listen to college stations in general--the best one around here is from princeton--but in philly, all have been taken over by universities, gutted and turned into crappy npr outlets.

i particularly loathe penn's station, wxpn, because i remember when it did not suck, and how big a deal it was for experimental music in a range of genres when it didnt. now the station is bad sonic wallpaper 24/7.

Can you pick up 88.1 wbgu out of BG. Its the collage station (BGSU). They have everything you could want.

http://www.wbgufm.com/ is the URL. Its got a stream, so if anyone wants to check out a good collage radio station, check it. I know that it is big in other parts of the world for its metal shows/department.
