What instruments do you play?

As I was thumbing through one of my musical history books today, it occurred to me the sheer volume of musical instruments that exist out there. Thus, I'm a bit curious to find out what instruments everyone plays.

I'll go ahead and start:
- Electric Bass
- Double Bass (plain ol' acoustic type, since i can't afford an electric upright)
- Ocarina
- Didgeridoo (just started learning, and learning to circular breath is a bitch)

I'm looking forward to the replies, especially to see what unusual instruments pop up.

BTW, if there has been a thread like this in the past, then moddies, feel free to delete this one. I didn't see one, but I might not have been thorough enough.

nhx 07-01-2004 05:25 PM

Started w/ electric guitar, moved to electric bass, and now I'm trying to teach myself piano and cello. Quite a switch indeed.

shred_head 07-01-2004 09:16 PM

Just guitar for me. I tried taking piano lessons for about a year but just couldn't get the independent two hand coordination down, wish I would've tried harder though.

The5thCandidate 07-01-2004 09:41 PM

I have a very long list of thing that I can sort of play, but the only instrument that I've had any sort of teaching in is the highland bagpipes.

redarrow 07-02-2004 01:00 AM

Guitar, Epiphone Acoustic and Fender Strat for 3 years.

I know a little piano too on my Yamaha electric keyboard.

I might buy a drumset sometime this year, thatd be fun.

Redlemon 07-02-2004 05:46 AM

Piano (up through 6th grade)
Clarinet (Bb and Eb soprano, through 12th grade)
Baritone Horn (college)
Mouth Drumming (presently, but not very good yet)

And singing through all of that time.

ShaniFaye 07-02-2004 05:59 AM

I can play Bagpipes....not well mind you...but I can still play

Wow, I love the bagpipes! Do you wear a cute little plaid skirt when you do? ;)

As for me, I'm a singer. :D

SpikeQX99 07-02-2004 06:17 PM

I just went out a bought an electric geetar...

Someday I will be rock god!

optik_nerve 07-02-2004 07:25 PM

My main instrument is electric guitar. I can play bass too and I'm pretty good at piano. Looking to get a synth soon. :)

TheShadow 07-02-2004 07:48 PM

Just the piano. I used to take lessons, but I just play for fun now.

gnort 07-02-2004 10:22 PM

Piano

and I too am learning the Didgeridoo. Circular breathing is pretty hard.

Fly 07-03-2004 04:14 AM

drummer here..........

but i play guitar and bass as well......

harmonica count?...........and a bit of piano.

put it in front of me and i'll learn it.

roachboy 07-03-2004 10:26 AM

piano. and the soundboard.

PoweredByPorn 07-04-2004 02:49 PM

Just guitar right now. I had an electric bass for a while, but ended up selling it. Wish I hadn't, now. Thinking of getting another one... doubles my chances of finding a spot in a band.

I'd love to learn keyboard/synth, too, bit if I'm putting a gigworthy bass rig together the synth will have to wait.

Hey now, it's called a kilt. And I don't know about ShaniFaye but yes, I wear one.

micah67 07-04-2004 03:19 PM

Acoustic and Electric guitar - self taught over 20 years and I play for my own enjoyment.

My biggest problem is rhythm but since I don't play with others, it's just my special version of whatever song I play!

I've got a didgeridoo, too but haven't got it down...

Ella 07-04-2004 04:04 PM

I play the most portable instrument of all....my voice.

todd 07-06-2004 10:59 AM

I no longer practice/play regularly anything, but i've taken lessons for the guitar, trumpet, and piano. Out of the 3, I remember the most from piano lessons. I dropped out of all those lessons after a couple months. I jus hated having to make my way to the lessons 2 times a week. I do much better at things that i've self taught myself.

I've been wanting to buy a cheap trumpet or drum set and just fool around and teach myself. The drums don't look to complicated, as long as you have rhythm.

If I had gotten good enuff to play with the pipe band I was taking lessons from I would have worn one...but alas I didnt....my fingers are to short to hold it correctly for competition so I did the dumb ass thing and quit my lessons.

SinisterMotives 07-06-2004 11:06 AM

I tooled around with electric guitars for a few years but didn't really get good enough to play in a band or anything.

Nefir 07-06-2004 07:40 PM

I'm in the process of learning to play a Mobius Megatar. I am nowhere good enough to actually play a song from start to finish though.

Still getting acquainted with the fetboard and my brain's unwillingness to allow for my hands to work interdependently. Its loads of fun.

mingusfingers 07-06-2004 09:56 PM

Trombone! Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

kalashnikov 07-06-2004 10:39 PM

I played the cello from some silly early age through the end of 8th grade. After a 6 year musical hiatus, I have started teaching myself the mandolin. Aside from the joys of gaining big-ass finger calluses, the biggest challenge is learning to play with chords. But it is fairly easy, and a lot of fun. It is really enjoyable playing along with blues songs, because they are simple enough that I can keep up. Blues mandolin anyone?
I also stumbled upon the opening riff of Day Tripper by the Beatles! Woo!

gboz 07-08-2004 06:37 AM

I started out on drums through high school then went to bass guitar and played in several bands but I was always practicing on guitar then finally the band I was in lost a guitar player and I took his spot and I've been doing that for about 20 years now in many diverse circumstances, mostly rock bands.
I bought a mandolin 2 weeks ago and have used it in 2 shows already. It's given me a kick in the butt.

mrbill700 07-08-2004 06:44 AM

Mr Scorcex 07-15-2004 01:13 PM

I mostly rock out the Tenor Sax, though I can also play alto and bari. I took piano lessons in grade school but have since forgotten the bass clef and how to play with my left hand, so if I play a song on the piano its basically melody only. I wish I knew how to play one of those stand-up acoustic basses, because those just ooze style.

Bobaphat 07-15-2004 01:56 PM

Guitar, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium and Jew's harp. Anyone want to start a TFP band?

ForwardtoDeath 07-15-2004 03:07 PM

I started off with saxaphone, probably couldnt play that anymore though. Right now, I play guitar and am learning to play harmonica. I also want to get my hands on a sitar when I have the money to spend.

and a TFP band would be awesome!!!

Krycheck 07-17-2004 05:54 PM

Drums. Actually I used too. While in high school my brother and I shared one. I moved out, got married and he kept it.

Im looking to buy my own again real soon. Waiting to get my garage cleaned out

braindamage351 07-22-2004 05:12 PM

I play Electric Guitar and apparently bass. One day when I was at my friends house I fooled around with his bass, and it actually came pretty naturally. I can slap Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin. My brother's bass is at my house, but there's something wrong with the wiring and it won't work with an amp.

fallenangel 07-23-2004 12:16 PM

Alto Sax... played for a few years, love jazz music, but it's been over a 2 years since i've picked mine up :(

I can also tinker away at the piano. :D

freeload 07-23-2004 01:34 PM

Drums and percussion.

Not very musical when it comes to piano, guitar, etc.

gorilla 07-25-2004 09:38 PM

drummer... but I might take a shot at acoustic guitar sometime soon

jaypc2 07-28-2004 06:10 PM

damn alot.... um guitar(classical, electric, bluegrass, and accoustic,), bass, upright, chello, violion, madalin, banjo, trumpet, tuba, baritone, trombone, drums, paino, harmonica, clarinet, sax, flute, and i dabble in many others...

stonegrody 07-30-2004 04:51 PM

I started pretty young. First instrument was Trombone which branched off to Trumpet, French Horn, Tuba, Soprano, Baritone and flugelhorn. Then I got in percussion which was marching bass drum and later on set drums. Now I play guitar, bass guitar and sing. Been in a few bands and still write. Looking for a new band at the moment and considering doing some acoustic coffee shop type of stuff soon.

goateebird 07-30-2004 08:10 PM

Piano (from kindergarten until 7th grade. I quit because i actually fell asleep while playing once at home. That's how bored I was.)
Bb Clarinet (7th grade to present)
Bass Clarinet (7th grade. Could probably still play now, just haven't tried)
Alto Sax (8th grade to present)
Guitar (9th grade to present)
Voice (10th grade to present)
A Clarinet (11th grade to present)
Eb Clarinet (11th-12th grade, don't own one so I don't get to play it often)

In the future, I'd like to take up cello.

sprocket 07-31-2004 06:13 PM

Guitar was my first.

Now my main instrument for creating sound is:

Reason 2.5

http://www.propellerheads.se/

jakewesier 08-03-2004 04:21 PM

Guitar, Bass, Drums and a little Piano. I went to School and got a degree in Jazz Guitar, so that's my main thing. I love all sorts of music and dabbel in a bit of it all but specialize in improvisation in all sorts of styles.

I do vocals as well. I currently teach privately to sustain myself, pay bills and well that's about all.

I played Trombone for years as well.

north 08-04-2004 08:18 PM

let's see, i taught myself drums in high school and then guitar and bass. recently piano. and i'm beginning trumpet lessons shortly, so wish me luck cos i don't have big cheeks or look like louis armstrong.

orphen 08-05-2004 01:23 AM

electric guitar. mostly modern/punk/post-metal stuff. nothing special, just for fun :)

Jadedfox 08-05-2004 02:10 AM

Electric and acoustic guitar
Bass guitar
Piano
Drums (but not too seriously)

--jaded

anti fishstick 08-05-2004 08:04 PM

violin and some guitar.

or some violin and a little guitar :o

Arroe 08-05-2004 09:24 PM

Alto Saxophone - 8 years
Baritone Saxaphone - 4 years
Electric Guitar (first was an '81 Gibson Les Paul and now a prototype model American Fender Stratocaster) - 4 years
Acoustic Guitar (own a Fender, acoustic is the same as electric though) - 4 years

I play them all regularly, guitar every day for at least an hour, ussually 2 hours a day, and sax somedays I play 5 hours and somedays I'll just play 15 minutes.

Piano I learned in kindergarden and played that for 3 years but even though I don't own a piano I can still play when I'm at a friend's house, because I can read music very well and I know where all the keys are. I could probably brush up on my piano though...

bundy 08-05-2004 09:53 PM

i played violin from a very young age through to high school, where i swapped to viola.
i also play piano (which i've played practically all of my life).

sailor 08-06-2004 07:04 AM

I played for five years, when I quit because the band director was an asshole. I picked up the set then, and still play occasionally. I wish I still played percussion, that was so much fun...

Ive also played guitar for five or six years, though not much in the past couple of years. Mostly acoustic.

Captain Canada 08-17-2004 02:59 PM

Bagpipes and turntables....and yes I consider turntables an instrument.

Dennis 08-17-2004 03:55 PM

Piano, air guitar :) , clarinet, choral singing (does that even count?) in the Bass 1 voice part, harmonica and triangle.

Haha, I 'play' the turntables too . ;)

And the piano and the saxophone.

Although I'm quite rusty at all 3 due to a major examination that's coming up. Bummer :(

amonkie 08-17-2004 11:24 PM

Piano first and foremost
concert percussion
slowly learning acoustic guitar

alpha 08-17-2004 11:39 PM

PulpMind 08-18-2004 12:38 AM

My laptop is my instrument. It is the new punk rock, havn't you heard? ;)

currently using Reason 2.5 with a midi keyboard, but hoping to switch to Logic 6 soon.

I'm also self taught with harmonica, and pretty damn good too, if I do say so myself.

I used to play Trumpet and Baritone, but I've lost any skill there.

cameroncrazy822 08-18-2004 06:47 AM

I'm not muscially inclined at all, sorry to say, but I do play the skin flute like nobody's business!

inferno360 08-18-2004 07:34 AM

combatmedicjen 08-21-2004 06:52 PM

Yay instruments!! I used to be a french horn performance/music education major at U of M... so here's my instruments, most proficient to least!

French Horn, Trumpet, Mellophone, Piano, Bugle, Percussion, Keyboard Percussion (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, etc.), Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, Bass Guitar, Guitar, Drums, Digeridoo, Clarinet, Violin, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon.

I'm sorry to say that my digeridoo cracked lengthwise, so that was the end of that:-( Do recorders count? How about fifes?

Anybody want to start a band?? :p

Confederate 08-21-2004 07:06 PM

Baritone and tuba, does that count :)

ThrasheR 08-21-2004 07:26 PM

I play guitar, electric.
