Brother Bands

Here is a list of 5 brother bands and thought we'd see who is the best.

Of course most everyone knows I am partial to the brothers Davies but there are other groups I suppose.

I could have included Heart because technically the Wilson sisters were married to brothers who played in the band.

perripken 06-18-2004 02:20 PM

There's also Allman Brothers- Greg and Duane Allman
The Guess Who- Bachman brothers
Bachman Turner Overdrive- Bachman Brothers, Turner Brothers
Wishbone Ash- Turner Brothers
Styx- John Panazzo, Chuck Panazzo
Marshall Tucker- Toy Caldwell, Tommy Caldwell
I think Toto had two brothers,
I'm sure there are more- I'm just brainfarting right now!

pan6467 06-19-2004 04:47 PM

I had a brainfart also when making the list. I forgot the Allmans. Didn't even realize the others you mentioned were brothers, Esp. BTO and the Guess Who as I listen to both.

There's also INXS the Farris brothers. And didn't Lynard have brothers?

numberfive 06-20-2004 12:27 AM

There's Thrice :)

The bassist and drummer are brothers.

Out of those I chose Van Halen. Why? Because they're VAN HALEN!

warrrreagl 06-20-2004 04:31 AM

I voted for Allman Brothers (Others), but I'm waiting breathlessly for someone to toss a vote to The Ramones.

Scipio 06-20-2004 12:22 PM

I suppose Oasis; Morning Glory is a great album, imho.

PoweredByPorn 06-20-2004 02:51 PM

No AC/DC (Malcolm and Angus Young)?

When Ronnie Van Zant dies in the plane crash, his brother Johnny started singing in his place. Don't know if that qualifies them or not.

I knew that, but for some reason thought 2 of the instrumentalists were brothers also.

Anyway good idea but realizing should have done better homework.

Nope, the only siblings in Skynyrd were Stevie Gaines (guitar) and Cassie Gaines (backing vocals) -brother and sister
btw- both died in the plane crash.

Exactly! I couldn't agree more. I can't wait to see them on tour again!

Thanks Per I knew it was something like that.

So far the Van Halens are kicking ass. Perhaps if I rewmind people their first big hit was a remake of the KINKS You Relly Got Me will prod people over.......lol didn't think so.

Ah well something to be said loving the band that make the Gallagher fights look lame.

Think out of all the brothers bands the Van Halens are the only ones who haven't fought each other.

thespian86 06-21-2004 09:39 AM

Oasis because of one cd that made my life so much better...

rev_skarekroe 06-21-2004 10:04 AM

The Bee Gees
A Flock of Seagulls
The Proclaimers
Everly Brothers
The Doobie Brothers

Actually, uh, scratch that last one...

pan6467 06-21-2004 10:22 AM

I was really trying to grab "supergroups" or groups that were a major player at one time (at least in the USA).

Other than the Beegees maybe the Everlys the ones you listed Rev. I don't think were much of a factor.

mercury-hg 06-21-2004 07:19 PM

a vote for STP here

KWSN 06-22-2004 03:40 AM

Out of the choices given I'd say Dire Straits.

Out of all "brother bands..."

I'd still probably say Dire Straits.

kalisto_911 06-22-2004 06:57 AM

I went with CCR but after having read the thread through I think it was more of a gut reaction hehe.

AGREED!

H12 06-26-2004 09:24 PM

Oasis, man...just, frickin', Oasis. I didn't even remember there were brothers in the band, but since there are, Oasis.

pan6467 06-27-2004 12:11 AM

Another biggy I missedand it's a shame because they are one of my favorite bands (even if every song sounds the same) is AC/DC.

minusthesoul 06-27-2004 06:08 PM

It was a tough choice for me between Oasis and CCR. In the end, I went with Oasis.

Yeah! What's that about? AC/DC is one of the best and most successful brother bands of all time!

God of Thunder 06-28-2004 08:20 AM

What about the Blues Brothers????

Voted for Van Halen

Booray 06-28-2004 04:47 PM

There's also the North Mississippi Allstars, but even though they won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues album a couple of years ago (and consistently tear it up on tour), they're probably not well-known enough...yet. If you're an Allman Brothers fan, you'd probably love these guys.

My vote would have to be between the Allman Brothers or Dire Straits (although David Knopfler was only on the first two Dire Straits albums and the Allmans only had Duane for 2.5 albums). Guess I vote for the Allmans

choskins 06-28-2004 04:49 PM

1) Allman Brothers
2) Dire Straits
3) Kinks

In my opinion.

Exodus 06-28-2004 05:13 PM

Im a little surprised nobody has mentioned The Black Crowes (Chris and Rich Robinson). "She Talks To Angels" is one of my favorite songs.

Yeah, and I'd do Chris'es wife in a heartbeat!

choskins 06-28-2004 06:19 PM

I forgot the Black Crowes. They would definitely be in my Top 10.

ditto. I knew there was someone big out there that I was a fan of that I didn't think of.

Booray 06-28-2004 06:45 PM

Soulive is another one that just came to mind that I'd list in my top ten.

If you're not familiar, you can check out a few clips here:
http://www.soulive.com/mx/
They're a jazz/funk/groove trio from Boston with two brothers on drums and keys (both great musicians) and a kickass guitarist to round out the group.

choskins 06-28-2004 06:47 PM

No one has mentioned the Vaughn brothers either.

Booray 06-28-2004 07:46 PM

I don't think the Vaughan brothers ever played in a band together (except for maybe when the two were younger and relatively unknown prior to the Thunderbirds and Double Trouble).

Also, I don't think both of the Bachman brothers were in The Guess Who.

Some other brother groups:
The Beach Boys
The Neville Brothers

perripken 06-28-2004 09:07 PM

Actually Booray, Randy Bachman was the only brother that was "original" in the band. His brother Rob sat in and played drums at one point in a watered down version of The Guess Who.
All three Bachman brothers played in BTO at one time or another.
(Randy, Rob, and Tim)

As far as the Vaughan Brothers go, they did play in a band together and made an album together (Family Style) just before Stevie's death.
The following excerpts are from Jimmy Vaughan's website.

In 1969, Vaughan helped found Texas Storm, a group that eschewed Top 40 covers for blues and soul with a Texas accent. The band eventually migrated to Austin, where they won over the college crowd and the Black and Chicano communities on the Capital City's East Side. Vaughan also helped jump start his brother Stevie's career when the younger Vaughan joined
Texas Storm on bass.

Fabulous Thunderbirds brought the blues back into the pop charts and the
contemporary musical lexicon, sparking a blues revival that continues
unabated today. Prior to leaving the group in 1990, Jimmie had joined up
with his brother Stevie to record Family Style, an album that reflected
their mutually deep musical roots and maturing modern artistic
sophistication.
Then in August, 1990, just a few weeks prior to the album's
release, Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin. The
tragedy devastated Jimmie, who retreated from touring and recording, though
he continued to play guitar every day, as he has throughout his life.
Meanwhile, the success of Family Style further enhanced Jimmie's reputation
as a distinctive musical stylist.

KWSN 06-28-2004 09:29 PM

Ooh, another one no one's mentioned is Chevelle.

All three members are brothers. Not the most inspired music ever but they do an outstanding live show.

I can't believe Oasis are beating Dire Straits and the Kinks.... I mean they DID have one good album and all but Straits and the Kinks are just in a totally different league if you ask me

That album is a pretty good listen if you've never heard it before.

I totally forgot about this, until someone mentioned the Vaughan brothers being in a band in the earlier reply. I'm going to have to go rummage through the box with all my old tapes it it and give it another listen, been forever since I heard it.

BTW my vote went for other, AC/DC. Although of the one's listed, it would have been a toss up between The Kinks and Dire Straits.

Booray 06-29-2004 08:59 AM

Thanks for setting me straight, perripken.

I agree about being surprised about Oasis' number of votes compared to the Kinks and Dire Straits.

Some other "brother bands" that I don't think have been mentioned:
Blues Traveler (Chan & Tad Kinchla; although Tad has only been with the band a few years; replaced Bobby Sheehan after he died)
Cowboy Junkies (Michael & Peter Timmins and, if you want to include sisters, Margo Timmins)
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones (Vic & Roy "Future Man" Wooten)
Aquarium Rescue Unit (Oteil & Kofi Burbridge)
