Aussie artists in the spotlight

What I will attempt to do here is highlight an Australian band or artist to share some of our great music around.

To start things off with one of my favourite singer/songwriters who has a great ability to sing about love lost, love found and relationships in general.
He plays the guitar with haunting tunes so if you get the chance, have a listen.

Dang, Kuepper has been around for a long time. His material is pretty well recieved by music listeners too. Its a shame I never heard of him until now. Thanks cchris ;) I may have to go find one of his cd's now. :D

cchris 05-04-2003 01:06 AM

Whilst the website aint much chop, the same cannot be said for Machine Gun Fellatio.

Think Sex Drugs & Rock n Roll, disco influence and a BIG BAND sound.
I was hooked the first time I heard "Mutha Fukka on a Motorcycle".

Well worth a listen.

chris, theres a song of thiers that i loved... from what i remember, it had something to do with an answering machine? bah, now i'll have to go digging up info...

cchris 05-05-2003 05:57 AM

Powderfinger have just released their new CD "Vulture Street".

LYRICS - SINCE YOU’VE BEEN GONE

There's a truth begging to be told as the blues grab and take a hold
To continue like this only acts as a force for no good

I just want to say that I miss you and I've felt pitiful since you've been gone
I'm just trying to say I need something I can lean against
So I'm gonna steady myself on a reliable friend

There's a weight dragging through my days that I spend trying to fill the space
That's been there since the day that we parted and made our goodbyes
There's a truth begging to be told as the blues grab and take a hold
And I just can't believe when I wake up that you could be gone

Latch 05-06-2003 06:12 AM

I'll agree with Machine Gun Fellatio. Their song "Dirty Fucking Whore" makes me crack up every time I hear it.

Lately though, I've been getting into some less mainstream Aussie groups. Two are:

http://www.xavierrudd.com/ -- Xavier Rudd. Plays guitar, digeridoo, drums, and more. Pretty good. Has done a tour in US + Canada I think, but not that well known yet.

http://www.rambunctious.com.au/ -- Rambunctious. A friend of mine got me into them, and I love them. Kind of Jack Johnson like, to give you an idea of their music. Heavily on my playlist at the moment.

I will add more later (I'm thinking tism, Sonic Animation).

cchris 05-06-2003 07:08 AM

Thanks for that.
Appreciate seeing a band with a digeridoo

Latch 05-07-2003 02:54 AM

Some more for you (the ones I mentioned before). I don't know if I'd call these guys mainstream. They are played on the radio every now and then, but I doubt anyone out of Oz would know them. Anyways, on with the groups.

tism (stands for This Is Serious Mum). No one is quite sure who these guys are, as they're always in bellaclavas (sp?). For the Americans (and anyone else) Bellaclavas = Ski Masks. Like those ones robbers always wear in bad movies. Anyways, their music generally has a (sometimes very cynical) point to it, while at the same time being funny. Their most popular song is "Greg! The Stop Sign!". They recently came out with a "best of" album, which gives you a pretty good collection of their most well known works throughout the years.

http://www.tism.com.au -- tism.

Sonic Animation. These guys are techno and may be known by other people for their recent song "I'm a DJ". For Triple J listeners, they were on one of the Hottest 100s for their song "Theophilus Thistler (An Exercise in Vowels)". I highly recommend listening to that song or at least reading the lyrics and thinking about how much of a mouthful it is to sing/rap. Anyways, on with the website.

http://www.sonicanimation.com.au/ - Sonic Animation.

Just one more that I don't know too much about. A friend of mine introduced me to the music of The GO Set. While they haven't hit big yet, I think they have the potential. One of their main instruments is a set of bagpipes, which is pretty cool. They will be doing a tour in Germany pretty soon.

http://www.thegoset.com/ - The GO Set

That's all for now, check them out!

what about radio birdman?
or were they kiwi's?

mercury-hg 05-08-2003 03:38 PM

plugging relatively unknown band(s)

killswitch engage! one of the only bands i've been introduced to this year and been truly impressed. here's an excerpt from allmusic.com about them that is pretty damn accurate and eloquent, IMO:

"This is a pure metal album that seemingly has ignored any fashionable trend and instead relies solely on skill and expertise to sculpt some of meatiest heavy metal since the glory days of Metallica and Slayer. Injected into these chaotic hardcore/death metal hybrid songs is an undeniable sense of melody that flawlessly enhances every track, and instead of turning Killswitch Engage's permanent heavy sound weaker, this melodic accompaniment only goes to make you realize how intense and exhilarating the band is when they explode in an inferno of enraged brutality. "

their songs that i've come across are free of guitar solos (unfortunately, i suppose) but the guitars are hardly one dimensional like most new metal i've come across. there's acoustic arrangements, heavy rhythmic stuff, melodic heavy stuff, the gamut (sp?). anyway, check them out!

anyone else excited over a new band?

Shokan 05-08-2003 04:20 PM

newish band - The Mooney Suzuki

good ole rock n roll baby

Tech 05-08-2003 04:22 PM

Anberlin!

i just got this album (Blueprints for the Black Market) and i love it

it's not metal, they are more emo-rock i guess. if you like Further Seems Forever and the Juliana Theory you will like Anberlin.

interview with the lead singer, Stephen Christian

p.s. i'm not a big emo fan at all but i still love the album, so don't hesitate too much if you think most emo sucks.

NuKE 05-08-2003 04:30 PM

yeah, killswitch engage is a fucking great band. Liberty (hardcore punk) is a great band, and so is deroot (metal) out of orlando.

Jadey 05-08-2003 09:40 PM

Relatively unknown bands that are awesome:

Maroon5
Grinspoon
Cyclefly
Boy Hits Car
The Guano Apes

Those are a few off the top of my head. Some of those bands are fairly well known outside of the US, but not too big in The States.

GTO 05-09-2003 12:53 AM

What about Aussie bands like:
'Jet'
'the casanovas'
'motor ace'
'eskimo joe'
'78 saab'
'the sleepy jackson'
and the great 'you am i'

I think 'you am i' have been in the shadow of powder finger as the premier aussie indie band for to long. Dont get me wrong powder finger are a top band, and perhaps more commercial radio friendly, and this is why they seem to be seen as Oz's top indie act. But after Tim rogers work on the 'dirty deeds' soundtrack and the new 'you am i' album, deliverance, the lads have to be the top aussie indie band.

hilbert25 05-09-2003 02:07 AM

Two bands that are really good, kinda punky, kinda Indy:

We Are Scientists
Stare Down Orion

ShadowWraith 05-09-2003 09:20 AM

Totally awsome unknown alt. rock bands:

Treble Charger
Splender
Sub7even
Athenaeum

The Reunion Show
Motion City Soundtrack

The Riddlin Kids and Marron 5 are both pretty awesome.

I'd like to add:
Allister (pop-punk)
Har Mar Superstar (funny/dirty)
Clovis (alt rock)
Love Association (orgy-type rock)

KWSN 05-09-2003 09:26 PM

THE APEX THEORY(All kinds of experimental rock)
Reference Songs:
Everything is different, you really have to hear about everything.

BLINDSIDE(Melodic hardcore/hard rock)
Reference Songs:
Everything I've heard by them is pretty hard, except for the song Silence

THE LIVING END(Australian good-old-fashioned REAL rock, but NOT garage rock)
Reference Songs:
ANYTHING BY THEM. All of their music is awesome. If you like one song, you'll like them all.

Those are the main bands I like to expose to people.... as of right now, I really can't think of anyone else. Just a note though, about EVERYONE who I have had listen to these bands, ESPECIALLY the Apex Theory and the Living End, has really enjoyed it... I highly recommend giving it all a try.

sngx1275 05-09-2003 09:56 PM

The Remedy Session (they have shit on mp3.com, I saw them live - pretty good, also talked to thier lead singer and drummer in person (both chicks both cool) IRL and online).

The Rocking Horse Winner. Saw them live too, lead singer is extremely hot IRL, but I haven't seen much promise from the pictures I've been able to dig up.

ZEKE!!!!

Download "Twisted" by them.. or Galaxie 500

Kadath 05-10-2003 07:00 PM

I dunno if they are all that unknown, but I like Farside a lot. Not Pharside, the rap group. Some songs by Farside are "Hope You're Unhappy," "I'll Wait Today," and "Dark." Sort of emo, I guess, though I hesitate to put anything in that much-maligned category for fear of scaring people off.

Five Pointe O are great, it's a pity that the singer and one of the guitarists left after the first album, their singer has such a good voice. The Infinity is one of the best songs ever.

Mention The Church to your typical music lover, and inevitably the spectre of their one and only hit, "Under the Milky Way," haunts the conversation, like an old debt. If you had a radio in the late eighties, you probably know that tune, with its crystalline 12-string guitars and its bagpipe solo.

If a band forms in Brisbane, will it cause an electrical storm in Newcastle? One small act can set off a chain reaction of chaotic riffs and thunderous bass. That's The Butterfly Effect.
For this powerful four-piece, the self-funded release of their self-titled EP sparked a whirlwind, swinging them into the Australian rock scene like a wrecking ball. 2002 saw them sign a deal with Roadshow Music and play to sold out gigs in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, not to mention blistering sets at Livid, the Falls Festival, Homebake and the Big Day Out. "Everything you could want to happen to you [as a band], happened last year. It's been crazy," says drummer, Ben Hall.
The band initially formed when Hall and guitarist, Kurt Goedhart went to High School together, originally setting out with a different bassist and singer. Soon Clint Boge took over on vocals. "During the first show with [Clint], we could feel a big difference in the vibe," says Hall. The current line-up was completed when bass player, Glenn Esmond, joined the band midway through last year.
It's proved a winning combination. Their EP has now sold in excess of 8,000 copies, their new single, "Crave" reached No. 11 on the Triple J Net50 in only its second week and "The Cell" featured in the Net50 for 15 weeks. Performing over 100 shows nationally, they've supported the likes of Superheist, Pacifier, Killing Heidi and Grinspoon. At the speed at which The Butterfly Effect is taking off, it might not be long before these bands are printed below them, as opposed to above.

"Rock show" lyrics

Would you like another pill
For printing up the dollar bills
In the end it's all the same
Keep on looking at the weather vane
Time controlling
Not worth knowing
Where the reasons' ending up it's easy to see
That no one cares, and nothing's free

You don't owe me
You can't sell that
Still controlling in the format

Get in a rock show
There's another fine reason
Get in a rock show
Yeah get in a rock show

When the joker plays another joke
The smoker takes another toke
Stars keep fallin from the sky
People watch and don't ask why
Glasses broken
Love unspoken
When the other preacher comes and rolls into town
You're looking up, you're looking down

You don't own me
You can't sell that
Still controlling in the format

Get in a rock show
There's another fine reason
Get in a rock show
There's another find rejected

You don't own me
You can sell that
Still controlling in the format

Get in the rock show
There's another fine reject
Get in a rock show
There's another fine reason
It's still all the same show
For still the same reason
Get in a rock show
There's an undefined reason...

The only real Aussie band I know is The Butterfly Effect, (http://www.butterflyeffect.com.au). They haven't released an album yet, and I can't get a hold of their EP but from what I've heard, they are good though.

cchris 06-10-2003 06:08 PM

Hey troit glad you like.

Spungfoo 06-10-2003 07:14 PM

One band I'd really recommend is Lacrimosa. Classical music mostly with metal tinges - about half their songs are actually structured like genuine classical (Baroque) instead of just an orchestra/synths replacing guitars found in bands like Therion. I think their album "Echoes" is done entirely in a classical style. Definitely worth checking out.

And now for something completely different - try Impaled Northern Moon Forest." This band is Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt's take on tr00 norwegian black metal. Recorded in a tr00 fashion, this was recorded in a bedroom with a acoustic guitar and someone slapping their knees for the drums. As usual, Putnam continues the tradition for Best. Song. Titles. Ever. Here's a few:

- GRIM AND FROSTBITTEN MOONGOATS OF THE NORTH
- GAZING AT THE BLASPHEMOUS MOON WHILE PERCHED ATOP A VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY FORSAKEN CREST OF THE / NORTHERN MOUNTIAN
-AWAITING THE BLASPHEMOUS ABOMINATION OF THE NECROYETI WHILE SAILING ON THE NORTHERNMOST FJORD OF XZFGIIIZMTSATH
- LUSTFULLY WORSHIPPING THE INVERTED MOONGOAT WHILE SKIING DOWN THE INVERTED NECROMOUNTAIN OF NECRODEATHMORTUM
- GRIM AND FROSTBITTEN GAY BAR

It might be hard to find, but should be a quick download - the album's only 11 megs (the longest song's about a minute long) :)

sw1tch 06-11-2003 12:17 AM

Lollipop Lust Kill - Hard rock, not very well known at all
Nonpoint - Pretty well known, great group imo.
Adema - Again, pretty well known, still a great band.
SR-71 - Quickly gained popularity, good 'almost punk but not quite'
Opeth - Again well known, awesome progressive metal
StereoMud - Great vocals/guitars, not well known.
Ill Nino - Good stuff, metal.

Sorry guys, but I tend to listen to borderline mainstream stuff ;)

//Edit: Finch is another good band. Goddamn my Maxtor for crapping out, else I'd have a whole shitload of bands to list.

Hunters And Collectors carved a unique path and place for themselves in Australian rock culture. The group was originally formed in post-punk 1981 in Melbourne as a collective rather than a band, an excursion into funk-rock rhythms and industrial Kraut-rock. (They named themselves after a song by Can). They ended up the thinking man's pub band.

I saw them many times live and fuck did they go off.

Sadly,they are no more.

Archie Roach's story has been told many times - most powerfully and gracefully in his own songs, such as Took The Children Away. His fourth album, Sensual Being, tells a dozen earthy, voluptuous stories which resonate with optimism and the joy of being in tune with family, spirit, soulmates and self.

All Homeboys Are Dickheads:

I know his dad's abusive
And his mum prefers the daughter;
I know he's got an attention
Deficiency disorder;
He is culturally excluded
And genetically inbred:
But the reason he's a homeboy
Is because he's a dickhead.

We all support empowerment
And positive discrimination
When your class, your race, your age, your face
Determine your social station;
A baseball cap and a love of rap
Might need sympathy - yet, still,
Possibly a homeboy could be
A dickhead pure and simple.

"Know your enemy well enough
And you will pity them instead" -
In The Brothers Karamazov
That's what Dostoyevsky said;
And pity soon will turn to love
Is what Jesus Christ once knew:
They both changed their minds the day when
They met a homeboy crew.

After the departure of second guitarist Tim Henwood in mid-2002, there were serious doubts flying around about the fate of Adelaide rockers The Superjesus.

Four school friends from the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria) formed The Fauves. The band took its name from the art movement Fauvism, which was characterised by both its intensity and infatuation with colour. Andrew Cox and Philip Leonard were entirely self-taught, managing to eschew standard musical formats and conventional guitar tunings in the process. The band's early sound was an energetic distillation of garage-punk rock riffs and surreal lyrics.

Named after former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, The Whitlams became one of Australia's more successful alternative acts of the late 1990s with their piano-driven pop.
Forming in Sydney in 1991, The Whitlams was originally a side project for local musicians Stevie Plunder and Tim Freedman
In 1996, Plunder died after falling over a cliff in the Blue Mountains near Sydney.
In late 1997, The Whitlams returned with Eternal Nightcap, an album dedicated to Plunder, which won them three ARIA Awards in 1998.

From an interview with Carmine Pascuzzi

"Tumbleweed has had the reputation of being a "drug-influenced" band. What are your thoughts on drugs now"?

I think it has its limitations. It’s up to you whether you want to be trapped in that lifestyle forever or just give it away. Everyone is different though and follows their own path. I find that it does me no good, so I stopped. Other people choose that lifestyle.

OK, they're from the Seventh State, but I'd still like to wave a flag for <B>Crowded House</B>. They play some great stuff, acoustic rock, a sound not unlike the Crash Test Dummies or even some of REM's stuff. They would've done a lot better in the States if only they hadn't led their first album with the jibe at American consumerism, Chocolate Cake.

KAZZAA suggestions: Distant Sun, Weather With You, It's Only Natural, and, of course, Chocolate Cake. If you go out and buy their greatest of album, Recurring Dream, you won't regret it.

The hardest working band in Australia

To say that this band goes off is an understatement.

Don't remind me. I was in Sydney 2 days too late.

siogo 07-11-2003 01:56 AM

For me its always been JIMMY BARNES I think he's one of the worlds most underated artists. I had the pleasure of seeing him three times, once with COLD CHISEL and twice solo in Perth and London.

cchris 08-19-2003 08:04 AM

COLD CHISEL were the ultimate to see live.
They had raw passion that few bands could match.

"Star Hotel"

All last night we were learning
Drank our cheques by the bar
Somewhere bridges were burning
As the walls came down at the Star
Squadcars fanned the insanity
Newsteams fought through the crowd
Spent last night under custody
And the sun found me on the road

At the Star Hotel
At the Star Hotel
They better listen cause we're ringin' a bell
Ain't no deals, we got nothing to sell
Just a taste of things to come at the Star Hotel

(Here lies a local culture
Most nights were good, some were bad
Between school and a shifting future
It was most of all we had)
Those in charge are getting crazier
Job queues grow through the land
An uncontrolled Youth in Asia
Gonna make those fools understand

that was such an incredible night.
best music.
best atmosphere.
what a show.

ok, for a little something different... try George.. or Elixir... or anything else Katie Noonan does.

For a bit of grind mixed with trendy riffs, try some Blood Duster. They've got some hilarious lyrics if you can understand what they're singing, and some really rocking tunes with crunching guitars.

They've got some mp3s on their site.

Updated and cleaned up most links.

Deserves a "BUMP" I reckon.

The Ghostwriters' first played dark acoustic pop, producing the hit Someone's Singing New York New York off their debut album, but the next two releases were heavily textured affairs.

The track below is off the latest. "Fibromoon".

THE GHOSTWRITERS

NEON GARDEN
Tempo - Relaxed
Tune bottom guitar string to 'C' for verse
The who, the what, the when, the where, the why
My life is spinning fast and so am I
I'd like to know some answers before I die

Oh why
In my neon garden
All the lights are shining
We could ride the lightning
The clouds collect in my mind
The who, the what, the when, the where, the why
I'm like a house that stands burnt out inside
I'm just a child with questions, who asked too many times

Oh why
In my neon garden
All the lights are shining
We could ride the lightning
The clouds collect in my mind
The who, the what, the when, the where, the how
I'm not the only sinner, who's killed a sacred cow

Oh why
Oh why
Oh why
In my neon garden
On the beach at Byron
You can hear the sirens
Clouds collect in my mind
In my neon garden

You guys are talking about Aussie artists and you haven't mentione INXS and Silverchair yet? 2 of the best bands of our generation homies.

Asta!!

TIO 09-14-2003 07:37 PM

Those are a bit too obvious, K!

K-Wise 09-14-2003 07:45 PM

Well neither are/were(RIP) too huge outside of Australia. INXS mighta been if they hadn't lost the poor guy. But Silverchair has basically been completely flat out forgotten about outside of Australia. They're in the same boat as all the other bands mentioned right now.

Asta!!

cchris 09-17-2003 07:04 AM

I remember the first time I saw INXS live just before they became anything.
An old school hall that held about 200 people.

Jumping Lyrics:

Say when you get down
Look to your left
Say when you get up
Look to your right
Figure out the puzzle
Make sure the pieces fit tight

Jumping jumping
All night long
Jump and jump and it’s up to you

There is no surefire way baby
It’s just the first star you see at night
Don’t walk around feeling hazy
If you need a taste take a bite

Some day they’ll catch you when you’re walking
Don’t you put up no fight
Draw back that look of confusion
Say you don’t believe in straight lines

What a great memory.

His website does him no justice but Alex Lloyd is brilliant.

Playing his latest offering Distant Light up full noise and on TFP.

It doesn't get any better.
